There are no powerful mage builds!

The skill trees do not allow you to build a formidable mage. Mages should bemega powerful in games such as this as they are in fantasy worlds like Tolkiens.
Mines as wimpy as you like,

Get all of the glyphs, force field, the regular heal, spirit healer specialization for the group heal and rez, the ice abilities from primal, the first lightning ability, and the elemental hexes from entropy. I've easily crushed everything on normal aside from revenants.
You have to use the spells properly though. Start fights with the paralysis + repulsion glyph combo. Follow up with the AoE elemental hex and blizzard, then either use the cone aoe at the edge of the blizzard or start working on single targets with the single target ice and lightning attacks. If your tank or your mage are getting beaten up by too many enemies, use forcefield. Otherwise, use it to take bosses etc. out of the fight. Use group heal if you need it, it's really strong.
This works with pretty much any element, though. My actual character uses electricity and is an arcane warrior; I have morrigan using ice, which I'd have picked if I had known it was as good as it is. Regardless of the element, enemies get paralyzed in the elemental AoEs for so long that when they get out they only have maybe 10% health left. If you have two mages they'll probably die before the paralyze even wears off.
Arcane warrior is nice for being able to equip big armor; when I used heavy plate mail + the AW shield I saw a world of difference with my main character; nothing can really hurt him with that up. I still end up using a staff rather than swords most of the time though. Spirit healer is more useful though, I think, so go with that first.

Mages are far from weak, but I guess it depends on how you define power, it doesn't lie solely in damage.
In my eyes the ability to paralyze en masse or freeze entire groups in place is quite powerful. If you're looking for straight damage there are some particularly devastating combos to use. I've personally had a certain combo hit 352 damage.

Lotro series does not have nay healers either , should we remove them to make the game harder and more like the books say they should be? I think the mages are overpowered compared to the rogues. A rogue should be able to 1 shot any mage.

On that note, I was also VERY disappointed the first time I saw the spell effects--particularly the arcane bolt. That one nearly made me cry. Outside of the fire-related spells, the effects for everything I've seen (I haven't seen close to everything, mind you) have been very, very underwhelming. I'm talking uglier-than-infinity engine-effects here. I mean, if they're going to bill the game as a spiritual successor the BG, it should at the very least have better spell effects ten years after.

Make sure you pick a specification and stick with it. Don't pick some heals or buffs, then some offensive spells, then something else, and spread yourself too thin.
If you'd like a build that can totally decimate the encounters in this game, send me a PM, or post in the Spoilers forum.

In my experience I have found Mages to be, by far, the most powerful class in the game. This is generally accepted around the Office as well.

This is true. And I've been comtinplating posting a discussion on this.
Why ARE mages so much more powerful, versitile, and better in pretty much every way then the other classes? Why are archers so bad? Why was so much effort put into mage combo spells, giving them mana based (thus infinite) healing options, etc? Why aren't the other classes this flushed out in design?
Its really odd. And frankly dissappointing.
