Absolutely agree with you Dine...too bad buttware doesn't have any writers talented enough to pull this off.

Chapter 7 of "The Phenomenology of Shepard" is now up! This chapter gets into Shepard's head after the hookup with Thane, and Tali's loyalty mission.

Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 7 is rated M for language and sexual references.

@Elana -- Yay, a new chapter!!  Edit -- Doh, doesn't look like it's up yet.  Link is broken and the chapter isn't accessible on your main page.

@DineBoo -- I'm with you. I'm...not black...and I was insulted by the racial implications of Jacob's actions. Sigh.

Guh, I see that too. From the administrative side, everything is set up properly. Maybe FF.net is being slow on the draw; it always gives a warning that it can take up to thirty minutes for new chapters to post, although that's never actually happened before. (Naturally I race over here to promote within thirty seconds of posting it.) Try the AO3 link for now, because I know that one is working, and it's the same content (actually more attractively presented, and has chapter notes that are not included in the FF.net version). I'll keep an eye on the FF.net situation and update when I figure out what's up.

Thanks for catching this! Best reader ever!! :D

EDIT: Looks like this problem is affecting all stories on FF.net that have been updated after about 2am this morning EST, not just mine (scroll down to the most recent comments on their latest blog post). Please use the AO3 link. I'll update when I learn more! Thanks!

@DinoBoo and giftfish:  Please forgive me for I am not very good at explaining my own thoughts.

I know what you (Dino) were saying, and I know you weren’t indicating any connection between personality and race.

What I was trying to do is point out typical stereotypes, but I obviously failed in doing so.

I would continue to speak about this, but I think its best I keep my mouth shut now before I create anymore confusions. lol.

They have plenty good writers, just apparently not anywhere near Thane or Jacob...or Cerberus or Thessia or Earth... :P

I wish Drew Karpyshyn hadn't left.  I wouldn't say he was my favorite writer on the team, but he was a consistently strong and lore-conscious writer.  I'm starting to realize how much I took that for granted.  David Gaider (occasional timeline and math fails aside) delivers that same degree of stability to the DA series, which is probably a lot of why I loved DA2 despite its design flaws.

I agree with you about that Sable. Everyone I knew hated DA2 but i loved it. I may not have loved the new elf design, or the franchised dungeons, or just how much they fuglied up Zevran, but it was consitent with the lore, had an iinteresting story (although different, especially for an rpg) and there were no steaming dog turds because everything was foreshadowed: ie anders, the vicount and arishok, fenris turning on you. granted blowing up the chantry was a bloody shock. I legitimately believed anders when he said he had found a way to separate him and justice/vengence. ME3 however... urghd. Like coldie said: wash, rince, repeat. And I too definitely wih Drew didn't leave. I wish L'Etoile didn't leave. I wish most of the bastards didn't leave. I don't think there were very many ME veteran writers on this game. or at least none who should have been. Except patrick. Mordin was good. He was about the only character who was normal!

Sorry for the double post but just a quick question: does this statement seem fair (for the Loyal character arc)?

"Yet in Mass Effect 3 few of these aspects of Thane's character and Thane's and Shepard's relationship were present, irregardless of the dialogue paths previously chosen. Overall the character appeared more uncaring and self-centered than he previously had during the Paragon path, nor the subtle, almost parental disapproval as with the Renegade path. There was very little evidence of his more romantic nature, nor of his strict moral code or of the nature of his newfound relationship with his son. Despite his continued dignity and spirituality, Thane Krios once again appeared as uncaring, aloof and disinterested as he was after his initial recruitment. "

A little out of context in regards to this section (which had about four written pages before this and a lot more to come after it, but this needs to be addressed before I go too far further.

Also, thanks Beanie! That helped heaps!

Also, does anyone know of a let's play or video that has Thane's dialogue (for a friend) that mentions that he want's Kolyat to have a loving father. All i've found (and I have seriously looked) just says "and my son visits regularly). If that "loving father" line didn't trigger in game it's okay, but if it did it could deal that above statement quite a blow.

LOL, I think I prefer DA2 to DA:O on balance.  I just found it more fun.  That said, it did split the fanbase, and critics of the game are well within their rights to dislike the drastic changes between it and DA:O, not to mention the significant gameplay and level design issues.

ME3 was different.  After the EC and Leviathan opinions are much more mixed, but when the game first hit shelves, there was a pretty consistent outcry of "WTF is this s***?"  And that's not even getting into the problems that aren't ending-related (Thessia, Earth, the ME2 romances, etc.)

It took a long time for me to even remotely like DA2, and all of that was Fenris. I'm not over what they did to my Zevran or SD Gaider's calling us idiots for daring to have an opinion about it. The changes were too drastic IMO. It was not a second game, it was not a worthy sequel. The game on its own is good (not great), but as a follow up to something as epic, and I'm talking length, content, all of it, as DA:O, it was nothing but a huge mistake.

ME3 is just a huge cluster**** of a mess. The little bit that is redeeming, Tuchanka, is not enough to entice me to say I like it. I've said it's better played as a non-import male, and it is (and I love Steve) but I cannot say I actually like the game. Especially when I have to go out of my way to create a new character, gibb the hell out of said character (do we have bools for Miranda's LM?) and then only play as a male.

I just got done watching an old(er) episode of Doctor Who ("The Doctor's Daughter"). Here is an episode with TWO characters that die (ok, one comes back to life, but the protagonist(s) don't know that) - brand new characters never shown before, and the protags are genuinely GRIEVED. Now, I examine me3; all kinds of auto-dialogue and forced (railroaded??) emotions (Child at the beginning, the VS after Dr. Eva curb-stomps them, dreams, Thessia, ect....) yet Thanemancers don't even get the "option" of showing such emotion for the death of their LI of choice. Brilliant! *sarcasm*.Posted ImagePosted Image

Someone from the old (technically newer) character thread, stated (before me3 came out) that their biggest fear about Thane dying was that they would not even come CLOSE to giving justice to Thanemancers for said forced death. Meaning, bw would write it without true empathy and choice of grief/emotional response. And they were right. (I think it might have been wildannie, but unsure....been awhile. *wink*) This is the problem that most Thanemancers have (and probably foresaw) with Thane's death in me3.

Now...having said that, I would still argue that most still wanted/hoped/wished/even believed, for some avenue of him surviving till the end of the series. What happens after said trilogy then is....left to our own imagination. This is the problem I have with all this "Speculation" , personal "headcanon" talk. For Thanemancers, we have to go completely AU to make it work. We can't speculate that anything nice, good, happy, hopeful.....whatever feckin' adjective you wish to use....happened to the character WE cared most about. This is....in Thane's and Mordin's words....."problematic". Posted Image Peace out, Drellickers!!!!!

.....and yes! I am having one of THOSE nights! Booya MF's!!!!

@Coli I read the "salvation" in Harbingers voice. "We are your salvation" Ahhhhhhhhhh lots of talk about fanfic in here sh!t man this is what the Samara thread used to look like then everyone went poof and I had nobody around popping in saying "new chapter" which really used to kick my @ss into writing gear. OK I think I'm gonna be staying here now.

@Myth that statement sounds good though for me in ME3 Thane's spirtial side seemed to be replaced by the 'I'm dying. It's OK. Now leave my the f*ck alone. I don't care about much except I'm dying. Oh and Kolyat visits regularly and I still enjoy exercising but don't need to because I'm dying." All of which he said but with his unique sophisticated way of putting things.

In fact I think this right here "I'm dying. It's OK. Now leave my the f*ck alone. I don't care about much except I'm dying. Oh and Kolyat visits regularly and I still enjoy exercising but don't need to because I'm dying." sums up the one conversation at the hospital perfectly. Then he because a bit more like Thane during the Citadel coup but just didn't care about Kolyat. If Kolyat was already seen to I could see Thane aiding Shepard that way but I have doubts that Kolyat would let his dad run off to save the day alone in that condition.

This is why I have trouble writing Thane in fanfiction.  I can do snarky Garrus and goofy Vega and even Saren, but Thane eludes me.

Clearly he eludes other writers too if ME3 is any indication :P

WTF Mass Effect Risk? What the sh!t?!!  Buttware looking to recover losses on ME3? Goodluck douchebags maybe if ME3 had been what you'd been lead us to believe it would be you could have sold that stupid board game.

Aslo Thane is fairly easy to write but then again I had to master the art of writing for Samara who speaks just as sophisticated and who's far more harder to write as she is a very private person with her personal life where as Thane is more open with about anything.

Samara has all these deep factors because her history is so expansive and deep and never touched on. Once I masted writing for Samara (still agonize over it because I don't want mess the tinist thing up) Thane comes fairly easy to me.

They both share a unique and sophistacted way of putting things and use as few words as possible but make it sound so dang amazing and cool.

@Mnomha it's sad when one can sum up a character like Thane in a stupid simpe lame few sentinces of pure sh!ttyness. He went from being this cool character where ya just wanted to hang out with him all the time and get to know him and as much about him as you and he had some of the most interesting lore attached to him and his back story along with Wrex's is my favorite. (Samara probably I'm certain has a cool one but when know diddly squat about it).. Plus Thane llet us know more about the hanar he was really cool.

then ME3 "F*ck you leave me alone I'm dying" it's sad even some of those dA valentines cards that are going around use the I'm dying thing and it just ruins it for me because it was like all he became in ME3. "I'm dying F*ck you. I can't because I'm dying. Did I mention I'm Dying?"

Risk was one of my first board games, and I have an immense soft spot for it even if its mechanics are vexsome.  If they actually create interesting mechanics for it that are different from normal Risk (ie: Risk Legacy), I might get it.

I honestly have never played Risk odd because growing up as a kid we had it .. or I think it was risk.

On a side note relates to how BW had their characters acting out of character so much in ME3, that Omega scene with Aria kissing Shep. I was thinking Buttware should have had Aria kiss Shep before the mission regaurdless of gender or allinement. That way it's more like  Aria playing them angles. Plus if you've got an LI onboard (Garrus, Liara, Ash, Kaidan, Tali, Samantha, Steve,) it could add unique dialogue.  And it feels so much more in character for Aria, maybe even give her a fancy line like "Play your crads right and there could be more ..." Then at the end of the mission a dialogue option allows for a quickie provided you sided with Aria enough.

Because that kiss scene with Aria distubes me greatly it's so ooc. I like the above way and it gives those fans that wanted her as an LI a quick fling because we know Aria's true love is really Power and Omega.
