I think the illness is absolutely stupid and unnecessary. It didn't add anything to his character, all it did was give his loyalty mission a greater sense of urgency. He'd still be the same person without it.
Either way he's not going to die before ME3. That would be moronic and an enormous waste.

All of this takes place in a desert, of course. Shepard gets a fabulous tan and Thane helps her get sand out of weird places.
