The writers are as attached to the characters as we are. I doubt they would give Thane an unsatisfying end to his story, but raging is inevitable if they do. I am a little curious about this new writer Thane has -- didn't someone talk about that a while ago? -- and what he'll do.
Personally I think Thane and Miranda are the characters who are most likely to come back. Thane is a popular character (despite the polls), even outside his romance subplot, and Miranda has the least chance of dying in the suicide mission. I think BW wrote them with the expectation that they would return. It just sounds logical to me. I don't know.
It is the game's finale. All of our decisions made in the previous two games -- even the little ones -- are apparently going to have an astounding impact in ME3. They don't have to worry about progressing the story into another game, like they did with ME2 and why Kaidan/Ashley only had cameos. If former LIs are going to return, our current LIs should return as well. It's all led up to this moment after all -- why leave any character out, unless they've died previously?
And if players think it "cheapens the story" if he is alive or cured, they weren't thinking it through. To me it's just as possible for him to die as it is for him to be cured. It's just as likely that cure will come with a heavy price.
It was just as possible for Shepard to stay dead than it was for him/her to come back to life. Guess which one yielded fruit?
Even that had a heavy price: the Illusive Man thinks he owns Shepard. If (s)he goes "rogue" (s)he may have more enemies than the Reapers on his/her tail.

Yeah, I hate how people assume Thane's going to be dead in ME3. Just because he's sick doesn't mean BW can't come up with some reason why he'd still be alive.

Yeah I agree with this. The fact that it is the last game gives the writes much more freedom. They can "end" thing without worrying about the consequences.
I remeber us talking about the letter being written after the original writer quit. And if a new writer wrote it, what did we think about his or hers version of Thane. I certainly felt like the real Thane to me.
And I dont really know why they say a cure would cheapen him, since there is clearly a cure in the making. Its just not finished yet. Bringing someone back from the dead however is as cheap as it gets.
If my Shep can take on the Reapers she can kick TIM ass, and I think there is a good possibilty of ending up as enemies depending on the direction you take in the game.

That video is definitely a fav of many of us. In fact, it was about time it got posted again!!
I can't think of much that hasn't already been said about people assuming Thane will be dead in ME3. Suffice it to say I find it annoying when I see the "who's going to be in ME3" threads and people just say Thane: dead, Mordin: dead. I just cannot see the writers putting all the effort into creating his character, (his species, even!!) just to toss him out in the next installment.

Well if you don't mind I would like to stay a while...
I support curing Thane in ME3 too, because Thane is really a fascinating character. But I think the chances are quite good for a cure, because it is hinted in the game (at least in lotSB) that there are possiblities to cure Thane e.g. with a transplantation.
I don't really know why people seem to think that Thane is only with this disease interesting - this is really nonsense. I suppose it is because they don't really spend time with Thane and don't take him on missions with them. I discovered at least for me, that I was never quite fond of some squadmembers that I never took with me and when I just started to bring them often with me on missions I liked them much more than before. And if it is not the favourite squadmember, some people may think it is (for them) not important if this character is alive or not. This is why they write "dead in ME3" because they simply don't care, but that doesn't mean that this will happen. If they would really listen to the game, they would see all the hints for Thanes cure and not speaking of a "magical cure".
So please, don't let this sadden you.

I think what you are saying is right - too many people just hear, "I'm dying," and then discount him for the rest of the game. I think several of the characters suffer from being 'counted out' before people get to know them - Jack seems a very good example. Samara and Miri I think take a while for people to warm up to, as well. I think people need to take the time to get to know all the characters, just like you said. I like them all, in their own ways. I even have an appreciation for Jacob, who I know lots of people dislike.
I think sometimes there is a bit of immaturity and competitiveness in people's posts about LIs. Too often I see stuff that boils down to: "I like X as a love interest, so I hope Y and Z die in ME3!" That is just stupid. I personally prefer Thane to Kaidan, but I certainly hope he gets an equally awesome romance ending in ME3. The same for all the LIs. I wouldn't want him to die just because he's not my favorite. Is it so hard to just accept that we all have different opinions and like different LIs? *eyeroll* Oh some people... <_<

I had the same experience with the squadmates, I often liked them better when I used them, and got to know them better. Some people probably never even bothered with Thane,so they dont know him aswell as we do. And his DESIRE to live!

I just think people want to kill of characters in the belief that their own favourite gets more screen time. Which is just silly..

I may sound a wee bit morbid for saying this, but when Thane said 'I'm dying,' that piqued my interest immediately. Mind you, I do have a thing for assassins in general, although I hope it isn't a stereotype that becomes ruined, like vampires. I can't think of vampires in the same way since Twilight. Now they are all just sparkly softies to me
As for the whole romance competition thing. I am a regular on this thread, but everyone knows where my loyalties lie
I always have everyone survive the SM, because they all have a story, and I want to see their stories develop.
Here is for Thane in ME3!!

One thing is maybe that people don't really have the background info but just write what they read somewhere else, like that with Mordins age and therefore argue that he must be dead in ME3 because he is too old.
I am really looking forward to see more Drell in ME3, hopefully some female Drells too (together with some female Turians... but I suppose I wouldn't recognize female Volus, Elcor, Batarians or Hanar as female).
Oh and I think Thane is from the three Drells that we already know the best looking one

That is interesting, because for me it is more the opposite, because it makes me really sad. But it didn't stopped me from romancing him with my Shep. I don't think that he needs this aura of dead around him, he is so very interesting and fascinating without this.
In his recruiting mission, when you see him for the first time, I think this is a really stunning moment that captured my interest - and this is before he says that he is going to die.
As for Garrus and Thane - they are both so different but awesome on their own way.
For me it is always so hard to decide who to romance, Thane, Garrus, Kaidan (and hopefully in ME3 Joker)... it seems that I can't have enough Sheps for all of them

#1 - Thane is the best looking!! #2 - Thane is the best looking
AND, I'll add #3 - Thane will be as interesting a character "cured" as he is "dying", look at Shep!!!
Fiery - love the desert pic, thanks, and agree that people tend to "not see things more thoroughly"
I also see a continued alliance with Cerberus/TIM - yeah, he's miffed right now, but Shep did tell him that she (he) was going through the relay to destroy the collectors and get her(his) crew back soooooo, there's that. Then, there's the fact that TIM needs Shep, and invested mega $$$, so he has an "ulterior motive" somewhere, and Shep needs TIM resources (even with Liara as new SB). SO, they'll make nice nice after a bit.....imo
