I'm in the "must die" camp and my desire for him to be recruitable is highly conditional on ME3 taking place within 8-12 months of ME2. They set up the plot point. I want them to follow through, and it would be hard (not impossible, mind) for a cure to be anything other than a deux ex machina.

The plot point is that he's got an illness, not that he's dead.  "Following through" could entail any number of things (with dying being the most uncomplicated, simple, and uncreative route to go).  As Icca said, it's easy to make people feel some sort of extreme emotion through inventing character death, but it's a different thing entirely to concoct a plot with a less finalizing solution that still makes people feel something.  I'm not worried about a contrived cure for his illness at this point, because I feel that his situation (along with Jack's) was pretty contrived to begin with.

How do you make a dark and interesting character relatable?  Oh, right.

Give them space cancer.

Agreed, it's easy to write someone's death, to kill them off for a punch of emotional impact.  It's much harder to write someone's life, but it's so much more rewarding and overall ties you closer to that character as you grow closer to the character experiencing their ups and downs, laughing and crying with them and watching them evolve throughout the story.  And it would be far more 'emotionally engaging' to take part in finding a treatment / cure, think of the tears, possible frustration and then elation and relief (not to mention the impact it would have on the Drell race).  Like a race against time within the bigger race against time vs. the Reapers.  All the while bringing you closer to the character and further into his story and the bigger story.

And hanny, your last 2 comics were gold.  <3  I love little googlehanar!

As I was drinking my coffee this morning trying to come up with something to ask people... it hit me. I should ask them about whether their favorite character drank tea or coffee in the morning. So what does Thane drink in the morning... coffee or tea? How does he take it and why?

IccaRa always says the right things, it must feel like pissing in dark pants.  ;)

I'm right there with you guys, I love Thane because he is complex.  He's not easy to figure out, he's got layers, he's got history and frankly, that doesn't bother me one single bit.  I would be put off if he didn't have a previous relationship.  Having a wife and a son shows there's a real person underneath the assassin.  As much as some people would like Thane to be a block of ice, I find him more interesting, more compelling and more attractive that he's not.  I'm fascinated by his spirituality and I hope we see more / delve a bit further into it in ME3.  And I hope (pray) that we can see more of what's under 'dat zipper'!

That's the key note that made me interested his character so much, the fact that he isn't what most would describe as an "assassin" like persona. It's what makes him so different from other ME2 characters... the whole relationship thing he had doesn't bother me one bit, as you said, i would be put off as well if he hadn't had any type of relationship before ( considering his age ). The story about his history, his family, just made me like him more...it gave me an insight in his personality, suddenly seeing him as someone who is caring, emotional, sensitive..etc.
His spirituality is really fascinating and as you i would love, love..love to find out more about it, ahem.

Plus the zipper...what can i say: One zipper to rule them all *shaking fist at Bioware for not making it functional*

I think Thane is the kind of guy who'd drink either a hot chocolate or perhaps even a camomile tea as he's so suave and sophisticated.

Guys, before we got to know Thane, what were your thoughts on him when he was first introduced to us?

To be honest, I was shocked XDD

I didn't realize he would be so sophiscated and have a family. That attracted to me. I was like: He did? O.O Interesting.

Hot chocolate...hm... now that's an enticing thought. Because it's hot. Image IPB

First impressions or thoughts about him. In my case first thing that caught my attention, and  i admit ( shame on me ), was his suave, confident appearance. The first vid released in last year E3 really blew my mind away, and left me unsatisfied with lots of questions popping out in my tiny mind, since we didn't really hear more then a couple of his lines. But i was really intriqued to know more about his character.
Honestly i was suprised as well when more info about him was revealed. I accepted his story ( had a family, has a son ) and the illness part ( though hearing him say " I'm dying" in one of the vids revealed before the release of the game, really unleashed a ton of brick on my head ) in time when i learned more about his character.
Poor Thane, so much drama placed upon his shoulders.... but i love him anyway, because he's just so damn him and them puppy eyes...  the amount of awsomness ( and sexy ) he possesses is just disturbing, in a very good way of course. Everything about him is attractive on it's own way, really.

There's a bit of Samara that I expected to see with Thane, that calm and cold acceptance of the nature of her work. Thane seems to be teetering between that acceptance and his penance. And even on the acceptance side, he has an excuse that it's not him who does it. I have to admit, part of me wanted to see him be a much more relentless assassin, teetering on the dark side. I think that's my love of Atton Rand wanting to transfer over to a Bioware game.

The eidetic memory was a complete surprise. As were the biotics somewhat, but that was more when I saw them in the Blur trailers.

The attraction? The discipline, the philosophy, and the calmness.

Are you saying he's going to transfer over his consciousness to a quantum blue box and live forever?

Thane drinks black tea the morning. No sugar. Maybe a little milk, skim. He strikes me as a green tea fan as well. A drop of honey and a twist of lemon. In my world he's just that way.

Yeah, I love his calmness and surprisely gentle he is.

On my playthrough when Thane tells his last time that he saw his son and he remembers. I wonder if anyone could get the screenshot when he says: He hits me. Don't let them. Stop them. Why won't you...?"

He seems to mimick probably the expression Kolyat looked at him with. Awwww.

Hrm... the drink... - some sort of tea that helps him breathe easier; herbal, not medicinal. Although, maybe he's been introduced to hot chocolate and sneaks that from time to time as a guilty pleasure. The idea of milk making my throat all phlegmy, though... I dunno. It's for that reason that I think he's not drinking hot chocolate, no matter how awesome it is. Or maybe that's ALL he drinks, and thus explains his voice. AH HA. And I can't imagine it being coffee, unless it's decaffeinated, and even then... the smell...

First impression - I came into ME2 a month or two ago, straight from ME1, without looking up anything about it. I'd seen Thane on the mass effect wiki site when looking up planet maps for ME1 and, honestly, wasn't really looking forward to him when I gathered that he was an assassin and a romance option. After the lolmance that was Kaidan and Liara, I didn't even want to know how romances were going to be in the next game, except that I had a chance at my bro Garrus. I expected stereotyping, hardcore.

Due to this, on my first run-through, I sort of got around to Thane last. His recruitment mission and his introduction were so not what I expected. His character wasn't what I expected. I think almost everything anyone might really need to know about him is all in his recruitment: cold brutality, but careful to avoid collateral damage; professional, but repentant/spiritual; prideful but cooperative; introspective, but wanting to better the whole.

I got a sense that he was challenging Shepard when he starts in on the "The measure of an individual can be difficult to discern by actions alone. Take you, for instance..." setting himself and his methods in direct contrast to Shepard's. "I was curious to see how far you'd go to find me. Well. Here am I." *intense lizard stare*

Omnomnom so delicious.

And just when I thought he might be hinting at some racist tension, he offers to help save the human race for free.

Then, yeah. All it really took was one on-ship conversation for me to totally forget about Garrus >.>

eeeeeee~~~ ♥ Thane

The moment he said, "Well here I am." I was hooked. I loved how he challenged Shepard then softly said he was dying.

Thane is just...wow!

The first time I saw Thane, which was when he was leaked just after E3, I became hooked by the fact he was an assassin but still felt regret and sorrow over how he had taken a life. From that moment on I waited for more details but none came. Finally the game was released and then, after meeting Thane, I became even more fascinated and awe stricken by how calm and peacful he was. I hope Bioware keep Thane in ME3 and stick to those aspects that make Thane the great character he is. Long live Thane!

I was completely spoiler-free going in to ME2.  The only pre-game glimpse I got of Thane was from the cover.  From the moment he dropped from the vents, I was intrigued.  I can honestly say that no other character has won me over so quickly and on so many different levels.  I couldn't wait to get back to the Normandy and get to know him better...

...and when I did, Operation: Remain Loyal to Alenko failed spectacularly.

Awesome, a club for Thane! I was starting to think that Tali was the only character that people cared about here. :P

Like most of you, I really don't want Thane to get killed off. He's one of the most interesting characters in the entire series, and one of the few squad members I genuinely care about. If BioWare doesn't keep him in ME3, they'd be doing a great disservice to fans by abandoning such a complex and unique character.

Anyway, I knew I liked Thane when he first made his entrance. I think my jaw dropped when he just jumped down from the ceiling and killed all those guards.

Thane's recruitment mission is one of my favorite missions.  I always look forward to it in every playthrough, not just because of Thane (which is like the bonus at the end) but because the mission itself is just so cool.

I love the thought that Thane is always one step ahead of Shepard, he knows Shepard is there yet he uses it to his advantage and continues with his objective.  And that he drops down and takes out a room full of gun toting mercs with his bare hands and doesn't even break a sweat, so hot.  But the challenge between him and Shepard, just as Cindalkitty described, that he's confident enough to stand in front of Shep and Co. while their guns are pointed at him and speak calmly (politely even).  And then the *intense lizard stare*.

Yes, the schoolwork flashback is also one of my favourites. It is just before you go on Thane's loyalty mission to stop his son from also becoming an assassin. It is a very touching moment if you ask me. Don't worry, I don't think they'll remove a fan favourite through fear of losing customers. Got to go now, people, see you tomorrow and don't forget to "pray for the wicked".
