I would hate a rescue mission. I sort of liked the subversion that DAO had--the toughest boss fight in the game and you go free, or surrendering and escaping or letting your friends bust you out (for extra hilarity!). They should be able to take of themselves, and not be a burden on me. The cool thing about dating your companions is that they can fight for themselves--someone like Kelly you need to rescue. Someone like Jack or Thane? I shouldn't be worried that they can't take care of themselves. Besides that, not too many people close to your LIs are on the same skill level.

Hopping in from the Garrus thread, since we've been discussing abductions too...

If we're talking Reapers, I don't think the Reapers think in terms of abduction and hostages.  They destroy or indoctrinate things.  Period.  Otherwise, I kind of agree with Saibh.  Yes, it might be cute and all, but my allies in ME2 are a bunch of freaking badasses.  They might need me to handle their family issues, but they sure as hell shouldn't need my help fighting anything short of an army of Thresher Maws with assault rifles taped to their gonads.  (For emphasis.)  As for rescuing Shepard--laughable.  It's Shepard.  Shepard deletes problems like this on the way to real errors.

Also, the whole rescuing your LI thing...eh.  I've never seen it carried out in a way that didn't feel as though one or both parties had the idiot ball glued to their face.

Oh, I'm not in favor of Shepard getting captured--but, in DAO's case, you weren't told "now you must surrender for plot reasons" because the situation was "hopeless" (as if you didn't regularly fight through hordes and hordes of enemies every single day). You also weren't told that fighting is the only option when it comes to surrender. It wasn't a matter of you being helpless, it's what you as a character thought the most prudent path would be. I'm not so sure this would be appropriate for Shepard, because if she can't talk her way out (when she wants), she shoots her way out. Surrender doesn't seem in character.

Also. Let me go see this abduction thing in the Garrus thread. I have never been over there.

Kolyat couldn't possibly replace Thane. Unheard of. No manly chest on display, no lushous lips. Sorry, I know there are lovers of Kolyat but he is a newb and just isn't up to par.

It's a couple pages back.  We're distractable little monkeys over there :innocent:

The thing with DA:O's scenario is that plot-wise, I agree with you.  It was a matter of your character making a pragmatic decision.  Mechanically, it may as well have been "hopeless"--unless you were a mage with Storm of the Century and didn't care how many times you had to try because B**** WAS GONNA DIE   So a lot of people just went with her or let themselves be taken in a fight because the fight was too hard to beat.

Generally, I can't see Shep surrendering.  Maybe if doing so as a gambit gives her some benefit later, but that's about it.  My Shep either talks, runs, or fights.  Surrender is not an option--that means defeat and most likely death.

Just so you all know I'm now imagining a prison break scene ala Zevran and Oghren, but instead it's Thane and Grunt (clown pants included).

Thane:  You will be less convincing if you are continually adjusting your clothing.

Grunt:  Are pants like these even necessary?

Thane:  We must look the part if we are to be believable.

Grunt:  *snorts*  Easier to convince them we're a pair of drunk turians who took a wrong turn at Ilium.

Thane:  That is plan B.

Grunt:  No.  Plan B involves me shooting something.  If you're smart, you'll hope it's not you.

Thane:  Point taken.  After you then.

And Ima chime in with the whole I Don't Think the Reapers Work That Way bit.  I'm more inclined to believe the content will involve building an army ala DAO/resolving issues among nations and then Shepard and crew go off on some special mission to find some special artifact that will dramatically hinder the reapers and will likely blow something up, then the final showdown.

With sprinkles of special squaddie content for any further unresolved issues.

Or maybe this is just what I'd prefer >.>

If something happened to Kolyat post successfully complete Thane loyalty mission... I wonder.   One of the things Thane says if you fail... is how trying to save Kolyat was the only thing he'd ever done of his own volition, and he  failed.  This is not to lessen Kolyat's value as a son, I don't think that's it at all, but I think taking that into account as a personal failure, that he really isn't good for anything except to be a tool for others, has a lot to do with how it affects him after.

It would be unfair to remark to Shepard that, when the time comes, she will have to accept his fate, if he's not accepting of death, himself - the possible difference in the two situations (loyalty mission v. hypothetical post-loyalty mission kolyat doom) is how much control over the situation Thane had, or believes he had.  And, to a lesser degree, how responsible he would be for it.  If the death was not something he could have prevented, I think he might be saddened, but not distraught.... or as distraught.  He's still losing the only good thing he ever added to the galaxy.

But I'd also like to think Kolyat might be afforded the same amount of protection (now) that Oriana receives, and I wonder how much of what Thane writes to his son includes preventative measures, things to look out for, and how to live under the radar.

While I'm sure Thane might provide Kolyat with some tips, I'm not sure he'd be receiving the same kind of care as Oriana does. I believe she mostly gets that attention because Miranda is a higher up in Cerberus, and she's pulled strings to do so. While I'm sure Thane may be willing to try and do the same for his son, I'm not sure he feels the need to, nor would Kolyat necessarily be willing to accept protection. He seems like the kind that says he can 'take care of himself.'

Bailey probably has a watchful on him though, C-Sec or not.

I have a question for the women on the board:

What would you do if a guy called you "Siha" in real life, how would you react?

(Of course this would mean the guy had to have played ME2 but that's besides the point. Work with me here.)

Just wondering....

No. I wouldn't want him to. 'Siha' is between Shepard and Thane. It would be like him calling me by someone else's name. So, if a random guy came up and called me that... considering all that I am, as well... I'd probably step back slowly and quietly and run to my car to engage the door locks. If it was a guy I was involved with, I'd probably retaliate by calling him Thane.

If a guy called me Siha in real life I would probably tell him to stop. I really don't want someone to call me that. Everytime I would hear it I would automatically think of Mass Effect, and that it's the name Thane gave Shepard. I would just find it a little strange that someone would call you a name that one fictional video game character gave another character.

If someone called me that, things most surely would go something like this:

Guy: 'Siha'...

Me: *laughs her ass off*

Me: *keeps laughing her ass off*

Me: *put hand on his shoulder* Sorry pal, but it's not the same if It's not Thane.

I wouldn't mind as long as is while fooling/joking around ( ala: Shepard - Wrex ), but else I would see it as lame...

That is a very interesting question, Hainkpe. While it's not my place to answer it, I'm sure as hell enjoying reading the answers! :D

I'm not really a fan of romantic nicknames in general. Most of the time it seems too cheesy and yet when Thane calls Shepard "Siha" I swoon. Lol He's the only one who can pull that off and make it sound sweet and genuine.

Maybe I'm a cold person, but it'd be...ooh, a rather big turn-off for several reasons. A) Can't he think up his own nicknames? B) Can't he find a nickname of a not-fictional race of a fictional game? C) Exactly what does he think he's going to accomplish by calling me "siha"? D) He's weird. E) Fine, I'll start calling him "Thane", see how he likes it. Once he objects, I'll switch to "Alistair". Then "Oghren".

So what if I'm judgmental? Don't judge me!

If a guy called me Siha and meant it, I'd probably retreat. Hastily. While pulling out the pepper spray.

But if he was just doing it for the lols, well, that's fine.

Cindalkitty. Your avatar. I love it.
My boyfriend actually tried to call me siha once. I'm pretty sure I just stood there, shell-shocked, said "No" and walked away. Now I'm wishing I used one of the responses everyone else came up with--they're golden!

(It beats being called the priiize though. My reaction to that was less quiet Image IPB)

Going along the same lines, why do you guys find siha so sweet, and different from the usual pet name? I've seen that said a few times, and I'm curious Image IPB

Well, mostly because it's not being called "Shepard" by your love interest. It's sweet without feeling corny or demeaning, and is probably the most affectionate thing Shepard gets called (out of "Battlemaster", "Shep", "skipper", "boss-lady", and "Shepard-Commander"). It's also very appropriate for Shepard.

Ah, on another note--I believe a while ago everyone was talking about whether Thane felt like Shepard had been sent by the gods. In conversation, yeah, he actually does, he says as much. I was really surprised to hear him say it. It's when he's telling you he was expecting to get caught by Nassana's guards, and Shepard picks the neutral option of "I guess you were lucky". He says it was an intervention from the gods.

It's just very sweet and romantic when he starts calling Shepard siha, and I just love the way he says it. When Thane starts calling you that he's doing out of love, and because he believes siha is what Shepard is. I also just like the idea of someone calling Shepard something other than Shepard. I think Thane is the only one to give you a nickname, and I smile evertime he says it.

Yes, Thane does in fact think of Shepard as having been sent by the gods. I even remarked it in my thread here.

It's just so beautiful. He LOVES Shepard!

See, all this is why I need to go back and play through my Thanemancing Shepard again.
I completely forgot about him thinking Shepard was sent by the gods in his recruitment. Go ahead, throw rocks at me, I totally deserve it. I know siha's meaning, and I think I was touched by how naturally he slides into calling Shepard that--it just slips out, but it fits and feels like he should have been calling her that all along. But the responses give me even more of a reason to love it!

Sorry Garrus, but I'm going back to Thane now. Reach and flexibility can wait. Though I get the impression that Thane would be far more flexibile than Garrus
