Actually I don't think the Tau even existed then.Blizzard had a deal with games-workshop (owner of the warhammer franchises) and was gonna develope games based on the warhammer world. Games-workshop pulled out, but the warhammer influences still remain. I bet you Games-workshop is still kicking themselves over that stupid stupid move. Lol, WoW very well may have stood for World of Warhammer had things played out diffrentlySinHound wrote...
P.S. You best not be talkin' bout the Tau when you say Starcraft stole from 40k.

oh gawd that looks cheesy
Farscape ranges from just being fun and overly cheesy, to being on an acid trip, to being dark and depressing, to being off the f*in wall, and to being non-stop action. It hits pretty much every emotion button you have.

Yeah, the Tau didn't come for another two years or so. There are definitely "unexplainable" "similarities" with the rest, though. Also - you mean Blizzard.
Thanks for the save

WTF does starcraft have to do with anything. Play the star control series if you want to see interesting parralels with mass effect, instead of watching some low budget star trek wanna be series that was only good for a proxy to porn mag.
Wow, I thought after you didn't read the first post you would be smart enough to avoid the same mistake a 2nd time. i was wrong. And apparently you've never watched the show cause an average farscape episode prob cost twice the amount of whatever Star Trek show was being made at the same time. And a porn mag? Seriously. Maybe once a season you see a hot chick's crack... but thats it. If your gonna bash something at least make sure you cover your bases so you don't look like a child.

Farscape did things with scifi and character interaction that Star Trek can only dream of (and I'm a trekkie as well). The budget was phenominal, the animatronics and puppetry were of the higest grade, and some of the Henson's studio's best work. Stop hating.

Farscape is an amazing show, but Mass Effect's universe feels much closer to the one in Babylon 5.
That is one show I've never watched although I've heard really really good things. One of the main reasons I draw comperisons between Farscape and Mass Effect is the aliens though. Farscape has the wildest and craziest aliens I've ever seen, one thing I also love about Mass Effect. Frankly I haven't seen anything that can compare in another sci-fi series.

This. Mass Effect captures the political and moral aspects of B5, which is fantastic and gives the two a very similar feel.
Farscape was always too cheesy for me to watch. I'm sure it had moments I would have enjoyed, but the juvenile humor and horrible SFX combined to make it hard for me to sit through an episode.

I'll agree that Bab5 has a greater connection, but have you ever actually watched an episode of Farscape? The SFX for the time were amazing. I guess I could see the humor being juvenile in some eps (anything involving Rigel, really), but I just... I don't see it.

Hmmmm, already had a number of replies from people who obviously didn't read the OP, can't blame you it's long winded. So just so you know, I'm not saying Mass Effect stole anything, I'm not saying it was heavily inspired by farscape, I'm simply saying if you like Mass Effect you may fall in love with Farscape as I find it to be the best sci-fi show to fill my Mass Effect adiction, as I think the two have a number of simularities you can't find in many sci-fi shows.
A great man named Stephen Colbert once said, "Theres a diffrence between imitation and emulation." I beleave this is very true. Starcraft STOLD from warhammer 40k, literally, long story between that one. Mass Effect pays tributes to the greats, it's inspired by the greats, but it does not steal from the greats.
It reminds me of one show in particular, Farscape, who Morrigan's voice actor (dragon age) stared in. Some one on on the penny-arcade forums said the ME universe was very much like a combination of Farscape and the new Star Trek movie. I couldn't agree more
Long story short, right around now, I'm sure allot of you are on your 2nd playthrough, and as great as the game may be, it will start to get old. Once that day comes I highley suggest you give Farscape a chance. It is simply one of the most brilliant shows ever created. And lucky for you guys, also stars hawt sexually charged blue alien chicks <3.
Give it a shot TRUST ME it's an amazing amazing amazing amazing amazing show. Heres the first episode. In five parts it's off the wall.

It was canceled after the 5th season, but was tied up with a very nice mini-series. Good news is, recent news that it's finally being brought back!
PS- Starts off somewhat light hearted at first, but by the end of the first season is just as dark as Mass Effect.
I've wanted to watch it since I finished DA: O but I think I'll save it for my post DA: A, pre-ME3 BioWare withdrawal this spring.

Yeah I think SciFi caved after the fan reaction to the canceling of the series. The MiniSeries was directed by Jim Henson's son, that I know.

Actually justa few days ago the main writer (forget his name) dropped some more infro on the upcoming comics (which have ranged from decent to good so far) and mentioned that the Webisodes were still in the works, although at a snails pace. Don't hold your breath, but don't write it off either. With Starcraft, The old republic, the extreme success of ME2, the Star Wars live action show, a new battlestar series, on the way, I predict the fantasy craze that WoW and Lotr created is on it's deathbed and will usher in a sci-fi craze.

I never watched Farscape, but I'll probably give that a whirl one of these days.
And not to hijack the thread, but is anyone getting the Firefly / Serenity references?
Goddamn heroes...

The Miranda/Aaron paralell - Both start out as enemies (Miranda, while not an enemy per se, was part of Cerberus while you were kicking their asses all over the Galaxy Map); I found their personalities similar, both 'made' for their roles, only relaizing their own worth after interaction with the 'plucky' hero
Samara/Zhaan - This struck most of all. Not just physically, but the character arc, people who had/are doing extremely morally questionably things for a greater good, and this may have allowed me to read more into Samara's character than others may have
I also so a strong resemblance between Jack and Chiana.

9. I'm a big sci-fi geek and this is easily the closest thing I've seen on TV to Mass Effect. One of the reasons I love ME is cause it reminds me of Farscape so much.

I take it you never saw Babylon 5?
Asari = Mimbari , even have the same color and head stylings
Human = Human (Even have groups inside the Human race that play out very much like Cerberus)
BUt like Farscape, Star Wars, etc. ME merely borrows familiar concepts.

The only direct influence I see is the Asari and Zhaan. The Asari joining and Zhaan's unity are essentially the same thing. There's also the casual outfit for male Shepard that looks a lot like Crichton's season 2+ getup.
I don't see the Miranda/Aeryn comparision except on the most superficial level (ie the tough chick stereotype). They are extremely different characters once you get to know them.

Hey, OP, it was canceled BEFORE the 5th season, in one of the greatest deuchebag moves a network has ever done. They were guaranteed a 5th so they ended the 4th with the cliffhanger, and then they were canceled... The miniseries served as the 5th season.
Just nitpicking.
Well the Sci-FI Channel is honestly one of the dumbest groups ever.
I mean the Cancel Stargate SG1 to go with a retread of SG1 only to cancel it to go with a new SG:U which only takes the worst from the SG series and merge it with some of the worst from the Galatica Series.
Refused to pick up Firefly after Fox canned it.
Produces Cheap F-Grade horror crap instead of picking up , for example, the B5 Rangers series.
And the beat goes on.
