I'd like to see 6 Expansions (where Awakening is the first) taking us up to Level 100.

However, what we will more likely see is 4 Expansions, one released every 6 months or so, punctuated by a few DLC Levels, taking us to about Level 75.

Each could add...

- 12-13 Levels to gain
- A new tier to Talents/Spells
- A new Specialization for each class (Dragonslayer, Sniper, Necromancer etc.)
- A new Weapon Style (Spear, Unarmed, Spiked Chain/Whip etc.) for warriors
- A new Spell School (Illusion, Summoning etc.) for mages
- Increased Material Tiers (Star Metal, Diamond, Orichalcum, Dark Matter etc.)
- A new Race to choose from (Qunari for starters, Werewolves, Hurlocks etc.)

So by Level 75 there might be...

- 8 Tiers to each Talent/Spell
- 8 Specializations per class
- 8 Weapon Styles
- 8 Spell Schools
- maybe 16 Material Tiers (add two per expansion?)
- 7 Races to choose from

While I hope for more expansions, I hope we won't see this evolution of new levels and tiers. That would sort of inflate the game, and require new, ridiculously powerful enemies at every turn or possibly some level scaling that will make all sense of actual progress go away. I'd rather see that they finish up the story about our Grey Warden and start a new one.

I suspect you better get used to disappointment, because there are new spells and specializations on offer in Awakening.

You are missing the obvious. Dragon Age Origins already has monster scaling.

You fight Hurlocks at Level 1 and Level 25. While they are certainly 'easier' at Level 25, thats probably because the PCs stack quite a bit on top of the base statistics, rather than a disparity of base statistics themselves.

The base statistics being

PC Attack (Str/Dex) vs. Enemy Defense (Dex)
PC Damage (Str + Weapon) vs. Enemy Armor (Armor)

To which PCs add...

Bonuses from talents/spells
Bonuses from magic weapons
Bonuses from runes
etc.

Take away those bonuses and a Hurlock is as tough at Level 1 as he is Level 25...with the caveat that Bioware have a fixed Level Range for each monster in the game...and we don't know what that Level range is. It might be that Hurlocks only go up to Level 16 regardless of what Level the PCs are.

Looking at the Prima Guide Bestiary Section (which is pretty poor Mr Searle), they do explain the basics of this and list what Level a monster is compared to a PC (or specifically compared to the Level of a PC when they first enter that Dungeon Area).

One-Hit Kill = PC Level -2
Critter = PC Level -3
Weak Normal = PC Level -2
Normal = PC Level -1
Lieutenant = PC Level
Boss = PC Level +1
Elite Boss = PC Level +2

We have already seen from Screenshots of Awakening, that PCs fight Hurlocks in the game. My guess is Bioware have rescaled Hurlocks (who are normal rank opponents) so that they don't get left behind for Levels 20-37.

However, its unlikely they will rescale them for PC bonuses, so a Hurlock may be a far easier opponent than it was at Level 5 or whatever.

New monsters should be tested against PCs with bonuses of the appropriate level however. Certainly the children look very threatening.

I know Dragon Age has monster scaling, and it gets a bit silly as it is. I can fight and kill a genlock at level 1, and while it gets a lot easier, it's still something you need to pay attention about at level 25. At level 1, I was pretty much unarmored swinging an iron dagger while at level 25 I'm armored in dragon scale wielding dragonbone swords. There's a huge difference between my character at level 1 and my character at level 25. I'm not too happy about the difference in challenge presented by the opponents in between this levels, but it's still acceptable. However, if you add another 50 levels, I'm not so sure I'd be able to put up with it anymore.

On a note unrelated to level scaling, I think it would be nice from a story telling perspective if they let the story about the Grey Warden end. There are lots and lots of interesting places in Thedas, but it would feel more gratifying for me to have a definite end to my current character's story. It could easily feel contrived if the writers are forced to come up with reasons to send the Warden out travelling in latter expansions, just to show off the world they have created.

But Hurlocks in the expansion will be smart!

"Rargh, I calculate this equation first, then I kill you. And we're all happy. Rarrgh!"
