I probably won't romance any male characters. Yes, that makes me shallow but so what. All my female characters are lesbians. If there are no lesbians onboard the Normandy or a romancible Asari then I guess she will remain single.

well in real life I wouldn't get involved with anyone as full of herself as Miranda or as screwed up as Jack but I'll probably do both on future male-Shep playthroughs. I'm a completionist

I also have dwarven and elvish characters in Dragon Age of both genders, but in real life I'm secretly human (shh don't tell anyone!)

I don't see the problem.

This. Though i never connect with FemShep as much with MaleShep... even that connection is shallow. I'm detached when it comes to characters, in books or games or whereever.

Is it the romance specifically that is difficult or just playing as another gender in general? Because female gamers have to play as males all the time.

I guess I can see where you might find it unnerving if your play style requires to to completely relate to your main character. I have issues with this when it comes to being evil in Dragon Age- just can't bring myself to be nefarious and even though it's just pixels, I can never quite pull off a full evil playthrough.

I can't quite pull off a renegade playthrough, sad as it is. I feel bad. When playing say, an MMO where you interact with others, I don't like to play as a female due to my maleness. I'm not good at it.

In a single player game, I could care less. My first 2 playthroughs were male, and now its female. I just like to see how characters react to it.

Being uncomfortable with it is okay, but if you try to mess with people on it, I think it speaks more to your own insecurities.

Hell, there are even people who feel like their chosen gender isn't right, and playing as a male or female in the game is more 'them.'

that certainly ain't wrong and shame on ye' if you judge folks harshly because of it, but thats its own can of worms.

The ass jiggling is also nice, though.

lets be hoens tthe girls have a hard time in this ggam eint erms of romances, sure garrus is awesome but you know he looks wiiiierd and i don't want to think how the logistics of it works.

Thane is also awesome but he is dying of space aids and his wife death is fairly recent and so not an area i'd want to tread.

and then there is jacob who earns my official seal of Blandness premoting him to Captain Bland....

bioware seem to have difficulty makign decent romances for a female PC. i think Zevran from DA was the only decent one and even then he is a lil full on.

Well, this is a somewhat welcome variation on the M/M romance dead horse...  B)

Some guys like looking at a woman's behind for 30+ hours of gameplay rather than a guy's.  Some of those guys don't play the romances when they do that.  Others do just to explore the gameplay and get all the content they can.  Others do it because they just enjoy the story and are secure enough that it doesn't cause them to question their sexuality.  And others might even use it as a way to explore their sexuality.  Most, however, probably just figure it's a game, they're roleplaying, and femSheps kick ass.  :P

Haha, my fem shepherds are always single, they are too focused to worry about sexing up someone. I think I may go for someone though when I play my paragon femshep though. Not sure who though.....

Yeah, I'm a female gamer, so mostly I'm forced to play males. When I have a choice, I play my actual gender, but it's not a big deal for me unless it comes to romances. I mean, I want decent male LIs for my female character if I'm playing my actual gender. That being said, since it IS role-playing, I wouldn't mind playing a male character to see how their romances play out per se - it's just that by the time I'm done with all the male LIs that I'm interested in on my FemShep, I'm usually a little too burned out to start a male character and do everything all over again. It was enough of a struggle just motivating myself to get my FemShep to 60 in ME1 - heh.

At any rate, my opinion as a female is that I think BioWare has done pretty well with our romances overall (ignoring Anomen anyway - he was a tad on the annoying side, although I did it just for the novelty factor). :P I thought Alistair was great in DA:O, and I liked Thane far more than I expected. I'm even going to give Garrus a test run - seems like a nice enough romance. It's not that I didn't like Kaidan, but umm, Thane was particularly compelling - besides, I melted at the warrior-angel thing. :P

I've never had any issue with playing a female character and romancing a male npc. To me it's not much different then a movie or book.

I don't - and won't on future playthroughs either. My FemShep had to settle for a kiss from Liara and mild flirting and dinner with Kelly :).

I don't think the OP was wondering all that much about playing as a femshep.
More how you (if straight) could try and "hit" and charm another male character in the game.
Yes, Chris I think he knows it isn't really space.

The question is, do you all know the term "Bi-Curious".
I personally wouldn't have a problem playing a femshep and see the sexy female body, I would however feel odd just as the OP trying to "pursue" another male, talking it up with innuendos (pun intended).

The really odd thing is that now being straight is almost in question on these boards.

There is a big difference playing as a gender (toomb raider anyone) and all the females having to play as male's in 90% of the games, going from that to actively pursuing the other sex.
Role playing I get it.

Personally I role play my fantasy, you know the outerspace hero and the guy who get's the girl and kicking ass.
I know that techincally you role play a female character in the situation in this topic, but that is different than actively trying to bed the same sex.
Romancing Liara I can see. going for the guy and being a guy, is either a gay trying to get some semblance of romance with another male or a guy/girl that is bi-curious.

Just my 2 cents .

That's usually a good enough reason to pick a female character (I always pick male character in MMOs these days though) :) - but I imagine the main reason to do that in Mass Effect, for male and female players alike, tends to have a lot more to do with the voice acting than body shape.

i'm a guy and i have two female shepards. One is a lesbian and the other was a cold-blooded renegade soldier and a loner. She was a my ultimate "dark-side" character for ME role-playing, so I didn't get her involved in any romances. I'm with the original poster, I don't like romancing male characters, regardless of my character's gender. It's just me.
