Is it ever explicitly stated how long he has to live? not just show symptoms, but before he can no longer operate normally? If ME3 happens right after ME2, then his health may not even be a problem.

There's foreshadowing that may lead to having convert Thane from his old religion to the Enkindlers. Totally reading into a particular chainmail letter. We'll see.
I can't work with you people, you claim you're alright with consequences arising from the pursuit of this cure, but you don't want Thane turned into a mindless homicidal husk. I just can't work under these conditions.

Requote for new page:
It's important to remember that Thane admits he does not want to die at the culmination of his romance subplot because he now has something to live for. It's a painful moment of clarity. I think that is why some people feel so strongly about a hypothetical cure -- they see that flicker of resistance in Thane and it resonates with them.

That about sums it up then. Introduce a cure, but make it so it turns Thane into a mindless homicidal husk. That's a good compromise, right?
Not percisely, no, mostly because 'Thane' would no longer be Thane. I am no more sure of this possible compromise than you are, but turning Thane into a mindless husk seems... onesided.

^ Thank you so much IccaRa. I may over look many things, but for me not to raise this up in an argument against those that Thane to die due to illness just totally breaks my heart.
I'm so appreciative for you to remind us that Thane wants to live.

I don't mind Thane. I think he has an interesting position. The regretful assassin is not original, but hardly overused.

The syndrome is similiar to cancer. He can have his lungs replaced (not for sure if he has or hasn't yet) and be bought some time. Eventually the illness will spread to the rest of his organs. I believe it takes some time for this.
Still, why not support an optional cure and save him the intense pain?

No one appreciates irony unless it's accompanied by an emoticon anymore.
There we go. I added a wizard. I never though that making Thane a husk was a good idea, I was just, never mind.

I still stand by that Thane was designed to be a tragic character and he should stay that way. I really like him but curing him would take away part of what makes him who he has become. Just like Tali, I've absolutly loved and adored her since ME but I never want to see what she looks like, it would take away some of the mysteriousness of the character.
Lol.. this is so hurting me.. the constant.. repeating... ugh.. can't.. breathe.. I.. can't.. go... on.. anymore!! THANE!! I LOVE YOU!!

But taking away Thane's disease has nothing to do with how "mysterious" he is. The only thing it would take away is his expiration date. I doubt he would have been any less interesting if he wasn't dying. His character is a great deal more than just a codex entry for Kepral's Syndrome. Plus, his being cured has the potential to be a stunning story arc.
*hugs Calla*
I just don't understand why the few people that post these remarks can't get past that.. Thane IS NOT his illness. He would still do absolutely everything he has done in the game eventually even if he wasn't ill.
If anything is a serious driving force for Thane it's his son Kolyat and FemShep (if romanced). His illness does nothing to contribute to his wife's murder, his skills as an assassin, or want to do good in the Galaxy.

I just don't think "I have some things I need to atone for, but no rush, I've got plenty of time, you just do your thing and we'll come back to that later" has as much power as Thane's desire to bring soem good into the galaxy before he passes away. Hell, much of his spirituality likely has its place in his attempts to come to terms with his mortality. It also adds value to your romance, as you both no there is no time for apathy or lethargy, you have to make every day count.

Not at all. He states that his spirituality is a tradition to his people.

Never said he is mysterious, said he is a tragic character. Curing his disease is taking away that element of his character and changing him. His disease can make for a much more stunning story element in my opinion. As I said earlier, have him at some point give his life to save Shepard.
He's dying but decides to go out on his own terms rather than suffering a slow death. Heck make it part of the whole romance, in his final loving act he takes a shot meant for Shepard, giving his life to save hers as well as sparing her having to watch him suffer as the disease gets worse.
