@mnomaha - Hmmmm...I certainly can post about Portland, and might also suggest that you check out a show called "Portlandia". Heh! I'll make this as simple as pros/cons (prostitutes and convicts....lol! Sorrry, feeling silly today *smirk*). Disclaimer** Though I have lived in the area for all of my 43 years, this is still entirely opinion....hope I don't rub anyone the wrong way. ;)

PRO's
1) Willamette and Columbia Rivers - I must admit, I am attached to water features (be it a lake, the ocean or a river). I also love activities around water (swimming, kayak/canoeing, fishing, ect..), so having these two waterways in the city, is such a positive.

2) Parks - Portland has some fantastic parks. Washington Park, Hoyt Arboretum, Forest Park, Pittock Mansion, Mt. Tabor, just to name a few. Not to mention all the parks actually in the city itself. I live near Laurelhurst Park, and it would be a perfect example of a city park in an old established Portland neighborhood.

3) Food/coffee/booze - We really have it good for these things. Restaurants, roasters and wineries/distillaries/brewers.....we got ya covered. :D

4) Bike friendly - we have a lot of bike friendly path ways and routes. Good for commuting and just for fun and exercise.

5) Entertainment - Portland boasts a number of theatres for everything from concerts to plays. Combined with our eateries and outdoor activities, it can be a pretty entertaining town. Lots of local events as well.

6) Architecture - most of the older Portland neighborhoods, have beauitiful homes and great layouts for including small shops, theatres, breweries and restaurants. Depending on where you choose to live, you can almost walk to everything you need. (my area is a great example of this).

7) Weather - This belongs in the "con" section as much as the "pro" section. It is a temperate climate, so no terrible extremes. Not too hot during summer (with the exception of a few days to a week or two). Not too cold during winter (think midwest winters.....not.even.close! hehe). And you can experience the change in seasons for the most part.

8) People - Again, another pro AND con. We have some friendly, weird, funny people....just like any place I suppose. Again, watch "Portlandia" for some interesting riffs on the people of PDX..ha!

9) Liberals - if you fall on the liberal side of things, this place has you covered. We haven't had a conservative mayor/city council since the 70's...practically.

10) Recycling - Portland does this like a religion.

11) Diversity in geography - LOL wasn't sure how to word that. Basically, PDX is has easy access to a lot of land features. The ocean is only an hour to an hour and half away. Mt. Hood is in the opposite direction, and has skiing (both downhill and xcountry) and snowshoeing during winter, and hiking/climbing, mt. biking, fishing, swimming (lots of lakes in the Mt. Hood region) during the summer. And the Gorge is absolutely one of my favorite places to go, and it's just a quick ride out on I84. :)

CON's

1) Politics - For someone like me who is admittedly a moderate, the politics in this town are too liberal. It has caused a rate of taxes that is over the top, IMO. Even though we don't have a sales tax in Oregon, we have the following (BTW, I am speaking strictly as a Multnomah County resident): the usual federal/state income tax, a Multnomah County income tax, a Metro tax, Property tax (if you own property). Then there are the taxes we forget about; luxery taxes, gas tax, utility taxes, ect... This wouldn't be so bad if my next "con" wasn't on the list.

2) Jobs and Businesses - We had more jobs created in the public sector than in the private sector. This doesn't work well (but it can also explain the higher taxes, eh? hehe). We need the private industry and businesses to be bolstered to support these communities and to pay these taxes in the first place. Unfortunately, Portland has been unaccomidating for sometime on encouraging small business and industry. We are very fortunate that Nike, Intel, and some other bigger companies have been willing to stay. But we have missed out on opportunities, and small businesses get the bums rush quite often. I mentioned food related businesses being booming. There is SOME truth to that. But more often than not, it is simply of "one business leaves, the likes of it replaces". Not a lot of staying power, in other words.

3) Housing - While in comparison to other cities, it seems relatively reasonable. Problem has to do again with job availability (and in turn, ones income), and whether you rent or own. Since this is an area of business for me, I would be more than happy to give you something in depth. It's not exactly a Con so much, as a "shop and compare" sort of situation.

4) People - this category could be viewed with any other city attached to it. (-----> "Portlandia".....hehe)

5) Weather - It rains....sometimes a lot.....like right now. :P

So what is the end result. *shrug* The Pro list is longer, but the Con list can determine whether or not you even have the opportunity to enjoy that Pro list. And that is the rub of it. If you do find decent work, and you can get past some of the *meatheads* at city hall *giggle*, then I would say this is a great place to be! I sure as hell would welcome you with open arms. ;) Oh, and one last thing. Since your daughter may be looking for schools, Portland does have a number to choose from. Everything from Universities, colleges, and vocational schools. Quite a variety, but not sure what appeals to her beyond what she was studying (midwifery).

Hope this helps, chica! :)

@Coldi, Portland sounds like heaven compared to where I'm at. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE New Zealand, but the MPs have too much power. They actually plan to turn the entire country smoke free by 2025, but won't touch the issues of rampant alcoholism, drug abuse and child/dometic abuse. It is turning into a nanny state and I have no use or tolerance for that. So I will leave, hopefully more on the sooner side.

Geographically, Portland and Washington are very much like here. It's all green, all year and I could actually live in an arc outside of summer. It doesn't snow in Rotorua, but it does rain.

People...are generally friendly, even when you least expect it. And then there's the gangs who are rather nasty. Sadly, the cops don't generally carry firearms and the gangs do. Oh, and prostitution is decriminalised over here. Brothels everywhere! Don't care myself, but I was rather sad that the male brothel never got started. *waggle eyebrows*

Politics...I generally ignore most politics and flip them off as the need arises.

Jobs are tough over here. Especially when you have snobs like my bosses. :(

Housing is ridiculously expensive.

Taxes..15% across the board for sales tax. Income tax is on a tiered level...10.5, 17.5, 30 and 33% respectively. It's stupid, but here's a link if you're curious. http://www.ird.govt....metaxrates.html

Did I mention it rains here? LOL

I've never seen him around.  Coldi, have you?

My guess is he'd be at Dante's on West Burnside...apparently they have burlesque!

See, at least I'd have some friends in Portland. Everybody I knew here has moved away. :(

@JECW - Very true. So me3 had the first male version. And just because he isn't my taste, doesn't negate him as fulfilling that aspect. Thank you for reminding me. Of course, your flirtations with all but Shiala and Samara, can lead to a fling with the others. Unlike James, where it doesn't go beyond flirtation.

James isn't really my taste either.
I was a little surprised that it doesn't go any further than flirting with James, but bioware thought everyone would want Allers.

Hmmm...well, if your issues with NZ are the "nanny-fying" of the state, then Portland is a bit like that as well.....unfortunately. This city is definately curated by it's local government, that I find frustrating. Now having said that, a lot of cities on the West Coast have become that way. And, the pro's are still nice.
Just wanted to make sure you got the good, the bad and the mind bogglingly weird. XD

Yes, but at least Americans will actually stand up for themselves. Kiwis will not. They just put up with it and that just fries me.

@JECW...LOL on the Allers

LOL Giftfish....Zevran wouldn't be caught dead around our Pearl District...too uptight and cleanPosted Image.  Rog and I have friends that recently moved to the Pearl district.  We couldn't fathom why they did, but that is just personal preferences.  They used to live in a gorgeous house in Ladd's addition built in the late 1800's, and moved to a loft style condo in the Pearl.  Course, it is cheaper for them....their gas bill alone at the house in Ladd's was over $400 a month, during winter.Posted Image

Awwww, gosh, I'm actually feeling the love. :)

I don't know about sending me anything physically (unless it's bleu cheese salad dressing) but maybe a list of links would be good. And a rundown of areas. I was looking at the Clakamas area because the university had some kickin' jobs. Ya'll have a lot of colleges btw. According to one website, *all* the areas in Portland are good. I find that hard to believe.

I will send you some stuff (via email...*grin*). Clackamas is not "bad", but there are some less than pretty aspects about it. Just like in any neighborhood you can find good points and bad points. My biggest complaint about Clackamas (and the Beaverton/Aloha/Hillsboro area would also fall into this), is that it becomes more "suburban" less city. The downside to suburban living is that things are much more spread out. You often have to drive a car even just to pick up some milk. I grew up out in the country (which by the way, is no longer country but suburban now...in fact they just demo'ed my childhood home last year...XD ), so I was used to having to drive everywhere for goods/services. But I started city living by the time I was 19, and damn, I just can't go back. heh! I still drive places (have to for work quite often), but being able to walk/ride my bike to the bank, the store, the post office......very pleasant! ;)

So the upside to suburban living is a good one: cheaper living expenses (generally). Housing, whether buying or renting, is often quite a bit cheaper. Now I have no doubt that you are more than familiar with the suburbs (it's not as if NZ doesn't have them, I'm sure, and you originally came from the US, so there is that too). I have been spoiled for nearly 25 years by city living, so take what I say with a grain of salt...LOL. :)

Where are all the Irish men? I'll move there. :)

I understand what you mean about city living. I'm to the point where the former 15 minute drive to the grocery store where I pay ($10 for a 2 lb block of cheese) is way too much. I'm also assuming Briana wants some city living. Having said that, we've been here since she was 12. By 14, she was on the bus and in town by herself without nary a care in the world, and I didn't worry about her. So it may be more of an adjustment for her, which is why I would lean more towards the burbs. IDK, it all depends on her at this point anyways. I want to leave, but I won't move against her wishes again. And she's still not able to stand on her own yet. *le sigh*

It's been forever since I've been here. I was shocked to see ME3's romance sub-forum locked down. Glad I saw the message at the SaveThane group notifying that everyone had moved the discussion here.

It seems so suspicious to me. Arguements/complaints/sniping are not only limited to that subforum. They happen all over the board! Why single out ME3's romance forum? I think the real reason they did is probably because they know a lot of people are unhappy and they want to stop the complaints and make it more difficult for people to organize their projects. It reminds me of how they wouldn't accept any questions about Thane at ComicCon. It's like they hope if they sweep it under the rug everyone will forget about it. I wonder if the old forum will ever be reopened and if it is, I wonder how many of the old fans will return? It seems like another alienating move by BioWare.

I heard about the Omega DLC being released and supposedly they do have plans to make more. Not really interested in it. Anyone else think it'd be plain weird to return to Omega without Thane? Omega is tied up with ME2 in my mind and I took Thane everywhere I could in that game. I'd hate to go back there without him. :(

@mnomaha - Come on down!! (or up, as it were...heh!) I am sick right now, and when I haven't been sleeping, I have been playing Dragon's Dogma. I suck at it...HA! But I am strangely addicted to it, and the male PC I made is quite luscious. :) You also get to make a follower (cute little female elf mage) and recruit two more.

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well, Cold. I hope you feel better soon.

Dragon's Dogma is an excellent game. I've been playing it as well and the reason I picked it up is because people here recommended it (thanks wildannie!!) I have put ungodly hours into it and still have yet to finish my first playthrough. I find the combat so fun (Mystic Knight, ftw!)and I really like the pawn system as well. The storyline is a bit threadbare but what little there is I found interesting. How far along are you? Beware the affinity system. lol I don't want to spoil anything but people have been scarred for life by DD's romance/affinity system. :P

It will be weird going to Omega without Thane. I also took him everywhere in ME2. It will be strange going without anyone from ME2. I am not really interested in buying it at this point anyway.

@Julia - JULIA!! Hey lady...how you been? I have missed your very eloquent rants. I am only level 23 right now, in DD (Magick Archer) and my pawn is a mage (just about to promote her to Sorcerer). I really do stink at the game, but I still enjoy it. Go figure. XD If you have any tips or tricks to "not sucking", please feel free to school me. hehe! And, if you ever want to try out my Pawn, let me know. Course, we are not that high level wise, so you may not be interested on actually fighting with her. Though, I think I have done a better job building her, than I have my own PC. You could just take her around town, for fun....a show, maybe drinks or dinner. *gafaw!* Welcome back, chica!

@JECW - I hear you on Omega, but the likelyhood of even visiting that station outside of ME2 is pretty slim for me. Kind of sad. *sigh*

I had the pleasure of visiting Portland twice, once for vacation and once for work. I loved the city and the area. The rose garden was gorgeous, and the scenery is so pretty (coming from someone who lived in Illinois and the Gulf coast - flat and boring). I loved seeing the Columbia river, Multnomah Falls, and the forest driving east into the mountains, and then the way the forest just -ends- on the plain. Very strange to me. The only thing that I think would discourage me is the high percentage of rainy days. I like them, but after 2 rainy days, I want my sunshine.
