Thane being old is mostly a joke (I must be pretty old too if Thane is considered old).
I keep looking for a clip / picture from Happy Gilmore, the part where Adam Sandler keeps saying, 'You can't take her stuff, she's ... old! Can't you see ... she's ... OLD!'.
Sadly, my googlefu has failed me.

I don't know that I can follow Aello's and Hain's excellent posts. Both said what I've been saying for a long long time, but they word it better than I could hope to, for sure.
What I love about both your guys' posts is that you bring up Thane's perceived 'weaknesses'. Thane is weak because :
1. He's afraid.
2. He was in love once.
3. He's a father.
4. He's old. (That is mostly a joke, but I've seen plenty of people cite that as a reason to dislike Thane.)
So, my question is in the same vein as Aello's and Hain's. How do any of those make a person weak?
1. I've seen so many people dismiss Thane because he's 'emo'. And everytime I see that, I want to respond with, "That word does not mean what you think it means. Try again." And unlike other male LIs that get slapped with the 'whiny' label by insecure fanboys, a lot of this comes from females. *facepalm*
2. Sometimes I wonder if this is an age thing. I've said it before, but I'm in my 30s and would be reluctant to get involved with anyone who's never been in a serious relationship before. I'm honestly curious if it's mostly younger players who view this as a negative.
3. TBH, my initial reaction to Kolyat was, "o hai, Dustil." But if one takes a deeper look, the so-called 'Carth Syndrome' is only there on a superficial level. I love Carth, but there are so many differences between the two romances and characters that I'm not going to bother listing them.
4. I resemble that comment!

What if Thane meets Feron in Lair of the Shadowbroker?

And yeah, he's old. But he's pretty hot for an old guy. I'd jump his geriatric bones, I mean, hello - have you seen those thighs?
Dellallelujah, because thou speaks the truth.
His thighs are like Han Solo of Mass effect. You either love them, or you stalk them...no other way. And yes i know, this sentance doesn't make any sense ( blames Kaimana for mentioning thighs, glorious thighs )
P.S: Feron and Thane.... just as i thought that this can't get any worse ( read; awesome )

1. He's afraid.
I bow to him, he's taking his death a lot easier then i take my sumemr exams. I wish i had that much courage as he does. But he has something to be afraid of, me...not so much.
2. He was in love once.
And you were never in love before? You never loved someone with all your heart? You did, oh goody. Well next time you meet someone new and start caring about them, tell them that you already loved. And loved greatly.
If they share the same view on "oh no i'm not his first love" as you do, and start backing off.......you might reconsider your "idealistic" views.
3. He's a father.
What's not to love about that.? One simple word like this can talk volumes. Forget " Kolyat i am your FATHER" Look beyond superficial meaning of the word, to it's depth in what the word represents in Thane's case. Through the word father we learn that he cared, that he enjoyed the time given to him with Kolyat, that he's sensitive and protective of the people he loves ( he knew he should defend Irikah and Kolyat more ). The point is that they used the word father to shine the light into his character. To show us that despite his mistakes, he never stopped being caring and protective. It's like a puzzle...his stories do not talk only of his past life, but what person he was and still remains under that thin leather layers and green scales.
4. He's old. (That is mostly a joke, but I've seen plenty of people cite that as a reason to dislike Thane.)
If he's old, then Udina is an angel. This kind of reason to dislike him is...completely irrational. Twenty years from now ( if those who use this reason are mostly between 15 - 21years old ) even they'll be old. But i really mean OOOLLLLDD, since i doubt they'll be able to crawl through vents and not get stuck, not to mention snapping someone's neck. Maybe theirs...yup, more chances for that.
So, my question is in the same vein as Aello's and Hain's. How do any of those make a person weak?
Not him. He can carry all of his luggage placed on his back. Some of people obviously can't.

BioWare, don't do what too many films and games do, and punk Thane out in the sequel.
