Well Kaiden was the one who broke it off, so he really doesn't have a leg to stand on.
See. I was thinking about this last night.
I really hope that if you "cheated" on your ME1 love, it doesn't have that much of an impact in ME3 - or at least BW doesn't rub guilt in our faces. I mean, let's look at the facts really quick:
1. Shepard was dead for 2 years. ME1 love interest could do nothing about it except grieve and move on. Normally, coming back from the dead is a nigh impossibility. Love interest had no hope of continuing a romance, plan and simple.
2. ME1 love interest is shown on Horizon as quite upset and irrational. Total turn off to Shepard. I can see being upset, but it's been two frickin' years. And Shepard is ACTUALLY alive, goshdarnit! So calm down with your accusations and your misunderstandings. That whole confrontation was so off-putting, I'm surprised that some people are staying faithful.
3. Liara...you are so cold. She isn't the woman one of my Shepard's fell in love with. She's so like Matriarch Benezia it's chilling. And yes, I know she bartered with the Illusive Man to keep Shepard out of the Collectors' clutches, but it's so hard to get beyond her newfound attitude that I can understand why some people choose new LIs (me included.)
I think Bioware did a great job of making the new LIs so awesome, and the old LIs so...cruel and cold, that I think that ME3 should give us the option of breaking it off from the old LIs cleanly and without much ado. If they rubbed guilt in my face about "cheating" (even though technically it's not!) I will hardly be able to handle it.
