Point of discussion:
I have seen many times, in many places, that in comparison of characters (i.e. Jacob/Thane or Thane/Garrus or Garrus/Jacob) the aspect of "baggage" is brought up. I am surprised when it is noted that Jacob dislikes other's "baggage" as he has dealt with his own.
When I look at Jacob as a character what I see is a person who is emotionally constricted. Meaning suppression of an emotional response. Now I am not saying Jacob is bad for this, that is not the case when you look at soldiers or people in the military. In fact it is a beneficial aspect, its reinforced during basic training. Do the job, put the emotions aside until later. The abhorrence of killing is overcome through conditioning and is made into a voluntary action. Emotional constriction serves a purpose.
Its when is outside of that when emotional constriction can become unhealthy. Emotional constriction in everyday life and as a coping mechanism can cause issues in personal relationships. Especially in intimate relationships as emotions connect individuals to others.
I saw this repeatedly with Jacob as my Shep was around him. He appears to have issues with trust and displays anger routinely. Its when you see the sadness or happiness, he mutes them. This could lead to problems in the relationship down the road. I am not writing that he has to be emo but healthy expression of emotions is what leads to healthy relationships.
When you contrast with Garrus or Thane, they display emotions at times when it would be appropriate. I am not saying this is a mark against Jacob, I am saying, that in the creation of Mass Effect, someone got that aspect of the military culture very right. I don't know if it was intentional or accidental but its there.
In my OPINION, a female Shepard, who is emotionally constricted herself, is in a relationship with Jacob, I think would have problems down the line. The intimacy would suffer. But that's my opinion.
In the end, all three are interesting characters. I happen to love Thane.
And with that....
