My only reason for being suspicious of the hanar is that it's been eight centuries since they made first contact with the drell and brought them to Kahje. 800 FREAKING YEARS. I'm fairly certain that 800 years from now, humans will have a cure to cancer if we haven't already wiped each other out. Also, since Kepral's seems to kill drell after they are capable of having children (Thane as an example), non-communicable, and affects them due to their fundamental biology, my guess is that Kepral's is neither selected for nor against. It probably manifested pretty soon after the drell turned up on Kahje.

I know that humans are relatively short-lived in the ME verse and as such our technology may evolve faster, but eight centuries is a really, really long time and we've never gotten any indication that the hanar are remarkably long-lived. So I'm forced to conclude that either they're really not good at research or really dragging their feet. Tentacles. Whatever.

There is some confusion as to those dates though.
Codex says it has been 800 years since Rakhana began it's "swift descent into lifelessness", 200 years since they have been a part of the galactic community, and Thane says "The hanar found us a century ago. They sent hundreds of ships. Evacuated thousands of us."

So perhaps it has only been a century, who knows.

you both are kiwis?  How did I miss this?  I am not a kiwi, but
I LOVE your country.  Did an internship there in college.  Every kiwi

I also like the birds and fruits, even.  [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/wink.png[/smilie]  Wish I lived there with you two!!

 I soooo wish I could!!  I am going to have to come back for a visit sometime in the next couple years.  I need to introduce my husband to all the wonders of NZ.  Then he will fall in love with it too, and we'll just have to move!  Hehe.  The plan is in motion!!

Well, okay, 100 years...800 years, it's a big difference, but it's still at least 100 flippin years. Something major should have been completed in either time frame, IMHO.

Actually, I'm originally from Omaha, Nebraska, but my daughter and I moved here five years ago. We love it here. The quality of life is just wonderful! And yes, the people are simply awesome!

Ok, an hour huh? Where are you??

Hmm, I have to admit that I have never thought about the hanar and their research into Kepral's and compared it to the timeframe. Now that you guys mentioned it, 100 years is a damn long time to research into something like that when you take into account everything else that they can do in this universe and how advanced science is. With the equipment and methods they have at their disposal for doing science, mapping drell DNA, looking for solutions... yeah, tbh, it seems off that there are no results whatsoever, not even a trial cure. Or maybe there is and we really need to go Japanese on all those tentacles!

Also, slightly unrelated, but I'm really curious as to what's the age-frame in this thread? I'm positively thrilled to hear that people have hubbies and children and whatnot! I'm around mid-twenties myself, recently married with no kids (yet) apart from three doggies. From the fandoms I've seen, Thanedom really stands out in the sense that the people seem to be generally well in their adulthood, youngest people being in their early twenties (of course there are exceptions, this is just a generalization). I guess Thane's charms work on the more mature crowd, hahah. Sure ME is a rated game, but as a whole the ME fandom still seems to have its fair share of teenagers. Not that I have anything against them, it's just nice to have older people too, with thoughts more along the lines of my own. :)

As for masskink - I prefer the lighthearted fun too. I get things DONE. Of course, the quality can't match a beta'd, thought-out fic, but most of the time the raw material is good and with just a little polishing, you'd have some superb fics there.

Right now I'm dreaming of writing this longer fic, but I'm dreading the process, seeing that I'm talking about a writing process that would probably last for a long time. Anyone here ever written long, multi-chapter fics? How do you work that thing?

They have discovered something major, though, they know what causes it.
We still, after thousands of years, do not know what causes most cancers.

Also, they wouldn't have started working on the cure until they had found out what it was.

Mordin: Shepard, have you secured the ground floor?
Shepard: (munching noises) Yes.
Mordin: ...Are you eating?
Shepard: (with her mouth full) Maybe.
Mordin: Don't recall packing rations for mission. Explain?
Awkward pause.
Shepard: Okay, fine. I'm eating the jellies.
Mordin: Shepard! Glands in hanar skin tissue produce potent toxins! Can severely damage your nervous system!
Shepard: Yeah...
Mordin: Are you alright?
Shepard: The bad news is, I have a wicked tummy ache. The good news is all my burps taste like candy.

Haha... around here, it just goes without saying.  Be prepared at all times.  Most of the posts lately have been snort-worthy.

Raven, how is it that Shep has become so highly tolerant of tasty alien venoms?  It could not possibly be from licking drell, I don't think.

Drelicking. It's what you do with Thanepop!

Shepard is immune to candy-based toxins due to extensive genetic modification and thorough immunity building exercises performed in her cabin and occasionally on top of the table in the life support deck. Or in the Normandy's ventilation, per hanar05's lovely illustration.

You know, I remember one time I had to, for whatever reason, explain drell biology to my mother in detail and I told her, "Prolonged oral contact causes hallucinations." She didn't even consider mouth-to-mouth contact. The perv.

Hmmm. Being the mother of a 17 year old...well, that has nothing to do with it...I tend to agree with your mother's thoughts.

I think you're right about Thanedom, and I think it has to do with the character's age vis-a-vis the player's age.  I like Thane, but I'm a Garrus girl myself.  I'm a college kid IRL--Thane's old enough to be my father.  I know Shepard's older, but there's only so much player/character distinguishing I can do before it really starts to break my brain.  As a result, I tend to prefer younger LIs (Garrus, Alistair, Bishop, etc.) to older LIs.  I was, what, 17 when I was introduced to KOTOR 1?  Carth's SON was closer to my age than he was.  Very very uncomfortable

Also, longer fics are the DEVIL.  The only way I ever get them done is by carefully outlining them in great detail before I write them, or by writing the entire god damn thing first, then publishing it as I polish it.  Trying to publish it as I write it inevitably results in me either writing myself into a corner or losing interest if I don't have a clear idea of where it's going.   Betas are also indispensible, if only for bugging you to finish a damn chapter :D

Haha, well I am half Thane's age and around the same age as Kolyat >_>
I'm not sure if age plays a big part for me.

It could mean that I am mature for my age, but I'm pretty sure that's not right! XD

Cancer was first discovered 3000-1500 BC.

Um, I have absolutely no idea. I'm assuming it's a bunch of fans asking another fan (Thane) questions.? It doesn't really show dialog very well. maybe you have to have an account? Uh, somebody?
