EDIT:  Good point.  Would Thane believe Shepard's Reaper theory?

I'm pretty sure he does!
One of his quotes goes along something like "you've defeated a Reaper".

Yes, in the game, he does.  And in the game, the mission is to stop the Collectors who are a threat to humanity.

But I thought we're still in the realm of what if Irikah had lived, would Thane join Shepard's mission?

IF we're still in bizzaro world and Thane still went home at night to Irikah and Kolyat, would he join a mission to stop the Collectors who are abducting human colonists.  I think no.

BUT, IF he buys Shepard's story about the Reapers, which would require him to toss a little faith Shepard's way - I mean, Shep's the Hero of the Citadel and all, but the Council did say the attack was the geth not the Reapers and they downplay the entire thing every time you turn around - IF he believed her that the Reapers are a threat to all life in the galaxy, I can see him joining the mission.  Eliminating the Collectors would be dealing a blow to the Reapers (we hope, at least).

We can get into would he join the mission not knowing for sure that the Reapers would even acknowledge the loss of the Collectors or would it hurt them in the end.  But it's all what ifs in an alternate universe.

Or am I confused?  (It wouldn't be the first time.)

Actually, it's during his loyalty mission.

aaaah, yes.  "Shepard, he's just a common criminal.  You've killed a Reaper."

Going through those files always make me giggle.

I wonder how many backslashes it'll add to my slantyface now.

You all make excellent points. If Thane didn't believe in the Reapers, I'm sure he wouldn't risk a suicide mission if he was still with his family - even if he was dying anyway. He didn't have a lot of options otherwise when you did recruit him - but I imagine Shepard would use the Reaper card if he was unwilling.

I forget where, but it says that Thane keeps up studies on species he is likely to encounter, and because of the drell relationship to hanar, the drell are exceedingly good at judging body language. Surely he could tell if Shepard was trying to lead him up the garden path - and surely he could tell when she was telling the truth, even more telling would be that a turian (Garrus), humanity's tradional enemies, was backing her up. Considering Shepard's feats of skill, especially if he/she is a Paragon, I think Thane would definitely be tempted into joining.

I'm still sorting out the voice files for myself. Love Jacob's line in Thane's recruitment mission, though: 'Got up on the side of don't give a damn today?' There's inevitably so much one misses even through many playthroughs. I recently found Mordin's reaction to taunting the merc on Grunt's recruitment mission: 'Adding insult to injury. Literally." I bet the writers had a lot of fun.

"Arashu protected me on my last misson with Shepard. Now, however, I'm not so sure. The Reapers are coming, there's no denying that. Shepard's going to need an army. Well, Shepard has my gun. Thankfully... I never miss." That would be awesome. I', looking forward to an ME3 trailer. I'm hoping Garrus and Thane will be in it, possibly even Legion. I don't think they'd have Legion though as they used him for ME2 but they haven't used Thane yet. Thane in ME3 and ME3 trailer!

LOL I want to say something about jealousy and Thane when I see pics of him with other Shepardsbut nothing is coming to mind. It is a funny thought though.

LOL That pic is Epic WIN!

You know what I find adorable about Thane's romance is the fact that it doesn't start by physical attraction. Shepard shows concern for him then wakes him up from his battle sleep.

Then he starts...

So YAY! *partyhat*

That's for me why Thane's romance wins head and shoulders over any other ME romance. Thane isn't encroaching or leaning or hero-worshiping, but a perfectly self-contained, self-reliant person who sees merit in spending some time with you and honestly tries to get to know you. He has no reason to be shallowly attracted to your appearance because he's an entirely different species, so all he can be interested in at first is your personality. And he's not a pushover - what I disliked about Kaidan's romance is that he was happy for it to be all Shep's decision - he even gives you plenty of outs. Thane is willing to hear whatever Shep has to say, but he's confident in his own decisions, makes his own decision to approach you romantically, and goes into the thing rather wholeheartedly. I don't know what Bioware was thinking, tainting the most mature and potentially solid romance with health issues. Image IPB

Indeed, I get the feeling (though I haven't actually romanced Thane yet, I'll get around to it!) that Thane has a very mature perspective on romance, and that compliments his character. It's not really based on physical appearances, but emotions.

This is one of the biggest reasons I love Thane's romance.  His confidence.  Confidence is sexy.  He never backs down, he doesn't look for an out, he only says that he's not quite sure what to do since he's never had feelings for someone of another species.

And alot of people forget or just don't know that Jacob isn't the only one to ask Shep how she's doing - Thane does also.  It's lame that Shep can only get into a dialogue with Jacob over it, but Thane does ask.

Some people seem to think Liara is the only one to ask because of the DLC.

Thane is filled to the briming with confidence and never gives up. One of his best parts. I think this is because he seldom makes mistakes, even if that means getting a distraction, he rarely makes a mistake so has gained confidence from that fact.

I agree with everything you said except for this point. Drell and asari are very similar to humans in appearance because they were designed, it seems, to appeal to female and male gamers respectively. The first thing that attracted me to Thane's character (though certainly not all) was his appearance. So I don't see why femshep couldn't be interested in him for that reason, at least in part, and vice versa.

I think the interest in personality over physical attraction stems from Thane saying "I've never felt affection for another species before."

But when he said that, the first thing that popped into my head was "affection does not necessarily equal attraction."

And attraction doesn't necessarily mean acting on anything, especially if you're not the type to let your body do what it wants all willy-nilly... so he could still not have any clue what to do with a boobie, but this doesn't mean he hasn't found himself attracted to boobies.

I use grown up words.

Yeah, he asks. But I wanted more of a conversation at that point!! :crying:

At the beginning I didn't think that much about Thane looks ( oh, another alien, Bioware designers sure are imaginative). And yeah, I remember reading about how he was designed to appeal female gamers.

But what totally drawn me to him was his personality. I think that Nonsense4 made a good job describing him, so I won't repeat the same with my poor english.

Actually I think I didn't stop to look Thane carefully until I came across this:

My attraction to Thane began when I first saw him.  I was reading on the couch as my husband played and heard Shepard say, "I got better." I looked up and watched what I thought was just another cut scene. I saw Thane's shoulder then he dropped from the vent and took out the three mercenaries before shooting Nassana. That was it. I liked him.

It wasn't until he prayed and then spoke, after that I was a goner. Wow was all I thought. It took me a couple of weeks to digest this. I kept telling my husband to call me when he did anything with Thane. And I kept bugging him to finish the game.

For me, it was attraction to his spirituality that first intrigued me. Then I noticed the physical aspects and well, here I am. I love the character.

As a woman, its always been about the whole package for me. I've known a few men who were very attractive but there was nothing there that drew my attention. For me, a guy had to meet criteria that had nothing to do with physique. The top three Thane met were...

1. He read.
2. He was kind, gentle and understand/open to spirituality.
3. He didn't supress his emotions. He accepted them and was willing to have them.

Don't get me wrong, Thane has nice eyes, lips, hips, thighs and shoulders but its what the character is at the core that matters. At least to me.

Image IPB

My original Shepard (from ME) didn't romance anyone. She turned down Liara and Kaidan flat. Neither were particularly interesting to me. That changed. I want Thane to have more time and I want to see where my Shepard's relationship can go.

Am I a bad person for not initially finding him attractive?

The way the character model is textured around the frill... from behind, at first, it gave me the impression of old man hair. Like Larry David from Curb Your Enthusiasm.

And I thought they dressed him funny. >.>

However, I no longer feel this way.
