I've never done it myself, but I have seen it on youtube. It really is very sad to see what happens to him if you fail.

I failed Thane's mission the first time and had to replay it...it was incredibly sad. Thane needs more hope besides the love of my femshep..*holds up "cure Thane" banner*

I've seen it on youtube, and that actually made me want to have one or two Shepards who fail his loyalty mission. It was a sad moment, but it was also a powerful one with a lot of great dialogue. Poor Thane. The writers did a great job, and look what happens. xD

Exactly. Awesome dialogue. Extremely well-written. It's a bit of a shame though that you have to be so mean to Thane to get it. Similar one with Tali, loved her dialogue when you turned in the evidence, but I still think Thane's lines there may have been one of the best in whole guddamn game.

My Shepards won't really be mean to Thane. The first one to fail his loyalty mission will do so because he's directionally challenged and honestly lost track of the guy he was following. He's a soldier who likes to fight in close combat, so sneaking around on the high levels isn't something he's used to. Jumping down from the high levels to kill the guy before Kolyat gets to him is more his style. I'll just do the mission normally without reloading. I always get lost there too. xD

The second Shepard to fail kind of does it on purpose. She doesn't understand why Thane wouldn't want his kid to be an assassin. She's also the one who will turn in the evidence at Tali's trial. There will be a lot of those sad, powerful moments in her playthrough. Well, at least for me. She doesn't care.

Even though I'm a Kaidan fan through and through, Thane had me from the very beginning of ME2. I always stick to one Shepard (my canon) who is Kaidan's, but I just had to make a Sheppie for Thane

Welcome! I'm in the same boat as you, just had to make a Thane Shepard (or two.) But usually a Garrus groupie .
I'm not in the group, but I posted a few times on the Kaidan thread when the current one first started out. Welcome again!
And Thane's dialogue when he fails is heartbreaking, and beautiful too. He is an extremely well written character, with a VA who really does it justice.

And um... I do apologise, but I failed his loyalty mission while watching the techno turian...
And after looking through my photos: WHY do I not have a picture of the techno turian?! Darn it.
Welcome to idoless24 as well. The cure Thane banner is truly amazing!
And rusty, Thane's eyes look so emotional in that picture.

Probably because it's hard to get a good view of him without flycam? I didn't notice him at all until someone mentioned it on the forums. A new reason to fail his loyalty mission!

It would be cool if Thane has similar dance moves to the techno turian. He's the best dancer we've seen out of both games. I hope Garrus was taking notes. At least that would mean he was doing something during Thane's loyalty mission... as opposed to helping me keep track of the target.

I never failed his mission...my sheppie understands why he doesn't want his son to do this, so yeah, even my canon one didn't..

The only time I failed was when the game glitched on me. Good thing I have a save from the beginning of the mission.

Me too.  I didn't even think to go on with the game and talk to him on the ship, though.  As soon as I realized I'd failed the mission, I was scrambling to reloading my last save, haha.

I like to look at all the dialogue that I know I otherwise wouldn't hear. So I'm afraid I did fail the LM just to hear the dialogue, and like Kim and Nod said, it is very well written.

Of course, it is also heartbreaking, so I reloaded faster than Chikitta Vas Paws, and I don't have any playthroughs where I failed the LM.

But yeah, I do understand why he doesn't want his son to follow his footsteps. From Thane's experience, his career as an assassin has only brought him sorrow and tragedy, and as he says on the LM (another extremely well written line.)

'I have taken many bad things out of the world. You are the only good thing I have ever added to it.'

He doesn't want his sons pure life to become tainted by becoming a murderer. Totally understandable from Thane's point of view.

Too sad to fail Thane's LM. I couldn't do it. He seems to be the only one that really takes it badly. I failed other's and it didn't hurt my Shep as much as. Hadda go back, reload and smack Kolyat upside the head....

Failing Thane's loyalty mission is friggin depressing. I could only watch it on youtube, I couldn't bring myself to do it in game. It's one that actually makes sense that he would be more likely to die on the suicide mission disloyal. He legitimately just doesn't want to live anymore.

True, never thought about that before.
The whole disloyalty = death on the SM probably only makes genuine sense with Thane. With the others, I can see if it is something nagging on their mind, but Thane would be the only one to actually not want to live like that anymore.
It is really sad though. And I did play it through, but reloaded straight away.
I could only watch Thane's rejection on youtube too. But as some of the rejections go, Shepard was alright with him about it.

The first screenie is very 'don't mess with me.' And he looks very ninja-esque in the second and third ones.
