Each of the builds I have tried are as weak as you like.
The skill trees do not allow you to build a formidable mage. Mages should bemega powerful in games such as this as they are in fantasy worlds like Tolkiens.
Mines as wimpy as you like,
There are no powerful mage builds!

In my experience I have found Mages to be, by far, the most powerful class in the game. This is generally accepted around the Office as well.
Make sure you pick a specification and stick with it. Don't pick some heals or buffs, then some offensive spells, then something else, and spread yourself too thin.
