I think for me ME3 taught me never to get invested in another game like I did with ME. I had never even been invested in a game before ME. If I saw a game I liked sometimes I read reviews, or just see what others who played it said.  Some were good and some weren't, but I wasn't invested in it. I did become invested until ME2. I wasn't invested in ME1 at all.  ME2 and Thane is when I became more invested in these games. Then ME3 came along and let me down. It let a lot of us down.

Good point.  I find it hard not to get invested at all (I am still pretty into Dragon Age, and Skyrim has its hooks firmly in me), but avoiding the depths of ME investment is probably wise.

Whenever something means more to you than just a game series, book, movie, etc. it becomes really crushing when it doesn't deliver.  Harry Potter, for example, was an integral part of my childhood growing up, way more important than a book series.  But Harry Potter (at least for me) always delivered.  ME3 didn't.

Same here, as far as the investment goes. My investment with Mass Effect is along the lines of a good book series, but even more so, because you aren't reading about it -- you are experiencing it through your in-game avatar.

I think BW hit on the magic combination to encourage player emotional investment in ME:  a fully-voiced PC, ability to control the gender/appearance of the PC, ability to play the SAME PC across game installments, and a continuous story across installments.   All of these combine to create an incredible amount of immersion for the player.  Playing Mass Effect is a bit like actually being the character in the book or movie series.

With me, the voiced PC is really what makes the game. I love DA and Skyrim, and I am more emotionally-invested in DA than Skyrim due to the character-centric-ness of it.  However, I am *much* more invested in ME than either one of those, and I really think it has to do with the fact that neither of them have a voiced PC. If I play ME for a few months and then switch over to DA or Skyrim, it's actually quite jarring and much less immersive  -- because my character doesn't speak.

So, if BW doesn't want to deal with grumpy fans, the answer is simple: A- don't do stuff to make them grumpy, B-make the game less immersive by deviating from the formula above.

It is kind of like one of my favourite book series, or it used to be, the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I was hooked on it. Until the last book, when the author completely retconned the lore. I can't even...I can't even think about reading any more of the series. Very sad because it was so very good. :(

That sucks hard.  I don't think I've ever read anything where an author did something like that...well, I guess you could count The Dark Tower series, in a way.  But, when I really grow to love a series of books I almost hate reading the last one, because it's so difficult and sad to have the series  -- the journey -- end.

However.

I've never been disappointed in the contents of a final book as a product -- not the character arcs, plot progression, or how it ended.  I've never felt that it ended in error or that characters were misrepresentations of their former selves. And that includes The Dark Tower -- even with reading the "real" ending that SK even warned the reader about. I was simply sad that the journey was over.

Needless to say, this was not the case with Mass Effect 3.

It's doubly sad because read them on my kindle and loved them so much that I bought the paperbacks.

Sadly, I was disappointed in the contents of this last book. Complete disappointment with the character arcs, the plot progression and how it ended. It has been a disappointing year for me. ME3 just won the prize for most disappointing, pointless and ****tiest piece of **** in existence. :)

Well since Moira gave the courage to post in here, I will. Thanks mnomaha for your comment. I'm glad you liked it. I felt so self conscious when I made that video. For some reason I am way more hy about this video then i was about my dragon age vids. Don't really know where to share these kinds of things in the Mass Effect club so to speak :)

@bananflugan14 Hi, and welcome! I watched your video, and I think it was amazing. :) Can't watch it again though cause it made me so sad lol. I didn't like Thane's death in ME3 at all and I prefer to headcanon that he's alive and with Shepard. Anyway, your vid definitely made Thane more justice than his writer(s) in ME3. :D Let us know if you make more Thane vids!

I really like the voiced PC too, and Hawke was voiced very well in DA2.  There is something special about being able to hear snark, grief, rage, affection, etc. in your PC's voice.  But on the flip side it's also very jarring hearing something wrong (either inappropriate for the character or not what you thought the paraphrase meant) coming out of the character's mouth.  If emotional immersion is a major plus of the voiced PC, a lot of autodialogue basically shoots it in the foot.

I also like the unvoiced PC precisely because I don't run into that pitfall.  Even if I only get 1 or 2 dialogue options (which does happen during exposition dialogues), I can hear it in my head with the correct voice, tone, and intention.

Aw, thank you <3 I put the video together in a 48 spin while being home from work with a very laggy computer <.< So I'm very happy that result was good enough for people and with me being MIA from youtube forever. (Did tons of Dragon age vids before)

I loved Thane and in Mass Effect 3 I was left with a big hole that led my Paragon Shepard to go renegade and destructive and basically had no war assets in the end lol.

Thank you for your comment <3

Do I sound evil if I say thank you for that?

But thank you for your lovely comments and I fear I've missed out on a big community and friendship because I have not been active here.

I could relate to Thane in so many ways. (Spent a year trapped in a hospital almost diagnosed with 'permanent' sickness that changed my life) So with his treatment in the 3rd game I was left with a very hollow chest because I reflected myself in it a lot. My life will never be the same again, and I will spend a lot of time in hospitals. (My liver is basically screwed) So yeh, I was left very sad and emotional that my game slapped that reality back in my face

@bananflugan14 Hi there and welcome,I watched your video and cried...of course. I thought it was Great but sad and I won't be watching it again...ever lol.

I hope all is well for you since you have health problems (I have those myself) and I will be praying for you! :)

Yeah I think Buttware is evil for what they did with Thane...I see no fair treatment at all, buttware is delusional.

LOL No, not evil at all. It was well done!

I would say a some of us have health issues, a few have mental issues and more than a few of us have experience with personal loss. Although I am truly sorry for your health issues I have to say you've definitely come to the right place. We are a rather close knit group. I think you'll fit in well here.

The Cullen fans over in DA are also pretty fantabulous, though I mostly just lurk there, since the thread moves so damn fast.  But we have cookies.  Hallucenigenic cookies of GLORY.
