I think that's his name...any secrets to take him down?  I have run through it 5 times now and can't manage to kill him.

Which difficulty, which class(es) are/were you and at which level? Also, which party?

Against Gahxkang are the following things helpfull:

- Mana Clash. Kill his magical abilities for some time

- Stun, stun and more stun capabilities. When he is in his Arcane Horror form, if you do it right, you can take him for minimal 60% down, or even for the full 100% - he won't stand a chance then. Since he only switches when he can move

- Have someone act as bait - and keep them alive. Attempt to get your mages on some distance - unlike the true revenants, this guy won't really use pull - or at least in very rare occassions.

High magic resist. Knight-Commander's Armor from outside Orzammar + Spellward from Bodahn = dead Gaxxkang. There's a video in my signature if you want to see how it works, but that's really the size of it.

Mana Clash if you got it.  I've taken 50% of his health right off the bat using mana clash.

Sometimes you gotta celanse first, then follow with a mana clash.

the first time i fought him, i could not get him down, it took for ever.

Next time, he went down easy, then i realized i had 2 templars hitting him the second time. Find a way to take away his mana

Yes, Alistair or any other Templar can do really well against him especially if you support him with a dedicated healer.

High spell power 100+ (spell might and wisp), +30 spirit damage, vulnerability hex and mana clash = 1 hit kill.
My mage dealt 2200 damage on Gaxkang.
Difficulty = hard

If he resists the mana clash but you can keep his threat on the tanks, try placing glyphs of neutralisation under his feet without catching the tanks if you can - even if he breaks aggro and attacks somewhere else, the glyph will have drained his mana.

Honestly? I go in there with my main, Alistair, Morigan and Zeveran, make sure i'm pretty well equipped, Juggernaut Plate on my Main, Starfang, Warden Commander Armor on Alistair and what not and i straight up beat him down, no tactics just an all out bum rush, i keep everyone chugging potions and it works just fine, i think i'm lvl 14-16 at that point

He is relatively easy in his arcane warrior form if you hit him with mana clash or templars. In his revanent form you just have to keep healing your guys and hitting him.

There are 2 main problem I've found with him. The first is that he drains your attack making it close to impossible to hit him sometimes so you need to have cleanse area for your templars or dispell magic available.

The second is that his spellcasting form is ultra powerful so you have to use mana clash right away or will destroy you. For this you need high spellwpower and have to wait a second for him to complete the swtch from person to spellcaster yet not wait too long as he seems to resist everything after he has a couple of seconds to buff himself.

Another trick is to use cone of cold on him when possible he will often resist it but when he doesn't those few moments where he is frozen are key.

Finally, try forcing him into one room and placing your healers in the other room as he seems to target your party members who cast heal spells. This prevents him from attacking your healers and killing them in two hits as there is a wall between them.

other than this bring plenty of lyrium, set your mages first priorty to heal and in my last battle with him I found it usefull to cast plenty of hexes on him. Also, curse of mortality is crucially important as it stops him from healing as he gains health everytime he switches form.

I did it with Alistair, Wynne, Leliana and my elven mage PC. Alistair taking on tanking duties (at this point he was a champion templar so I was able to double whammy buff party AND hit gax with Al's swanky templar abilities). Wynne dedicated to keeping him alive, PC popping pofions and trying to stun as much as possible with cage as it came up Ice wasn't working too well and I got lucky that Al's paralyze enchant went off several times in the fight. Stunning him with anything you got works really well.

I've had good luck in various playthroughs with: + cold resist items, + magic resist items, + mental resist items, stunning abilities (Shield Pummel, Pommel Strike, etc.), Paralyze runes, Misdirection Hex, Death Hex, Curse of Mortality, Magebane poison on the blades of anybody but Alistair (who gets the same effect free for being a Templar), Cleanse Area, Cone of Cold, and Glyph of Neutralization. Not all at the same time, of course!

Strangely enough, I haven't found Holy Smite very useful. Maybe I'm just not getting the timing right on that one.  I haven't used Mana Clash on any of my mages so far, so I can't speak to that personally.

I think holy smite fails because he has a high enough mental resitance to resist it everytime. You probably need really high magic for it to work, which wouldn't really be worth it on a templar, obviously.

Stun, freeze, etc. Hold him in place in a way that he can't fight back and its actually not too hard. If you can't do that... good luck.

The stun will fail, but it will still suck some mana from him, which is a good thing.

Makes sense.

When he was resisting my Mana Clash like mad, I dropped a glyph of paralysis on him and I think the stun reduced his resistance to almost nothing.

Mana Clash for 1309 damage. Heck ya.

Surprising no one posted this but theres a little "Glitch" with Gax right off the bat. If you look closely as soon as the fight starts he will be in "human" form and has NO resist rate. Cast Mana Clash with Spell Might already up right away and boom!.... Heavy Hitter trophy :D

Heh, Mana Clash will give you the Heavy Hitter trophy if you use it on a Hurlock Emmissary.
