About the letter - some facts:

You get it after the romance scene (when Thane comes to your room). You don't get the letter if you take the renegade option. You also get the letter if Thane dies on the suicide mission ... if anyone was wondering - I just had to know.

Hmm so Thane did write that letter before the suicide mission. Thanks for sharing! A lot of people having been wondering about that.

It's remarkable; if a fully-romanced Thane dies during the suicide mission, you will still get the letter from him. So much drama.

I've been to the cinema last week to see an European festival movie. I need to mention that it is a place only for "art" movies. On the monitors showing the movies that were playing was also playing ME2 music, and yes, it was Thane's theme. I certainly didn't expect that. I know he's a classy guy, in the ME world, but it seems he is in RL too.

Oh well, I thought to share this.

:)

I too love Thane's theme. I have it on my Ipod and I listen to it every day. I'm listening to it now actually. I can't believe it. Actually, I can. ME2 has a brilliant musical score, much better than ME2 and even better than some films and Thane's theme is probably the best in game song.

Oh, wow, thanks for sharing. That's really interesting. Huh. It seems likely he wrote it right before coming to her and sent it afterwards, since...well, they only had two hours.

That's pretty damn miserable, that you get if he dies during the suicide mission. At the same time, masterstroke, evil BioWare writers, masterstroke. B)

Since the letter was written before, I bet Thane is like: I survived?

Shepard: YAY!!!!!

Thane: Indeed.

fixt.

I really like ME2 music in general.  I especially enjoy the Reflections bit and Thane's music - it's invigorating.  As it turns out, I had Shepard's bedroom music set to the song that sounds similar to it.  But I'm afraid my vote has to go to Samara's acquisition music for my favorite overall.  I remember coming up to the Wasea fight for the first time and pausing the game to note to a friend on Steam just how epic the music was >.>

I don't think Thane ever sent that letter though, it's just saved to his harddrive.

Icca raised a good point, and I agree. There is no way he wrote that all between going to Shepard's quarters and when they go through the Mass Relay.

In my opinion, I think yes, he has been working on it for a while, perhaps after the "look forward to the memories" conversation. But maybe it's only if you finish the entire romance that he finishes writing the letter. Perhaps Liara (because I think it was probably her that got those documents together. The old Shadow Broker may have found them but Liara probably arranged the ones she thought might be of interest to Shepard onto that terminal) only adds a finished Thane-love-letter to the information she has gathered.

Ah, the letter information is interesting, and it adds so much to the romance scene. Makes me think that when Thane came to see Shepard, he originally wanted to tell her he loved her. Then he started talking a little too much, and she touched his face, and he just broke down. Of course, that also makes me wonder: if Thane originally came down to tell Shepard he loved her and succeeded instead of having his emotional moment, would the romance scene have been as touching? How would things go instead?

One thing answered, and now I have so many more questions.

Just to confirm what Hana said: The letter wasn't SENT; it's only saved in Thane's personal files. Shepard wasn't supposed to read it just yet.

It's not sent.  Ever.  Before or after LotSB.  If he died in game before LotSB, it's not like it appears in her private email as part of his passing.  It makes me wonder when she is supposed to read it. (edit: read in addition as "what he intended to do with it.")

But I also have this sneaking suspicion that this wasn't taken into account when it was introduced via LotSB.  And is LotSB canon now even though it's optional content?

Wasn't Thane planning on Shepard discovering the letter when he was hospitalized/deceased?

And I have a pretty good feeling LotSB is considered canon. It's the first part of the 'bridging the gap' DLC, and I assume for anyone who didn't download it, Liara will be the new Shadow Broker anyway. They'll just give a quick explanation.

I also wonder when Shepard is supposed to read the letter, though it appears Thane wasn't going to send it to her anytime soon (according to what he says at the very beginning of the letter, at least).

LOTSB will be assumed to have been played if you don't bother playing it. That is to say, if you import a save where you did not complete LOTSB to ME3, you will be assumed to have completed the mission.

I wonder, would Thane have entrusted Kolyat with a packet for Shepard in the event of his death? We know he did for Kolyat but Kolyat received it early. Perhaps Kolyat has the letter and knows to give it to Shepard when she comes to tell him his father is dead.

How sweet would that be? Awwww...

The Kolyat/Shepard relationship remains squidgy in my head.  While I believe Thane believes you can love more than one in a lifetime, I think Kolyat probably still very deeply resents the loss of his mother.  Even assuming he can forgive his father and accept him again, I have a very hard time in my own head imagining Kolyat warming to Shepard in any way, especially if it's a LI!Shepard, or that any meeting involving the death of his father would be anything more than painful and awkward

If it were purely a matter of duty, I can see it happening much more easily than Shepard telling Kolyat his father is dead and Kolyat then shoving a letter in Shepard's face.

With his fist.

To pay her back for Thane's loyalty mission.

Kolyat/Shepard is an interesting relationship...probably why I write about it so much. Kolyat is still resentful towards Thane to a degree, and I'm sure Thane's romantic relationship with Shepard doesn't exactly help. In fact, I honestly don't see Romanced!Thane telling Kolyat about Shepard, at least for a while. They both need time to heal, and having your father introduce his new human girlfriend isn't exactly going to smooth things over. Kolyat will think Thane's trying to replace Irikah, get angsty again, and they're back to square one. I also get the feeling that relationships with humans aren't looked upon fondly for some reason. Not quite sure there.

I can see Kolyat and Shepard having some sort of talk after Thane's death, but I don't see it being a comfortable one in the slightest. Like I said above, I'm not even sure Thane would have told Kolyat if he was in a relationship, so that would be another kick in the teeth. Any way I slice it, Kolyat and Shep would need to be around each other for a long time to see anything beyond very reluctant acceptance on Kolyat's part.

Yes, in that scenario, Kolyat's own feelings must be taken into account as well. Would he approve of Shepard as his father's new "partner"? Lots and lots of questions.

I also get the feeling that Kolyat isn't the easily-convinced kind, if that makes any sense. He seems too destroyed by his mothers' loss.

Thanks Fiery!

I've been thinking... Has anyone wrote a letter back to Thane? Something that you could see your Shepard leaving for Thane to find?

I was playing around and I thought this up...

Thane,

For two years, I traveled across the sea then back and yet I wondered, lost and alone. Taking refusge among friends, I found my purpose. In you, I found my home.

My breath has no words that can express the words written upon my soul. You are my light in the darkness and my hope when I am lost. Know this, a heart that truly loves never forgets. I love you. If all else fails, my soul is bound to you and in you I find the strength to go on.

Walk with me. With your last breath, stay at my side and I will move heaven and earth for you.

Shepard
