I'm just tired of the double standards, how BW likes to talk about how ahead of the times they are in regards to sexism in video games, when they start pandering to the male players with a character that was meant to be for female players in the first place. I'm glad that at least bi and lesbian players get to benefit from it, but saying the effect is anything other than collateral is hard for me to believe. They did that with Thane too, took the character that was targeted to women and turned him into an incredibly cheap pseudo-badass death scene directed at a dudebro audience.

Alright. I just fail to see how talking about "the illusion of choice" in the games and "keeping the narrative" had anything to do with what I was saying. All that would have fixed this was an interrupt where Shepard steps away from Aria. Not saying its not valid but I was confused why it was directed at me.

Why couldn't I flirt with a Batarian? Where are the female ones? How about drells, elcor and volus? That new aviation species? Why can't I head butt a krogan and have him consider it a flirt?
Variety is the spice of life. Just because the asari are sexually liberal species shouldn't prevent us from seeing other species sexualities. Can't I at least listen in on an elcor talking to his mate? Batarian marriage? We still don't know what turian do, do we? I've seen enough of the asari to last me a lifetime.
They are so not ahead of the times for female players. If they were, they wouldn't have waited this long to acknowledge femShep or take away her options.

Then it's my fault I wasn't clear. I was agreeing with you. Things like being able to refuse Aria, being able to save Thane, to romance Jacob successfully...those things all CONTRIBUTE greatly to the illusion of choice even if they're not decisions for the main plot.
For example, a main plot decision like keeping/destroying the Collector base ends up not panning out very differently because BioWare can't muck with the main plot that much. But things like romances and interrupts CAN diverge a lot from game to game, and they form a lot of the roleplaying room for the protagonist. By cutting those out for ME3, BioWare created the disconnect between Shep and player that we were talking about re: Aria's kiss. Hopefully that clarifies what I was trying to say.

*sigh* well now I can't decide between Morrowind and NWN. Both are beyond legendary classics....then again...NWN has Valen *le sigh*. Such a horny little devil...lol...get it...hahahahaha

My vote's for Valen. DAT VOICE. He's still in my top 3 romance ever despite NWN coming out almost a decade ago.

Yeah they can swing both ways, but it seems lazy and pandering to me. Lazy because they can't use one character and call it a day, and pandering because it gives us sexy space babes and/or HLA (Hot lesbian action). Sexy space babes are done to death.
If BioWare was actually going to do a monogendered species and challenge gender roles/stereotypes, a race of truly androgynous asari would've been fascinating.

Dude, I feel ya. You've seen some of my tweets. bioware doesn't just have double standards firel, they have a revolving door of standards. Sadly, they are all male centric, and generally geared towards pre-pubescent males. Or written by them. I can't tell.

Um, if bioware were actually going to do a monogendered species, the shouldn't have such large breasts and other obvious girly bits. Just sayin'...

yeah I love your tweets mnomaha.
On the issue of monogenderism, my sister took a herpetology class a while ago and pointed out that asari should be female. So the whole excuse of Asari not technically having a gender is bull****. Not surprisingly seeing who this is coming from..
Here's a link to the post, a little hard to follow but interesting:

I know. I just wish the asari had been different, actually androgynous (ie; no clear male or female characteristics, or characteristics of both). I probably would've liked them more as a species. Talk about a wasted storytelling opportunity.

Well they were obviously created to fill the hot space babe agenda. But I've always thought the same, if they wanted to create a monogendered species, an actually androgynous one would have been awesome. But they took the easy route. I remember thinking "oooh here are the twi'leks of the ME universe!" when it was actually... worse.Sable Rhapsody wrote...

Exactly.
The Asari have always been a bit of a Joke to me. They have to be the most human looking aliens in the Mass Effect universe.
@Sable
That first picture is a bit sacry. It would have been interesting if Bioware had actualy made the Asari more like that instead of what we got.

(On a side note how awesome is it when a piece of art stimulates you like that?)
(Wait no that was not how I meant it!!!!)
The second just makes me want to throw up. I've seen enough asari on da. In fact if I see one more I'm gonna go on a rampage. I don't know what type yet, it may just be a breathing rampage, but it'll be a rampage.
@firel: Javik is in it. He is.... well... not the best one to begin with but I can kinda get it. Still, it is damn unf.
@mnomaha: Valen? Who is this Valen you talk of? I haven't seen any Valen! Where does he come in to play?
@mnomaha: 19 days.
@Emerald: *SQUIIIIISSSSSHHHH!* I'm glad you're back and feeling better, hon! *hug*
@coldie: I'm glad you're feeling better too now! *hug*
I haven't even seen that kiss on you tube so I'm not going to comment on it. I would like to say that I would have LOVED to have more men flirting with my Shepards. Especially Laura, cause she'd eat it up, and Margaret, before she and Garrus settled down, cause she is a bit of a flirt. Margurite though, no. Not with her history, and especially not after she becomes involved with Thane. She's not that kind of girl.
That said, yeah, it definitely should have had more men flirting. I would definitely have tapped Lorik if I could. Oh, such a gentleman. Hell, even Margurite would have liked to share some non-sexual alone time with him, with plenty of wine and non-serious flirting and bantering back and forth. Donnelly, hmm... maybe Laura.
Hmm. I think I'm getting off topic. Besides, I can't say anything everyone above me hasn't already said. So I'll post a Thane piccie instead.

Nah, just kidding. Here's a real one. I like to imagine he and his Siha are isolated in a desert villa somewhere, and Thane decided to go out hunting for food. *sigh* That man has one hell of a chest. *happy, blissful ogle*

And another. NSFW. Enjoy.

It's a head texture of Selendis, a Protoss executor from Starcraft. The Protoss do have male and female, but both genders are pretty androgynous, with the females a bit less stocky than the males. They're differentiated more by faction than by gender.
For me, the appeal of characters like Garrus, Wrex, Thane, and Legion (especially Legion) was that they were so different, yet so very empathetic and familiar at the same time. An androgynous race that challenged gender ideas while being capable of intimacy and romance would've just been icing on the cake.

Really?? That's like bioware old school RPG, you know...when they actually knew how to make a real game. It is old school, but so classic that you just can't help loving it. A bit like Morrowind in that respect. I love that game so much I just started another playthrough...except on Steam...where it keeps crashing.
I would recommend buying the diamond edition of gog.com. I have NWN 2 but can't stand the perspectives, so haven't gotten very far.
