I just played the Collector base and Thane said:”I made a life of killing those who deserve to die....”
You can put those rosy glasses back on. :D

You know, I really do like Thane, but if I had to view him as an altruistic force of good all his life, that opinion of him will drop dramatically. :P

So I'm not going to interpret his statement as him saying he truly spent his entire life doing such work so much as that's what his life was about when you meet him. Nor will I think the only people he ever killed deserved to die.

I'm not sure if his Assassin Trailer can be viewed as a canon interpretation of his character (particularly since I think the Blur guys went too amphibian with his features rather than reptilian), but it does sum up what I feel his character truly is. Or at least what it was before he started down the road of penance.

Assassins might be good people, but that does not translate to them doing good things. Maybe sometimes the deed led to better things, but a lot of times assassination is about someone else's gain by orchestrating someone else's death.

So that's just the way I'm going to view Thane. That's the way I view assassins. Again, like I said, I still like Thane. While I can see how viewing him as only that force of good would make it easier for some to like him, I prefer the dark undertone.

If I remember correctly, Thane started killing bad guys on his own AFTER his wife had been murdered and/or he's been diagnostic the Kepral syndrome (whatever it is called). When thinking back to the people he's assassined for the hanars, he feels like it was the guys who payed him who did the killing instead of him.

I like Thane as well, but I'm not sure about his philosophy regarding his killings. That said, I am glad that he feels some sort of remorse or emotion regarding his victims.

At this stage in his life, I wonder if he can really separate mind and body from what he does. He's not doing contract killings any more. He doesn't seem too bothered by the change in dynamic, though.

So I think I agree with what I know Collider has already mentioned before. While there could actually be some semblance of the separation of mind and body in drell belief (possibly tied to drell religion), the hanar took advantage of this belief and magnified it for their own purposes.

Thane does make reference to it outside of the context of his work when he talks about Kolyat being disconnected. In that case, it was not so much a conscious decision on Kolyat's part so much as exterior circumstances acting on his psyche. I also wonder if the effect is similar to the way people describe an out of body experience, when you can see your body working from a third person perspective, but are unable to really control it.

Any chance you guys can get me some good Thane-FemShep love art, like the pictures used in the Kaidan thread for instance? I've been looking but I'm surprised I haven't found anything yet.

This is probably the best Thane picture out there: Thane looks warm.http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=thane&order=9&offset=72#/d2opwvk

Thanks, but I wasn't asking for that kind of picture. I want Thane-FemShep love art, meaning love pictures featuring Thane and FemShep. Take a look at the other character threads and you'll see what I mean.

Ah, together! I didn't catch that (obviously). I know there are a few on DA but I didn't see any really great ones at a glance. A lot of folks have trouble with Thane's face.

This one is really good, my personal fave.

The problem with Thane is that he's incredibly hard to draw. His face in fanart rarely looks "right"

Not bad. I'd muchly prefer pictures along these lines, for example:

There is a surprising lack of Thane/Shepard artwork to be found out there. This must be rectified. By people who have art skills, not me. Well, maybe I can see if I can capture the essence of Thane in stick figure form.

Indeed, especially seeing as how he's such a great love interest. In fact, I think he's the best possible romance option for a female Shepard  (that includes the ME1 love interests).

People who've played KOTOR like to mention how Thane is a replay of the Carth romance, but it is only superficially. The only connection is they both happen to have dead wives and their sons have become disconnected as a fallout of that. But the personalities are drastically different. The Carth romance was about trust and had a great deal of humor behind it. Thane's romance is about being alive and has a great deal of spirituality to it.

There do seem to be at least a few people who don't want the whole dead wife/sister/girlfriend/family & estranged son thing to repeat. I don't particularly care myself but there is a group against the whole "Carth syndrome," thing.

Bioware does have a tendency to recycle plotlines and even the game progression somewhat. But then, pretty much every plotline can be reduced to man vs. nature, man vs. man, man vs. himself... The depth isn't in the outline but in the details.... I wonder if people would have been so quick to dismiss Thane's story if the disconnected individual turned out to be a daughter or a younger brother -- just not a son like Carth had.

I agree, Thane and Carth have both dead wives and sons who're giving into the dark side, but that's the onlyt thing they have in common - and that's a good thing imho ;-)

After catching up with what's going on here:

- I never played KOTOR (I or II), but I probably should. Sounds like a very good game and this Carth is quite a character, I mean, first Kaidan and now Thane, and both are compared to him.

- It could be that he is difficult to draw and photo-manipulation isn't easy either, I don't know, but I agree, I wish there was more fan art.

@Pacifien for the question posted a page back about Shepard and Thane visiting Earth: I don't have a Shepard that is from Earth, so I guess the experience of visiting the planet would be as new to her as it would be to Thane. By the time they get to travel for fun I presume that Thane is already cured, so the location would not matter from that perspective. Anyway, they would visit Fraser Island, in Australia, described as the "largest sandpit in the world".

I have soooo much catching up to do!  (Moving sucks, btw!)

A few Thane and Shepard pics I have (none of these wonderful works are mine, all credit goes to the super awesomely talented artists) :

They Became Space

(I cannot for the life of me remember the artist who drew this, if you're out there or someone knows who it is, let me know!)

Thane And Shepard by Channet
Posted Image
(This is one of my most favorite Thane and Shepard pictures.)

Posted Image
(How'd THAT get in there?!  :innocent:)

"Argh" by Deepdive
Posted Image
(The "argh" because if I remember right she was having trouble with inspiration / coloring.)

A couple of thoughts off the top of my head having read through a few posts, I promise I'll read through them when I have time later :

1.  Thane and Carth are so beyond different that it always irks  me when people immediately write Thane off due to 'Carth Syndrome'.  Yes, Thane has a son and Carth has a son.  Yes, they both tried to be a 'good' father to their respective offspring and slipped up on the job, but there is where the similarities come to an end.  Carth's story is worlds different than Thane's and the two are completely different philosophically and personality wise.  Their romances are night and day different.

2.  The dark undertone is what I love the most about Thane.  That cold-blooded killer who is good at what he does and he knows it.  He's not arrogant, he doesn't posture.  Thane is matter-of-fact about what he does and why and never apologizes for it, nor should he.  If he did, I probably wouldn't love his character half as much as I do.

Reminds me of Bailey's comment when you ask him a second time why he's helping Thane. "You ever think he's the only man to ruin a relationship with his son" or something like that. Think it's just one of those unspoken fears that men have when they have a son, wondering if they'll really be able to be a good father to him.
