I had no problems making up my own "ending" since... we were never really shown what happens with Shepard. So it's easy for me to assume she lived, found Garrus and lived on, doing what they do best.
But I'm really struggling with making up a different story in my head when I saw something canon actually happening in game. It's like if I see it, it can't be erased pfft.
I had the same problem before figuring if I can do a better job of making things make sense than the actual game can, why not? I killed off Kai Leng on Thessia in my fixfic, and it sort of snowballed from there. TBH I think it works better than the in-game plot. I don't remember where I read it, but I've heard that fanfiction is just society's way of reclaiming stories. And I think it's especially cogent in something like ME3 where a lot of people WERE dissatisfied with the story as presented.
And I think there's still a lot to look forward to and enjoy when it comes to games in general. Just because Mass Effect 3 was subpar doesn't mean every triple-A title will be.

I've never read the novels so everything I know about Kai Leng I learned from ME3 and this.
That IMO was the biggest problem with the novel cameos in ME3. Kahlee Sanders was ok, but she didn't really play much of a role in ME3 either. Kai Leng, on the other hand, just pops up out of nowhere. David Gaider addressed the role of supplementary material in the DA series on the Inquisition forums--it's there to provide more information and story for the game world, but it is by no means necessary to understand and appreciate the games. I wish ME3 had taken that approach too.

@coldi - interesting read... though I wouldn't have used the word 'evolution' to describe the LI's in the context of ME3! =P

Anyway I'm reading Hisilome's fanfiction about a Thane who lived. So once that one is done, maybe I'll see a bit differently on it.
By the way, it's Nerana, just had a mod change my name.

sexy and very much alive...I'd be all over that like a trampoline.
I'm so bored. And you know...I do believe my daughter thinks i'm joking. She is acting the same way that she did when I said I wanted to move to NZ. Basically ignoring it like I'm insane and it's going to go away. Little does she know...

For some reason that bit cracked me up. Idiot cousin... the sad part is it doesn't sound too far fetched at all for me. xD

@Coldi - ah, I did notice it wasn't written by you, though I didn't realise it was giftfish (I probably should have). I hope that BW are keeping their eye on that site, I think it's much better to get points across based on facts over there than on here. And, as you said, we've discussed the LI's in the different games on here, but it's nice to have it all put together. Once the next one is done with the ME3 part, it should clearly show BW how it went horribly wrong in ME3. The site is really all very well done and it's a good balance between positive and negative feedback for BW, so hopefully they'll be more likely to pay attentionl!
I know, the different name makes me hard to keep track of; sorry about that. This account is technically my hubby's, which is why I didn't carry the name over :/
To make it even more confusing, I'm "moho" on HTL, lol...

Why didn't femShep get more male flirts?
I remember when ME2 came out a minor quibble regarding femShep's choices was that she had more alien LI choices. While broShep had more humans, their personalities were distinct. Kaidan and Jacob had similar characterization issues, and people wanted smother human male.
But there were no males that flirted with her. Sure she got leered at, but a interest like Giana? Where was the male counterpart for her?
I know I was getting tired of being hit on by asari, even though I liked one of them (Shiala)
So was there another human male you might have wanted Shep to get a flirt by? I can't really think of anyone. Maybe Toombs if you have the Survivor background.

There's an ME3 ending mod with no Catalyst. IMO it's a little too happy since very few people die, but that and bugs aside, it's almost everything I could've wanted in an ending mod.
Forum link with videos
I am so freaking happy right now. I might actually be able to replay this game again. Modders are amazing, and if this is possible with the endings, maybe it's possible to save Thane and fix Jacob.

I just watched it...and well I think it's Great...but of course I'm not gonna be happy with the game period until we get an option to save Thane!
The ending isn't really all that much that is bothering me it's watching Thane die and my shep can't/doesn't do anything about it.
This mod looks Great though and Thanks for telling us Sable! ^^

I know, but we all thought modding the Unreal Engine was going to be downright impossible. The ME3EM and ME3Explorer team proved it wasn't. And it's not all just cinematics--some of the stuff in the ending mod, like the memorial wall scene, is actual in-game footage. This means it might be possible to change actual in-game stuff, maybe eventually at least fix Thane's death.
It's a long shot, but certainly better hope for a fan fix than there was a few months ago.

The only problem with mods, is the voices. Yes, you can make subtitles only and hell that'd still be better than what we got regarding Thane. But man... it's really amazing that people can do this now.
The last bit at the memorial scene must just be a model swapping, like you could do in ME2.

Oh, shiny Thane render! :3
And heh, that's an interesting edit of the AA texture.
Hm..that actually .makes me wanna do a texture edit myself.
re:modding
It is very interesting to say the least, I'm actually surprised that the current tools are capable of making a mod like that.
From what I can gather, he managed to:
A) Completely skip certain cutscenes.
C) Edit one of the nameplates on the memorial wall.
D) Swap the 3d-models in an in-game cutscene.
E) Swapping audio. At least, "music" audio can be swapped.
All five of these methods would be relevant if one would make a Thane-centric mod.
If my understanding of how ME3 works is correct, then one could do the following with the current tools:
A) Remove the Troleng fight. Or alternatively, play Kirrahe's scene instead. Skipping it is probably easier though.
C) Replace Thane's name on the memorial wall. Question is what name to use instead, in the mod's thread Emily Wong was a suggestion.
D) Now this one is relevant but one would need one more thing, I'll cover that below.
E) See below.
Basically, say I want to add Thane in the "reunion scene" that this modder created. I would need Thane's model.
(Now in this case: Thane's bone assignments are closer to the human animation rig than say Garrus, so less chance of clipping)
Problem is, Thane's model is not present within the ending's .pcc files (where the cutscene in question is stored). I would need a way to add Thane's model in that .pcc.
From what I gather, this is not possible yet.
Editing variables (and optimally add new ones) would be very useful and key in the dilemma of either adding/replacing content.
Another point of interest would naturally be to create new cutscenes.
A new in-game rendered cutscene is way too complicated (AFAIK, one would need the actual ME3 cutscene editor), but a streamed pre-rendered one could be feasible in the future.
Using a third-party program to animate the 3d models is possible (That's what I'm trying to learn in 3ds Max atm), "recording" the animation in said 3d party program, then exporting that video to ME3, is a whole 'nother issue though.
Perhaps it *is* possible to export .psk (models) and .psa (animation) files into a .pcc in ME3.
I honestly don't know, I have yet to fiddle around exporting .psk and .psa in 3ds Max.
And that leads us to the second part that makes up a cutscene; Audio.
Suffice to say, one needs to make do with the samples we've got of Thane/Shepard in ME2 & ME3 (unless one could figure out how to use other, external audio samples from Hale/Farley. And in Farley's case, "drellify" them).
Besides the audio samples there's the issue of subtitles, AFAIK these are moddable in ME3; custom localizations have been made for ME3, it is complicated, but possible.
An additional method that could prove valuable in a Thane mod would be adding custom text content (think e-mails to Shepard's terminal, datapad texts etc). Again, replacing current content is possible, but adding is not atm.
*Phew* So er, oops this post was not an update on mum's PT...*Ehem* Since I'm about to play ME2 in a moment, I'll update once we've completed today's missions.

"We don't count success until the ground shakes in response!"
Actually, Farley also voices Adrien Victus in ME3.
Yes, the irony is not lost on me: Adrien loses Tarquin, Kolyat loses Thane. :'(
[Edit] Oh, that was an embarrasing typo...
