One of the biggest downsides to this DLC, is that there are those that feel justified in causing trouble with people who still have a problem with Thane's handling in me3. Because the DLC does include Thane specific content, this proves we weren't "forgotten" (though I would certainly argue it is NOT exactly character content, since his "character" is dead..all the other characters - minus Jacob I would suggest - get new character "growth" content, whether through talking and learning more about them, or through more romance content).
It is interesting to me though, that this content is somehow placed above what the vanilla game gave us. I'll explain: The fandom wasn't happy with the content in the base game. Between NO romance arc, and a one-size-fits-all (supposedly) character with no real exposition except "I'm dying", and the god awful construct that was the KL encounter, there are more than enough reasons to not like how he was portrayed in the final game.
Then along comes this DLC...DLC by its very nature being completely "optional". The content in said DLC proceeds to address ONE of the complaints by Thane fans (no recognition of his character after his fated death). Then the romance specific content (which is still limiting, and non-interactive since, ya know...he's corpsified), goes about "rationalizing" the terrible romance content in the base game, while still not rectifying the actual romance.
So now we get back to the idea of "optional" and "base game". Take the anti-enders as an example. Those that did not feel satisfied or mollified by the EC, often state that it is because the endings are still the same....just with some "clarification" and an evac scene, which to many of them, doesn't make sense. The DLC doesn't add options to Thane fans, it instead cements the content given in the base game while trying to explain the reasons behind it. I personally despised what was in the base game, so to make that even more concrete (and for an extra $15 to boot) seems ludicrous to me....hence I won't buy it.
Now before anyone gets offended by what I am saying, please note....NO ONE should feel bad about enjoying something they bought. So if you have bought the DLC, and are getting your monies worth; good! You should. It doesn't mean you have to like everything that is IN the DLC. And I have no doubt that you can at least understand why some wouldn't be willing to buy this DLC because of reasons.
The concept of "optional" makes all of this even more difficult for me to swallow. Consider this for a moment: we have a number of conflicting statements made across the BSN amongst members and devs alike. And even across different games (say ME AND DA, for example). These statements go to what is considered canon, lore. How do we handle DLC? Some argue that because it is optional, it can't exactly be considered canon...perhaps lore specific at best, but not canon. Others point out moments in the writing that DOES make it canon. Take for example; Liara will ALWAYS be the Shadowbroker, the events in general for Arrival always happen, Anders will always have met Justice, ect ect....But, there are some that are also quick to point out, that canon doesn't necessarily mean that it was canon in your play through (example here would be the Dark Ritual in DAO; it's available to everyone, but the events do not happen, unless you choose it, so Morrigan running around with an old god baby is not set in stone). So how does all of this apply....how does this matter? Well, it starts to sound like a "picking and choosing" as someone else sees fit (whether the actual developers themselves, or those that just wish to push other peoples buttons). Think about how often people dismiss what we clinged to from ME2; the lung transplant. This was not brought up in the vanilla game, but if you purchase the LotSB DLC, play it, romance Thane, and return to Haaglaraz (or however you feckin spell it), you can read the medical report about him being eligible for a transplant. And due to when you can access that info, and the wording in the file itself, it is clear that this report was done shortly after Thane comes aboard the Normandy...meaning, before he is romanced and/or friended (loyal). We also can access after the romance is completed, his letter. This very letter was, in a sense, turned CANON because they recycled it in me3!
So, we apparently can't pick an choose what makes sense to us, what lore and story and character arc is available to us, but others can. I have no control over what others will do, but their weight is worth very little, when I start to examine things as I just did. This DLC for me, will never be viewed in a pleasant light, and that is a shame. I would have loved nothing more than to enjoy my final ride in the ME universe, but alas, I can not.
Sorry if it sounds like I am repeating myself (a LOT lately...LOL), but these buttons continue to be pressed. Call it a "reaction", if you will. And apparently my need to still "muse"....heh! XD
