Hey, OP, it was canceled BEFORE the 5th season, in one of the greatest deuchebag moves a network has ever done. They were guaranteed a 5th so they ended the 4th with the cliffhanger, and then they were canceled... The miniseries served as the 5th season.

Just nitpicking.

Well the Sci-FI Channel is honestly one of the dumbest groups ever.

I mean the Cancel Stargate SG1 to go with a retread of SG1 only to cancel it to go with a new SG:U which only takes the worst from the SG series and merge it with some of the worst from the Galatica Series.

Refused to pick up Firefly after Fox canned it.

Produces Cheap F-Grade horror crap instead of picking up , for example, the B5 Rangers series.

And the beat goes on.

Personally, SciFi died long before the switch to SyFy, but it's still dead and done as far as I'm concerned. The only remotely good show they have is Sanctuary...

I love Farscape, but I don't see how it has so much in common with Mass Effect. There are some similar themes and character archetypes but thats basically it.

1. It's one of the very very very few sci-fi shows that has aliens as wild as Mass Effects if not more so... and with just as detailed and rich biology, history, and culture. (star trek)

2. It's a great combination of humor and darkness. (star trek generations? data laughing... epic)

3. Alien sex up the wazooh. (ever watched enterprise? the orion slave girls where super hot)

4. giant violent lizard people that look like Krogan. (the gorn)

5. Short fat ugly greedy race thats good with $$$ (ferengi anyone?)

6. hot race of blue aliens that look VERY much like the asari. (i dont know about you but the andorian females are hot)

7. Amazing story mixed with loads of creativity and off the wallness. (tng, ds9, voy... need i go on?)

8. Similar art direction if you ask me. (datas art was cool as ****)

9. I'm a big sci-fi geek and this is easily the closest thing I've seen on TV to Mass Effect. One of the reasons I love ME is cause it reminds me of Farscape so much. (you talk utter BS)

ME has a lot in common with all other Space Operas. It isn't specifically based on Farscape any more than B5, Star Trek or Star Wars.

Actually I'm really enjoying Capricorn (prequel to battlestar.) And I gotta give credit where credit is do, SyFy is an awesome and clever name.

Why is it that everyone keeps saying that? I even made it clear in bold, I wasn't implying it was. Just saying it's the only sci-fi show to quench my thirst for crazy aliens and wild locations, something ME has plenty of :D

Caprica (First ep was kinda cool, but I'm not a big BSG fan), and no SyFy isn't. It's just about as bad of a switch as CN Real. 'Fraid we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

I take it you never saw Babylon 5?

Asari = Mimbari , even have the same color and head stylings :D
Human = Human (Even have groups inside the Human race that play out very much like Cerberus)

BUt like Farscape, Star Wars, etc. ME merely borrows familiar concepts.

uhh I never typed that so why am I being quoted as such?

FARSCAPE is especially amusing when you treat it as a allegory for a hapless American dude stuck in the Australian S&M leather scene where everyone wants to do nasty things to him, and it's slowly driving him nuts.

There was way to much leather on that show. It only worked on the bad guy who was so bad @** he looked scary while wearing a hawian t-shirt... which he often did. Harvey was the best character!

Generally, I agree, but truthfully there are influences from...well, everywhere, going beyond sci-fi even.

I never watched Farscape, but I'll probably give that a whirl one of these days.

And not to hijack the thread, but is anyone getting the Firefly / Serenity references?

Goddamn heroes...

Yeah, definitely. The Collectors seemed very Reaver to me in the sense that they're on "the fringes of the galaxy".
I do love me some Firefly though.

Yeah I would say so. I got a lot of Firefly/Farscape vibes from it. But also a fairly large bit of Blade Runner.

That advertisement at the Citadel talking about off world colonies sounds nearly identical in voice to the blimp advertising off world colonies in Blade Runner. Pretty cool.

On the Firefly note, does anyone else think it would extremely awesome if they made a Firefly game using the same gameplay system as Mass Effect? Maybe play as a new hire on the crew and you could take Jayne and Zoe out on missions to rob banks, steal things, and fight Reavers, bandits, and Alliance troops? I think that would seriously be the coolest game ever.

I think Mass Effect is influenced by many show/filsm/books in the science fiction genre, personally Farscape isn't what springs to mind first but I can see some similarites but many more in other sci-fi stories.

And yeah Firefly references ftw, just love the fact Adam Baldwin is in it alone.

Did anyone else catch the Crazy Ivan reference that Joker made when you first get the new Normandy? (At least that is when I heard it.) Also, I would love more of anything Firefly, I am still waiting for the damned Shepherd Book comics to come out.

I can't believe the comics have only got one fleeting mention in this awesome-filled thread. They're fantastic. Easily as good as the show ever was, I think they capture the characters perfectly. And while I wouldn't necessarily say Mass Effect has ever really reminded me of Farscape (except Shepard's epic Chrichton casual wear), it does strike the same "awesome scifi, well written, deep characters etc" buttons. It's one of the few shows I can honestly say I liked every single episode of, all four seasons through.

Although, gotta say, I really disliked some of the choices they made in the miniseries. I mean, they totally changed Sikozu's entire look, with no explanation. She practically looked like a different species. They changed Pilot's voice completely, even though it was the same VA. They randomly made Jool go feral for no reason. And D'Argo, I mean come on, that was pretty unnecessary. I never understood the need for any of those changes, and if I hadn't checked, I wouldn't have believed the entire thing was written by the show's creators.

Also of note - the comics change Sikozu back to her normal look, and they're running a D'Argo series side-by-side with the main series. I don't want to use the phrase "speaks volumes", but maybe I'm not the only one who saw something wrong with The Peacekeeper Wars.

lolno.   Mass effect borrows a LOT from Sci fi in general, but I think its kind of stupid you can pin all the inspiration to Farscape...which I flat out disagree with.

yea im interested to see what movies will inspire mass effect 3 honestly.

look at kasumi for instance shes kotor mixed with james bond in the me universe wich i though was fantastic.

when you go find thane in the veichle the cut scene reminds me of star wars episode 2 ( coruscant chase scene)

as for the collectors ( independance day)

jack basicly remind me of logan from xmen orgines wolverine with her own back story

Funny that this thread crops up as I started watching the Farscape series again, and I was largely inspired by Mass Effect to do so. I wouldn't say that the ME universe was based on Farscape but there are some similarities. John Crichton reminds me a little of Shepard with his ability to hold a diverse, often divisive group of aliens together. Crichton also carries important wormhole information, that not even he can fully access, and it is something that drives the entire series. Shepard was exposed to the Prothean beacon, etc. and so becomes the most wanted figure for the Collectors and Reapers.

As for the Farscape universe: its characters travel through the dark and seedy uncharted territories. In ME2, Shepard and company travel through the Terminus systems which share some resemblance to the Farscape worlds, especially Omega station.
