I like Thane. He's a cool character. I appreciate his accuracy with sniper rifle. Found him extremely useful, especially after equipping him with a maxed Widow.

Very cute Hanar, but I probably don't deserve it!  I'll have to put you on my da watch list.

I was reliving some old embarrasing moments on the boards here, ones before I romanced anyone at all in the game and I found this:

Bit late to this thread so if this has already been said then just ignore - perhaps killing Thane off and recruiting his son in ME3 is the outcome, giving all you gals some hot (younger) drell action?

Image IPB
Can someone please string me up for that comment - what a dick, a huge insensitive dick.  I apologise for my dick head ness and ask all here to forgive me.

Today, I am about love and only love.

Kolyat probably doesn't know how to do it right, and Thane's soul won't let him.

Maybe if someone asked him to...

I like to say that's only a lack of thinking on the author behalf. I can't explain how many times I do major facepalms after reading certian comments around the Mass effect related threads. I kind of get a hissy fit reading how people like to assume that all LIs' will be a part of ME3, while they automatically cut Thane out, due to his illness. Sadly the letter and medical report in LotSB only gave them more "ego" to additionaly support their belief...But that's just what they think. I personally don't have any feelings in connection to the letter and medical report. It could either mean that we got an indication of what is to come or devs just really like crushing and smashing our little hearts while laughing as manicas reading our posts of utter concern.

What makes my head shake in dismay is the ignorance some of the forumites possess. While they happily write/ talk..whatever, about LIs' returning ( Thane not being included ), they apparently never take the time, like a minute or hour, to realize that hey Thane is also one of the romance interests.
It's sad to see how much people tend to think that illness is what defines him. I won't reapet that again becasue it's been said gazillion times.
Just becasue Tali, Jacob, Kaidan and the rest of the LIs' super unit don't have any heatlh problems, does that truly mean that they deserve and will have happy endings, while Thane should not. All becasue of his medical state?
Really? I tend to believe that people who write him off just like that don't consider some of the above mentioned things. I wouldn't mind reading posts where they would at least consider a choice where we can decide to either cure him or let him pass away. After all wasn't Mass effect all about choices?
But nothing makes me headdesk more then a post of a forumite where Thane is simply to be dead...or replaced by Kolyat.

EDIT: Yes, I'm aware that guys get less conversation and insight in his life and as such I do not blame them for thinking and believing that Thane will or should die. But the big differance is to generalize that on all playthroughs of all people ( men and women alike) or generalizing that "idea" on only their own playthrough. The former seems to prevail.  And now I want to kick a chair or something.

I'm sorry if i made any grammar mistakes, I am in desperate need of hot chocolate.
By the way, you guys make me laugh Image IPB The songs, the conversations...this really is an AWESOME thread. EVER.

You see I have never believed that he'll die before ME3. I'm sat here praying that Bioware don't kill him in the gap. But I don't think they will and I'll tell you for why. Bioware have created a very deep and enjoyable character, therefore, why go through such trouble of creating him to just kill him? It makes no sense. Sure, they could do it for an emotional heart breaker but I don't think they would bother doing that, too many people would likely go absolutly mad. I know I would, I haven't spent all my Shepard's time becoming best mates with Thane just to have him die without finishing the fight. Oh no. (Stumbles about) Wo! Very mad ranting moment there. Really need to stop doing that... nah.

I hope, hell more then hope, that he will not die. Not between the two games nor in the game itself. Now, I would agree that giving the player an option is the best solution. Those who for roleplaying reasons ( or some other ones, to me completley not understabdavle ones ) believe he should be at peace and die, they should have a choice to do so. On the other hand those who wish to help him, cure Thane of his disease ( and by doing so help the rest of the drell population as well ) should also have a choice. In the end it's all in the CHOICE. And in my former post I was reffering to exactly that. That people who generalize his death to the game as a default need to be consider the choice factor, not go on trolling about "blah blah blah he will die ".

I will feel cheated the most if  the rest of LIs' ride on ponies into the sunset, sprinking rainbows all around while Thane will get a sad, heartbreaking ending. But I'll say that  I trust in Bioware. I truly hope you're right.  I'm being optimistic about his fate. I tend to believe that we'll be able to cure him or at least  help in a way that will elongate his life.

And yes there will be pitchfork and torches and toilet paper all around if all mentioned above *poofs* into a small fluffy cloud.

I never really understood why people just assume he is going to die before or during ME3. I just never felt that way. What makes even less sense to me is that some people actually think he should be replaced by his son. You did said you made that statment before you romanced anyone, so you hadn't talk to Thane and you knew nothing about him. I guess I can understand why you would think that.

The important thing is that you don't feel this way anymore. Image IPB

I have to say yes, I was thoughtless when I wrote that, but partly because I was new to the game and hadn't had time to fully embrace all the characters and their nuances. I don't like to judge fellow forumites for anything they write, especially if they are newbies, only trolls or people obviously responding to posts to cause trouble attract my disdain. But I feel seasoned now, and somewhat more reflective.

And yes, Jecwsu I certainly don't feel that way anymore! Image IPB

I think Bioware put a lot of thought into Thanes character, and he is a great character with a fantastic background story. With it came some pretty heavy emotional stuff, his son, his illness, but those things are not what defines him you're definitely right about that.  There is a lot of investment in his character which almost makes me think Bioware aren't going to have him die before the end of ME3.

Hope you didn't take my post as offensive of sorts.  No negative stuff was meant with it. I only replied to your question "Why some think he should be replaced by his son". I was simply referring to those forumites that even if aware, ignore certain facts in connection with Thane .. with adding insults to the character. You are not one of those at all.
So I apologize if I my post made you feel as if I'm directing any "rage" at you.

No I didn't take your post that way at all Aello.

I think Thane is someone who you have to sit back and take in, and not all "get" him or his place/how he fits in, it took me a while, but now I think he's goddamn awesome.

I'm glad to hear that. Guess with all the pools and topics around the forums I'm just getting concerned.
Seeing how disappointed fans of Liara and Kaidan/Ash were in ME2, makes me ponder. It wasn't the nicest move from devs side, but the bright thing is that they'll be around in ME3. Seeing how Bioware likes to say that ME3 can also be a standalone game as well, it has me worried that some fanbases may suffer. Honestly I wish none will have to go through rage and rantings like Kaidan/ Ash fans just to eventually accept that fact of their favourtie character being reduced to a simple few minute cameo. And get a hissy fit of epic proportions as a result.

Yeah I completely understand you. There is a whole cargo of stuff to process when it comes to Thane and I can understand not every player is happy about that. There are turnoffs for some but if you do take a time to, like you did, sit back and take it in, you can start to see the big picture. That that stuff on his shoulders is not as bad as you would think. His charming personality and thank god, gentelman manner, make up for that. I was being quite disappointed at first when we got the info about him, having been married and having a son...but now I'm far from bothered. I saw the error of my ways, I could say.
So yeah, for a shot time I was a heretic..Image IPB But only a tiny little short time.

Thane says he has 8-12 months left. If we knew the length of the time period separating ME2 and 3, we could make a logical conclusion as to what happens to him.

Myself, I think ME3 will either start with Thane's condition starting to get serious, or with him magically cured somehow. I refuse to believe that the game will start with him dead (i.e. he dies in the gap), but it would make absolutely no sense.

I said this in the Garrus thread earlier and I'm just gonna drop some of the points I made there here.
I'm getting a little fed up with some of the hate stuff I've seen around in some of the threads, and some groups too, the my LI is better than your LI bs that seems to go on between some fans.  Actually its more the character hate in general that goes on that makes me a bit sad.  Fair enough to dislike a character for whatever reason and people have valid reasons for their dislike, but then to insult those who do like those characters is rabid fandom in its worst possible incarnation.

I think some of this has recently reared its ugly head because of the LotSB dossiers, and that's a shame, because really if anything, those dossiers made me love some of the characters I felt indifferent about, and the ones I already loved I now love even more.

If anything gives me respite from the hate and the haters is that I think Bioware did an amazing job, and have treated a lot of our favourite characters with great care.  I feel confident that Bioware will do justice to the characters I have come to love so much.

I have a Shep for Thane and one for Garrus, both romances have their merits, each of my Sheps is different and fit the mold of those characters (My Thane Shep is a soldier, reserved, never had a LI in ME1 and is introverted, introspective in my eyes a great companion for Thane.)

I feel that ME3 will have some amazing possible storylines for Thane, and that makes for one happy bug.
