Well said, Cindal. When you meet Thane he's just so resigned and alone. He tells Shepard she's the first friend he's made in 10 years and he grows to love her. I don't think it's a betrayal that he finds love elsewhere. Is the only way for him to be loyal to Irikah's memory to remain in isolation constantly reliving old sorrows and regrets until death claims him? That's just depressing. I like that with Shepard Thane is given the chance to be happy and experience love again. Who he loves more isn't really a factor because Irikah is gone. Death is more of an abstract and Thane and Shepard are living in the now. And anyway, he tells Shepard he'll be waiting for her not that he and Irikah will be waiting (lol).

More than anything, I want Shepard to be able to ask about this.

I totally understand that.  I had so many questions after I finished the game. Sooo many.  That's how I found myself here :D

I still have a ton of questions, but I enjoy so much having a place to discuss these things at long last.  And I guess that's the best I can hope for til ME3, or, hopefully, more bits and pieces in some DLC between now and then.

After seeing the potential for ME3 in Shadow Broker DLC, I'm willing to wait--if it produces a quality game, I will so wait.

I would kill to know what the writers intend to do with Thane. The fact that he's the only love interest that has romance-driven content in their dossier files in LOTSB makes all this even more questionable.

He's also the only FemShep romance that gets unique dialogue if he dies during the suicide mission, if I recall correctly. Jack is the other one. Jacob gets plenty of extra content, as does Miranda. I'd say Garrus and Tali's romances are the ones with the least amount of content. We also get the hint treatment is possible. Assumably it wouldn't outright cure him, but at least give him enough time for the hanar to develop a cure.

I said this in the Cure Thane group: "Yeah, my assumption is Shepard will have the option to ask him to do the lung transplant, even though he'd rather stay and help. If he does, he'll be out for the remainder of the mission recuperating or there were some complications that extend his medical stays. If Shepard takes the neutral/Renegade route, Thane will die at the end of the mission.

Possibly there'll even be some ethical stuff about exactly where these lungs came from. Making the choice to save him a Renegade one, and the Paragon choice to sacrifice him."

Possibly if he's out for the mission you'll be allowed to visit him in the hospital regularly, e-mail, or commlink with him.

I don't know, Saibh, but I'm pretty sure the extra bit Thane says if he dies during the suicide mission was cut from the main game.

That's possible. It was a friend who played the video for me--I've never killed Thane off. I can't bring myself for anything other than No One Left Behind. I just can't.

There's just no point killing off anyone. For one, it's screwing yourself out of potential content. For another, it's completely unnecessary, since the plot does not demand it. Worse yet is selling Legion to Cerberus.

Dialogue choices in the next game. I mean, I was severely disappointed to find out I couldn't really react to a LI dying during the SM, but Shepard being an inorganic emotionless tool is nothing new. But if there's any reason to do it, it's to see if you get different content in ME3. Probably not enough to warrant multiple playthroughs with character deaths, though.

This may sound stupid, but I don't think we're supposed to kill anyone during the suicide mission.

Also, as of LOTSB, Shepard finally shows emotions.

EDIT:
I love your Warden, by the way.

Saibh:

I've been thinking of your questions and your thoughts about Thane's telling Shepard he would be awaiting her across the sea and the inherent contradiction playing out being that Thane was married to Irikah.

I find your assertions interesting and a little baffling. It appears you see the afterlife as a continuation of you, as you are now. That dying will be subtractive of you as a whole. Your words, "lobotomized."

Having been raised in a culture that teaches spirituality versus religion, I come from a different perspective.

I will tell you the story I was told when I first dealt with death as a young child.

A small bug was born into the water. The bug was happy in the water, swimming, diving and playing with its family and friends. Every now and then it would find its self near the surface and it would look beyond and wonder at what lay above the water. It would try to break free but it was bound. Sooner or later it would return to its life in the water. Until one day, when the bug again tried to break out of the water, suddenly, it did. It flew out of the water into the air and the great beyond. It experienced new things and saw things from a different place and perspective, one that was more expansive and more encompassing. It was wonderful and the bug wanted to share the experience with those in the water. So it tried to go back but it couldn't. The bug had changed and became more than what it was. Worse yet, the friends and family in the water couldn't see or hear the bug. So the bug returned to the air to experience life anew, but it didn't forget its friends and family. Every now and then, the bug would see someone they knew fly out of the water and would go and greet them and then take them into the great beyond. The bug did this time and time again until all they knew was with them. But this didn't end with the bug, instead the others did the same with those they knew. It was the way life moved on.

The moral of the story is:
Life as we know it here, is limited, the life beyond isn't. We won't know what that life beyond is like until we journey there.

We are but a small sparkle that returns to the blaze of the sun. When we return, no longer are we alone and tiny but we are together in the great expanse of the infinite. Call it what you may, God, Your Higher Power, the Universe, heaven. My people call it the great mystery.

Everything we are and will ever be is there. All those we loved and lost are there. When we return, we are part of them as they are part of us. Because in my culture, when you love someone, be it family or friends, they become part of you. And that part of you returns to you within them. So when you go to the great beyond, all your parts return but they return connected to those you gave your love too.

This is how I see life after death. This is how I would see Thane reuniting with Irikah and then with Shepard. There would be no jealousy or possession. How can you be jealous of something that is a part of you already? How can you reject that which is you? It's like saying I like this hair but not this one. It makes no sense. It is all you and them at the same time. And it will be beautiful.

I'm so sorry, but I'm too sick to be eloquent today. You wrote very beautiful post, but I'm going to be very dull.

You're right--I do see any part of myself being removed as I am now being dissatisfying. I wouldn't be me anymore. You know how people complain at the end of Back to the Future, even though the kid has his parents back, they're complete strangers to him. They're not the people he once knew and loved, because they're different now. They have a whole history he's never been a part of. It's sort of like that.

Blech. When I'm healthy I promise I'll be long-winded and purple prosey. But for now, this would at least present an interesting species dichotomy. ^_^

Mm...I think that it's not about what we're supposed to do; the fact that we're told, over and over, that someone will die, and the fact that there are quite a few hidden variables determining survival tells me that in the default ME3 save, at least some fo your squad will be dead. I think saving everyone is an achievement earned through careful planning and hard work. It's the best ending, not the desired one, which would simply be to get out of there alive.

And thank you. :D I'm glad my efforts paid off.

Welcome BalboaBaby! Image IPB I'm fairly new around here too, you'll find that everyone's super nice (and loving Thane, of course!)

I'm loving the spiritual debating around here, some very interesting points and thought out responses from both sides! This is what I love about a good forum--opinions from all sorts of different people, from all walks of life and all places on earth, where we can discuss and learn about each other Image IPB

*Ahem* Not enough Thane in my post. Hmm...I will say I'm starting to become optimistic about Thane's chances in ME3. I recently went over the making of Thane, and saw just how many drafts they went through with his apperance alone. Thane's a poster boy of ME2, the sexy malien option for women...why would they kill him off in ME3 after putting so much hard work into him? Besides, the drell are a new species, and the only representatives we have of them are Thane, Kolyat, and Feron. If you didn't read the comics/get LotSB, you don't know who Feron is, and as much as I love the kid I don't see Kolyat playing a major role. That leaves only Thane, and as there's so much left to be discovered with the drell and the Compat with the Hanar, not to mention the population problems...there's too much untapped potential there to kill him off. And since I don't see ME3 taking place within only a couple of months...well, that leaves only one option, cure-seekers!

(and no, I refuse to entertain the notion that he'll die halfway through the game. Not going to happen. Ever.)

Well, I'm puzzled.
To explain, I just had my first dream that starred Thane. It was in an ordinary house, and while Thane, unfortunately, did not go shirtless, for some reason, I did. (Something about the proper application of sunblock). Thane spent most of the time watching television. I feel... squashed. And, like I said, puzzled.Image IPB

This is exactly how I look it myself. I've thought about it, but I can't think of a reason justifying killing him off. It makes no sense; that's all. As for dying halfway through ME3, as much as I hate to say it myself, part of me thinks it's possible.

And hi, BalboaBaby! Hope you have a great time here! :)

I'm doing Thane's loyalty mission now. I want to see every dialogue option avaliable first hand so I'm being very meticulous with my saves. Bad cop Thane is sexy hehe :police:, and when he was talking he did his little "pop the collar" idle move  Can't wait to start the Thane lovin' after this mission!

And hi, BalboaBaby! Hope you have a great time here! :)

This thought worries me more than I'd like to admit, but I just can't imagine Bioware killing off Thane in the middle of the game like that. How would they execute it? Thane isn't about to just stop breathing in the middle of a mission and keel over. Kepral's is a slow killer, and if I recall correctly it will continue to metastasize to other organs--it already has to his stomach and liver, according to the medical report in the dossier. I'm imagining that after a mission, you're called up to the Medical Bay and Thane's attached to a couple machines, as something happened when you weren't around? ...I can't believe I'm saying this, but now I'm imagining how Bioware would set up his death, if he did die during the middle of the game Image IPB Painful to think about, but interesting nontheless.

I'm trying to think of a fresh, inspiring reason why they wouldn't kill him off without giving us a choice, but I don't have anything besides the old standby reasons: He's a LI, and it isn't fair/Bioware is all about big choices, and curing Thane or the drell is a huge one/lots of small hints about managing Kepral's syndrome both in game and in Cerberus News/angry fans. All that said though, Bioware could easily manipulate the timeline in the last game to only last a couple of months. Thane gets to live through the game, dying right after in the epilogue. That would be the easy way out, I suppose. It would be super difficult, Bioware! Too much work! Don't go that route!

Not a fan of his aleternate outfit, it hides his beautiful eyes, and they're just so darn expressive. Bad cop Thane is..enticing. (Why is it so awesome describing Thane with a pause inbetween? I blame his "That sounds..intriguing" line ^_^)

I actually like the outfit, but I think those sunglasses are awful.  I wish we had the option to remove them.
