"I have been and always shall be your friend." I love that scene. Kirk and Spock.

^ Yes, Gnas. Bromance at its best. Though they were opposites, they were the best of friends.

Edit: actually, when I think about it, I can see Thane in this type of friendship.  He wouldn't need to be just like Shep to be his loyal friend.  Jacob seems more like he wouldn't be friends with you if you didn't see eye-to-eye on everything.  Like he gets all pissy when you bring Thane the assassin on board.  But Thane, I can see him having a mutual respect for Shep... no matter if he always agrees with him.

Friendship. How lovely and vital yet so.. difficult at times. Its one of the greatest things in this world. It makes you begin to think about how this is reflected in ME and ME2. The emotional connection, the character interactions.

I wonder, would you consider Thane and Shepard friends or just lovers? I never thought about it.

Ultimately, I think it depends on your Shepard. But I would say that Thane and Shepard's romance scene is definately the one that depicts them as 'lovers' than any other of the romance scenes.

(Sorry Garrus, my imagination can fill in your romance scene a bit ;)

The very fact that he says (or types) the 'l' word to femshep, and is the only LI to do that definately means that he is more of a 'lover' than anyone else. Calling Shepard his Siha also speaks volumes, as he fleches out this bit of drell culture later.

Back from work guys! And Raven is certainly our wild child! The jungle girl pic made me giggle, I am a little bit muscular from cycling and that, but it would be a bit odd to see a woman that muscular... Just saying? Lol!

@Tash I would agree, Thane and Shepard would definitely be more on the lover side than the friend side.

@abnocte - you must watch it again. It is such a great movie. Khaaaaaaan!!

@Gnas - Ha, think I edited the last post when you posted your thoughts. We both believe love and friendship are not mutually exclusive, of course. :) Personally, I feel that Thane and my Shep are truly friends.  Both have been through a lot, and feel comfortable discussing it with each other. I can see different dynamics between Shep and different characters. Like for me, I felt there was always a deep mutual respect between my Shep and Samara. Also, Grunt felt more like an earned friendship... rather than a commander/subordinate thing. Other characters, I still feel like it's a "work" relationship - not really a friendship. One thing I think the writers did to ensure this was the fact that some characters call you "Commander," others "Shepard." The second always makes me feel like my character and theirs are level with each other... they see each other as equals. Thane always calls her Shep, or, later, Siha. When she's called commander, I think it may subconsciously make us snap into a different role.

@Tentura Many fine points you have made there. The only two exceptions I would make are Garrus (yeah, Tash) and Tali. They seems more like friends than working relationships. Although both still call her Shepard.

Yes, if I remember correctly, Tali and Garrus use both names. I agree - they both are definitely Shep's friends. I excuse their use of 'commander' in my mind, because they were with her back on the SR1. It was run more military to me... so perhaps that's what they were used to back then? I don't know. It all makes sense in my head, haha. I'm sure the writers intended for people to interpret all these characters differently.

Yeah, I can. I prefer the romance route, but I don't mind a platonic relationship with Thane either. He does sort of remind me of Spock, from what little I have seen of the original ST. His demeanor and philosophy.

They are the most loyal out of all the characters I believe. Even more so than a different LI (if they had their loyalty missions.) Garrus only calls Shepard 'commander' twice, both times it in a joke (or a bit shocked.)
Garrus: I err, didn't think you would feel like sparring commander.
Garrus: That's pretty extreme commander...
I believe Garrus is even more loyal and closer to Shepard than Tali though, because you can see the relationship progression from ME1 (student-teacher) to ME2 (equals.)
But this is a Thane thread. I think it will be very interesting to see how femshep and Thane's romanced relationship progresses in ME3. Bioware have done it wonderfully with Garrus and Tali, but Thane is such a deep character, and mysterious...
Ooooh, mysterious....

Thanks for the welcome, everyone. :) And that picture of Garrus and Thane is awesome. I think the two of them would get along well. They don't seem like the type to talk much (Thane mostly keeps to himself and Garrus has his calibrations), but they would be good battle buddies. Garrus was impressed by Thane's skill when they first met.

Tasha vas Nar Rayya wrote...

*Waves back* hey Kim! I'm only occassionally on the Garrus thread now because I need more hours in a day for long posts :( Thane is like Garrus in this though, I don't think he would mind if you were upmost paragon or total renegade. Samara is the same. Paragade is the best way to play, you get to take down the baddies with some great lines, but you can also be nice to your crewmates! Also, it means you can solve both the crew arguments.
Assassins you say? Dare I ask Kim, Alistair or Zevran? We have very mixed views on this thread, but I am a Zev girl!

Actually, the Renegade FemShep I had planned to use for Thane's romance is being played out as a Cousland in DAO. She'll romance Zevran and have a political marriage with Alistair. (Hopefully I can pull that off right.) I don't really have a DAO favorite, unless you count Awakening - then it's Anders and Justice.

Speaking of crew arguments, isn't it great that Garrus and Thane never get into conflicts with the other squadmates? They both know that the mission is too important. Jacob even tries to start an argument with Thane, but he just stays polite. My MainShep, with her krogan-sized temper, wonders how. xD

About Renegade interrupts - I agree with all of those, and add beating up Kelham in Thane's loyalty mission to the list. It's hard to make Shepard resist knocking him out.

MainShep: Oh no, he did not just call me a b****!
Thane: Calm down, Shepard. We need--
MainShep: *biotic punch*
Thane: --information. o__o Did you kill him?
MainShep: Not sure, but let's get out of here before his lawyer shows up, just in case.
Kelham's Lawyer: ...
MainShep: Don't question me. I'm a Spectre!
Thane: *facepalm*

I'll have to think more about the question of friendship/romance with Thane. His FemShep isn't planned out enough yet for me to answer that, except that Thane's romance does seem the most "romantic" of any option (even though Garrus is my favorite).

Sorry, I was posting during this. Of course, four of my six playthroughs Shepard and Thane were just friends. Posted Image
Thane is a good bro, him and Garrus were always my 'deadly duo' on my mainshep. I think a friendship between the two would be worth even more because Thane doesn't (and he admits this) really talk to the rest of the crew. ANd even on missions, he talks, but it is rarely banter like Garrus, Tali, Mordin, Grunt and Jack in particular. So the fact that he is so introvert means more to his (friendzoned!) relationship with Shepard. In my case anyway.
A very stylish turian takes priority! Posted ImagePosted Image

Hahaha... that is great.  But wait - you can't KILL him without getting the info!  Then you would not be able to stop Kolyat and Thane would be sad.  Not cool!

I'm looking forward to hilariously befriending Thane with ManShep once I get around to ME2. ManShep is a Spacer, so he forms quick and lasting bonds with weird people habitually. He might be impatient with Thane's more thoughtful side, but ManShep is like a big, infectiously happy puppy with his crew. I can picture some brotastic moments with him.

Shep: Thane, we just destroyed the Collectors. You are going to come get smashed with me 'n Grunt 'n Zaeed 'n Garrus. *takes a swig*
Thane: Shepard, I'm not sure that's wise--
Shep: Oh, come on, sourpuss!
Thane: I am not...sour.
Shep: Don't be angry. You know what your problem is? You haven't drunk enough. Also, you need to get laid stat.
Thane: *facepalm* Arashu grant me patience.  This is a terrible idea.

This is probably one of my favourite bromance lines from Thane if you get him to play badcop.

Thane: The law is only a protection when everyone agrees to be bound by it *puts his collar up* we don't.

It is spoken so perfectly! And Thane's facepalms... Ah, renegade Shep, you do amuse me!

And you can marry Alistair as a human noble and have Zev on the side so I hear, but Alistair will always ask you to choose if his and Zev's apporval gets too high, so I think it is a fine line, you had best do some research Kim. And Zev's approval gets high pretty quick (maybe the warden is a drell too and causes people to hallucinate!)

Ok, I'll quit it with the terrible jokes...

Anders was ok for me, he was too much like my male friends though, and it would have suited him to be an LI. So I never had a thing for him, Justice was brilliant. And Shale!

You see Shale, if you are in a park and a bird poos on you, then you just don't go out with her again!

Ok, really, I should stop with the jokes...

Most of the time, my number one favorite is not a romance option. So typical that I liked the Awakening characters better. xD My favorite in Mass Effect is Saren, but at least there are two great options - Garrus and Thane.

I don't think it's really possible to kill Kelham (too bad though, Saren interrogated people and killed them after he got his information). It is possible to still find Kolyat if Kelham gets knocked out because that's what I did on my first playthrough. There was a happy ending for everyone. :) Kolyat didn't kill the turian, the turian lived, Kolyat didn't go to prison and started talking to his father again.

@Tasha: I like that Thane line too. The bad cops tend to be awesome. Just look at Garrus. Too bad he couldn't watch.

I'll be doing a lot of research to make sure that my plan with Zevran, Alistair, and my Warden goes well. She has some strange romance choices, like being originally planned with Thane's romance in mind until I thought, "Oh wait, she'd work so much better with Kai Leng." xD She loves assassins.

Take her back a few centuries and hook her up with Ezio Auditore Da Firenze! And everyone loves assassins! But it is a shame they are becoming a bit cliche... Which is why it's great that Thane certainly isn't a stereotypical assassin. Love triangles are never something I can do,,, Hehe.

And Garrus certainly is a bad cop!

@Tasha: Yeah, Katherine Shepard/Cousland would like to join in Assassin's Creed, or at least play it. And in DAO, she does get to be an assassin. xD Even though she won't be romancing Thane now, she'll still bring him everywhere after he's recruited. Their combat styles work really well together, and they'd still get along good enough.

@Raven: Your Shepard sounds so realistically drunk there. xD Poor Thane.

/de-lurk

Ejoslin has a Zevran romance FAQ that should answer any questions for ya. Or you could ask her in the Zev thread over on the DA boards. She probably knows the exact approval ratings you'd need for both Al and Zev.

Anyway, hello fellow Thane fans! I am a huge fan of the sexy green assassin as well. In my current playthrough I'm romancing Thane with a Renegon Shepard <3. Someone mentioned they don't like love triangles, and I don't either... my Thane romances are all from my romance-free ME1 characters. I'd feel bad in ME3 if I had to choose between Thane and Kaidan, since they both seem to be sensitive types, and I love both characters. Do you guys usually cheat on someone to romance Thane?

Something tells me Jamie (my current jerkass-with-a-heart-of-gold ManShep) wouldn't even ask.  He'd just slosh the better part of a bottle of the cheapest, foulest whiskey into poor Thane's precious pot of tea and claim he was doing his bro a favor

Thane: ...Shepard, you should know that the tea is very rare off Kahje.  Very expensive.
Shep:  And now it's expensive plant juice with alcohol!
Thane: *sigh*  Waste not, I suppose.

(several cups of spiked tea later)

Thane:  Shepard...I should  *tips over* go to the infirmary.
Shep: *shakes his head* Lightweight.
Thane: Your concoction is strong enough to drop a krogan.
Shep: Good for two things.  Cleanin' engines and killin' brain cells.

And they stumble off together to Mordin.  God, I love drunken fratboy ManShep.  He's great.  And something tells me Thane's a bit of a sissy when it comes to hard liquor.

One thing that bothers me about Thane's condition is that its 'un-curable' and its a problem with the lungs if memory serves so let me ask a question. We're in a universe that has insane technology and they don't have the ability to give Thane artificial lungs? We have artificial lungs right now so a few hundred years in the future how are there not any lung trasplant/ artificial replacement options?
