taking it back in the morning for a refund....wasted 8 hours today fighting with this..ridiculous...epic fail tbh.

This worked for me:
1. uninstall
2. run msconfig --> boot tab ---> advanced --> set the correct number of processors
3. if you have 2 dvd drives put disc 1 in the first and disc 2 in the second
4. open the DVD in explorer and run setup.exe (not the autorun launcher) as an administrator (right-click...run as administrator)
5. reinstall
6. run the game as an administrator after your reinstall is complete
Not sure if that will solve your issues, but it solved the same issue for me.
