I would suggest that having to make a decision to alter something that makes Thane what he is would be an adequate cost for being able to cure his disease, but something tells me that suggestion isn't going to go over well in this thread.
It would depend on what you're suggesting the cost to be, I suppose. But due to the nature of this thread, the idea of sacrificing something that is decidedly Thane would make a few people wary.
But yes, I also understand that this could be seen as a bit hypocritical, also due to the nature of this thread. We're asking for an optional cure; something that arguably makes up a significant part of his character. I believe the difference is that a hypothetical cure was hinted at in ME2. So while it is a part of him, it can be seen as a relatively minor part. On top of that, Thane is rather flippant and accepting of it. He does not make a big deal out of the fact that his days are numbered. If he does not let it make up a large part of him, than I don't see why we should either. Again, this statement can also be seen as hypocritical. But the logic, I think, is this: Thane does not see this as a major part as to why he is the way he is. We, as the players, understand this and appreciate it. But the difference comes down to this: Thane does not mind dying. We, the players, are understandably not fond of the idea.
As the old saying goes, dying is easy, living is hard.
I understand your concerns, Twitch, and I share them. (: I would be extremely disappointed if the cure was something easy to achieve, and without any contemplation.
