When I recruit Professor Mordin Solus (i.e. after releasing the cure into the air supply) I am awarded an undeserved +5 Renegade penalty in addition to a thoroughly deserved +9 Paragon reward. When I googled this issue (since Social has no search feature again) I discovered I was not the only one to have noticed this.

It doesn't appear to be that converation itself: there is an autosave immediately prior to the conversation so I've rerun it a few times. There are only two player nodes in that conversation with two options apiece.  The first gives +2 Paragon or nothing  and the second gives nothing or +2 Renegade.  There are no interrupts.  Through the converation I can manipulate the total award from +9 to +7 Paragon and/or from +5 to +7 Renegade but I cannot avoid the base +5 Renegade.

Similarly the two previous conversations (i.e. the one with the Batarians/Daniel and the one with the Vorcha) each gave me +2 Paragon so I assume that none of my prior actions could have earned this (or I would have had the penalty already).

I can understand the Paragon reward as I've just save the district from
suffocating and assisted the good doctor distribute his cure however
what is the Renegade penalty for?  If this is a bug is there a work-around for it?  If it is not a bug is it avoidable (and what causes it so I know how far to rewind)?  If it is not avoidable is it a unique event or are there other arbitary and/or unavoidable Renegade penalties (as I may have to start over with a new character concept)?

I found a couple of other threads on the same topic (listed below) although they don't offer any real insight:
