Buggirl70, lmao, that will NOT go over well with some people! I think it would be awesome if Thane is going through some successful cure treatments, and we get Kolyat of Feron as the alternative drell squadmate. In the case of Kolyat, certainly not an li. For one, he's too young, also, Shep switching from the father so the son romantically kinda gives me the creeps. Ugh.

I actually love the idea of Feron's recruitment being a rescue/Sb takedown with Liara in ME3.

However, since this is the THane thread . . .

Its Kolyat, the first time you see him in Thane's loyalty mission.  He's about to go after Talid, and probably realizing he doesn't have his daddy's skills.

That is Kolyat!  Master of the epic /facepalm and "you're not my MOOOOOOOOM!"!  Posted Image

I've always thought drell skin was lizard / snake like, supple and smooth, but textured.  As for moulting, that would be interesting, definitely wouldn't be one of Thane's best looking days.  Then again, toss the jacket on and he'd look good any time, anywhere.

I'm very very guilty of plowing through to Ilium and snagging Thane at which point he becomes my shadow, my permanent party member.  I find his survivability is quite high, as long as he stays out of the fray, which he should (grumbles about the AI).  He works very well in tandem with an adept, on my engineer I tend to go with Thane / Garrus, Thane / Miranda and Thane / Samara.  With my sentinel Thane / Jack was a fun combo.  All that aside, it's awfully sexy to think about Thane, backing Shepard up, staying out of the action but keeping an eye on everything through the scope, sniping targets right over Shepard's shoulder before she can even see them.

Nothing says, "I like you, you're pretty neat" like a dead merc with his neck snapped dropped on you.  And nothing says, "I love you" like a husk with a sniper rifle hole through his head shot from a mile away.  Posted Image

OK... Some might like him, Kolyat, because, as we know, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I find him... hmm... ugly.

As for his presumed skills... kaimanaMM summed it perfectly:

Kolyat: Is somewhere out there with a C-Sec mop and bucket cleaning out
the krogan section of the bathrooms on the Citadel.  He says things
like, 'My dad wasn't there for me!' and 'I'm going to blog about this!'
or 'Shepard sux!'.

I really can't see where all this is coming from and honestly I've started to kinda hate him for this.

Speaking of killing machines, I'm sure a lot of Thane fans take him to every mission with them (I know I do - if my videos are not proof enough). What do you guys think about him as a squad mate? Do you think he stands out on the battlefield compared to other mates? Does any one of them stand out for that matter? What about his survivability? Be honest :) I'll try to sum up my thoughts about it later.

I like Thane as a squadmate, as I'm sure most do. He's a well balanced character in terms of combat, and since I don't play biotic classes, I think it's great that he has those skills. The only skill I don't find particularly useful is his loyalty power.

But honestly, his AI leaves a lot to be desired, though that goes for everyone. The first time I brought him along he was behaving like a zerking Krogan (with a sniper rifle I might add), and let's just say he doesn't really have the hp to back it up. He does die alot.

But what's odd is I had Jack with me a lot in the beginning and she was even crazier but she never died.

On the topic of Thane's usefulness in the squad, I have always thought he was useful.  I typically bring Thane in combination wtih Samara, Miranda, Garrus, or Grunt.  I will admit that I don't carefully contrast the different teammates; for the most part, I just take pick ones I like to go with me, based upon the enemy defense for the mission (shield/barrier/armor...).  But in defense of my lazy approach, I took him on almost every mission (after I recruited him) in my insanity run, and I still thought he was great.  He may not be able to take quite as much damage as Grunt or even Garrus, but once I learned to properly assign him cover, I didn't have much trouble keeping him alive at all.  His warp is useful in almost every situation.  I love throw when I can use it to shove an enemy off a platform, etc.  Shredder ammo is pretty lame, I'll admit.  Nonetheless, he can really pack a puch with that sniper rifle.

I really just loved when I'd whittle off some merc's shields and then see the *POW* of his sniper rifle shot blast through their head.  What is that phrase, Garrus?  Oh, right - SCOPED AND DROPPED.  B)  Speaking of that - after several play-throughs, I still don't find Thane's combat exclamations at all annoying.  I find Miranda the worst in that regard.  She drives me crazy with her phrases, for some reason.  I don't even dislike her normally, but when she's shouting in my ear during battle, I want to turn around and shoot her.

I take him everywhere and I didn't see any differences between him and the others. Horizon gives me problems, but I didn't try to take him there. Most of the time I play on normal so I don't have to care about strategy and I never tried insanity.

2 insanity runs and 3 non-insanity. I bring Thane/Garrus with me on missions where there'll be shielding, and Thane/Samara when there'll be guys with armor and biotics (Collectors/husks). His Warp+Throw combo are STILL useful even as an adept, and he does massive damage with his sniper rifle, and pretty decent with the tempest/carnifax.

He requires a bit more TLC because you have to make sure he's stationed well, but his AI tends to be better then Garrus or Miranda, who both die pretty much constantly, even when you position them.

His bonus power, unfortunately, is pretty much useless in most cases. He should have had some sort of melee attack, or cloaking instead :/ I wish I could yank that point out of shredder ammo, and use it plus my THREE others to fully upgrade one of the other power :(

Oh and no Kolyat please.  I'm sure he's a nice kid, but he's a kid....no way a kid can match the galaxy's best assasin, who's been training for longer then the kid has been alive.  It's not in the genes, it's in the training!

I agree with you. That chin obviously does him no credit, but there's something else unattractive as well.

I'm not a fan of Kolyat at all to be honest. Let me put it this way; if there's one thing I don't like about Thane, it would be Kolyat. The loyalty mission is awesome though.

This and this.

I had to reload so many times through Purgatory with my engineer / Garrus / Miranda on insanity because Miranda just would not stay in cover.  She'd die, then Garrus would be all like, "I GOT THIS SHEPARD!" then he'd die, and I'd get flanked, wildly fire off my combat drone and then I'd die.  It wasn't pretty.

His bonus power is alright.  Cloak or some kind of epic headshot (that tied into Drell Marksman) or even a melee talent (like Flicker in DA:A) would have been different and interesting.  What bothers me is that he'll constantly turn it on despite any kind of squad ammo power you have turned on.

Slightly off topic a bit but,

What age do you guys think Kolyat is roughly?

Like if you take it, Thane is 39 (check the wiki) and he left Kolyat and Irikah 10 years before that so he was 29 then.

I'd say Kolyat was around 6 or 7 when Thane left, so that leaves him around the 16-17 age mark in ME2, which IMO is far too young to be following Shepard into battle against the reapers.

Wow, I need a hobby. If my memory has served me, and I remembered the basics of Kepral's correctly....I now have a detailed possible description of the origins of, causes for the delay in curing, and theoretical future treatments for Kepral's Syndrome. I put this mental image of the disease together as kind of a 'here's an excuse to research random bits of biology' but now I'm kind of proud of it. If anyone is curious about my theories (psst, Bioware! if you hadn't come up with a cure yet, look over here) I'll put it all together and post it.

Shavon, that pic with Thane and your Shep in bed... my game never allows me to call LI to my room. I'm not sure if I should be grateful or annoyed though. The music there makes me nervous and the animations too. Still, I'd like to have the option.

After the Collector mission, if your li is still alive (hopefully!), talk to them first, get their commentary on the suicide mission, then head straight up to Shep's quarters.  The terminal will have "Call, Thane" or whoever you are romancing, and they will appear sitting on your couch.  Have you tried that?

It's the special booty call terminal. But the images you get when you call your lover up are pretty creepy. And girl or guy, I'm pretty sure they sit on the couch the same way.

The couch relaxing images are creepier than the bed relaxing ones I think, regardless of your Shep and his/her LI they just look so weird relaxing on the couch.

As for Thane in combat, I used him quite a bit. For the entire endgame battle sequence, I used Thane and Mordin. Mordin is so useful! BUUUURRRRNNNN.

I did take Thane and Samara once into combat, and I thought it was funny how they were both blessing the dead after every kill. I tend to ignore the in battle shouts, since most of the time, I can't hear them. I love Mordin's though. "Flammable! Or Inflammable. Can't remember which. Doesn't matter."

As requested.
WARNING - is loooooooong-

Okay, here’s my take on Kepral’s. May be adjusted as I’m corrected by people smarted than me/get missed info pointed out to me. (Any microbiology majors out there, feel free to help me out, my degree is in business)
As of ME2, as far as we know Kepral’s is a bacterial infection that cause’s the tissue of Drell lungs to lose the ability to function in high humidity environments (they can no longer absorb oxygen).
When the effects were first realized antibiotic treatments were used to combat the effect, but quickly loosed effectiveness and other treatments such as lung transplants have so far been unsuccessful and the disease eventually spreads to other organs.

So why have efforts been so unsuccessful? Because it’s the symptom that’s been treated, not the origin.
Starting at the beginning – The Drell are busily Industrial Revolutionizing the **** out of their planet, so in swoops the Hanar to rescue them. But they don’t just rescue the Drell, they also rescue Cannotus Thinkus Ofnameus, the tiny bacteria that had evolved symbiotically in the lungs of the Drell, aiding in the regulation of blood oxygenation. See where I’m going with this yet?

So the Hanar, rather than say, “Here’s a few bucks for a hotel,” are their typical nice selves and say, “Come stay at my place!” So the Drell go  from their nice, arid planet, and are introduced for the first time to a predominantly marine ecosystem. Only, whoops, looks like a huge aspect of marine ecology is the presence of bacteriophages.   Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria, eventually causing the infected bacteria to burst and release compounds that stimulate the growth of more bacteria for the virus to feast on (according to Wikipedia), and the ocean is full of them. Seriously.

Viruses are the most abundant biological entity in aquatic environments[65]—there are about one million of them in a teaspoon of seawater [66]—and they are essential to the regulation of sal****er and freshwater ecosystems. [67] Most of these viruses are bacteriophages…” (http://en.wikipedia....tion_to_viruses)

So, say you’re a Hanar doctor and your buddy Kepral starts coughing like a 80 year-old smoker. You take a look at his lungs and think, “Wow! Look at all that bacteria growth! That must be causing the problem.” You give him antibiotics to cut down on the bacteria, but the virus that you don’t know about just keeps chugging away and eventually the bacterium becomes resistant and you’re right back where you started. And that gene therapy that’s not really working? It turns out that the primary way bacteria protects itself from bacteriophages is by destroying any foreign DNA introduced to its system, like the DNA that bacteriophages uses to infect the bacteria…or like the DNA from the viruses used in gene therapy.

So the solution to Kepral’s (assuming that any of this is right) is actually pretty simple. Stop looking at antibiotics and start looking at antivirals that could treat the actual root of the problem.
Anyway, that’s just my opinion, no need to spread it around.

@dunefarble: Wow, that is a very well thought out solution. That the Illuminated Primacy has it all wrong and are treating a bacterial infection instead of a root viral infection. That would explain why the other organs degenerate too. Very interesting.
