Hey, I looked at the Mass Effect wikia.

It said Thane makes a comment about feeling uncomfortable in the mess hall? Always having his back towards the wall.

If he says that, where does he say that?

So, with all this free time on my hands, a few days ago I went through and transcribed all Thane conversation options - the prompts, what Shepard really says, and how Thane responds.

As a female shep, in all of that, not once did he say jack to me about sitting with his back to the wall But I've read around that there are lines that've been cut that may still exist in the thane soundfiles.  I can't confirm that because, well, I haven't really looked into audio extracting XD

That occurs in the conversation where Thane explains Solipsism.  In the end, Thane says he appreciates these chats that they have.  Option 1 is "You're lonely" which will lead to a final set of responses: "Just a friend?" "It's never too late to change" and "Is that a 'poor me' I hear?"

"It's never too late to change" comes out as-
Shep:    This crew is pretty diverse.  You must have something in common with some of them.  Get out of this room and talk to them.
Thane:    I shall... consider it.  I won't keep you.

Note: none of the options in the solipsism conversation will impede the ability to romance him.

Anyway~~ Anti-climatic!  I want to know your cafeteria phobia, Thane!  Maybe he was picked on at hanar assassin school and always sat alone at lunch time?

One of my favorite quotes is one of the ones KaimanaMM listed, the not using imminent death as a reason to make oneself an island.

The way he says it, and leans forward against the table... I'm very surprised femShep wasn't written to take that as a come on.  Or an insult. "HAY HOW DID YOU KNOW I SPEND THE NIGHT ALONE?!  I NEVER SPEND THE NIGHT ALONE!  I AM SHEPARD THE GREAT!"  I mean, really, there's an obvious solution to that for both of them. *wagglybrows*  But he says it to maleShep, too. So... uh...

Speaking of Thane preferring to keep his back against the wall, it is because he believes it to be the most reliable way to protect himself from harm from the back. In fact, if Thane dies en-route to the Collector base during the suicide mission, you can see him leaning against the wall, but something truly unexpected happens.

I saw that vid... I think Thane's death is one of the worst! I mean, Jack being fried is awful too, but it looks as if she has a quick death. Thane's, on the other hand, makes me feel like he could still live for some minutes. If you've ever seen the "Signs" movie you'll understand what I mean.

That's so... beautiful! Does Thane actually say that? If so, when exactly?

Not counting the loyalty mission conversation, I believe it is in the third onboard conversation you can have with Thane, which starts out like this -

Shep:    The last time we talked, you started speaking about a past event as if you were watching it.
Thane:    Drell have perfect memories.  We can relive any moment in our lives with perfect clarity.  It's difficult to control at time.  Some of us disappear into... Mmm, let's call it solipsism.

The prompt after this has an Investigate option to the left, and "So you remember every 'hit?'" to the right.  Taking the Investigate option gives you two subjects to question him about: [Solipsism] and [Memories].

The taste of another's tongue in your mouth is his reponse to Shepard when she asks "What do you mean 'Sol-ip-sism?'"

I like his description way better than wiki's.

Its right after he says, "I look forward to the memories." I love that moment. The hope in his eyes, the soft smile on his lips. Ahhh!! I <3 Thane.

Yessss I knew it

Yeah, I notice how happy he is when you romance him. He seems giddy and so content. Eeeeeeee I'm glad my FemShep did get together with him.

I don't remember exactly if I've heard him say that, I want to say I have, but I could be 100% wrong, so take what I say with a grain of salt.  In my Garrus-romance playthrough I told Thane to get out and mingle a bit with the rest of the crew and I think that line was his response.

So, about those soundfiles... 

I found it.  It would have been right where you said, I think.  It just never came up for me regardless of what options I picked. dooOOOOooom

"I found it difficult to sit in the ship's mess for meals.  I'm used to keeping my back against a wall, facing the doors."

edit: I also have a file of femshep in that conversation saying, "The rest of us lose as much as you do when you hold yourself apart."  That's new to me.

as well as another new-to-me Thane line:  "I'm trying to relax.  Find my center."

or did you mean where on your computer are the sound files?  Unfortunately, they're in some kinda bundled file format, so you need a program to extract the files from the bundles.  The link above has the links to the things you'll need.

My initial run as a Male Shepard I really dug Thane's existentialist approach to life as a reformed assassin.



I just finished a run through as an Infiltrator FemShep and he was still cool though a bit too weepy. That said I really hope they don't cure his Kepral's and maybe bring his son into the new story somehow. I would prefer to hear how he died saving Shep (if you had a romance subplot.) or getting to spend the rest of his life in peace with his son. It would be wishy-washy if BW let him live just because the fan base roared loud enough. It would cheapen his character and plotline.
