you want a bad ass spell, try tempest, in the electric line of primal. it look cool as hell and if you keep the enemies in it does a lot of dmg. excellent for clearing rooms. ill open door and cast tempest. the cone of cold the enemies as the run at me. every enemy will be below 50% HP minimum. but thats mainly on undead, havent run into and electric resistance mobs yet.
Death Cloud
Tempest

No mages are defiantly not weak, damage wise at least.

Also for the record this is my second playthrough and I found that any build that doesn't incorporate cone of cold or earthquake will fail at trying to be an offensive caster. Also lightning is pretty crappy as far as DPS goes, your better of going for fireball and inferno.

In my experience I have found Mages to be, by far, the most powerful class in the game. This is generally accepted around the Office as well.
Make sure you pick a specification and stick with it. Don't pick some heals or buffs, then some offensive spells, then something else, and spread yourself too thin.
If you'd like a build that can totally decimate the encounters in this game, send me a PM, or post in the Spoilers forum.

I remember when I started to solo Nightmare as a Mage at the Tower of Ostagar looking at a room full of paralyzed/frozen mobs, blinked, and then wondered "Ok, now they are all CCed... but how the hell am I supposed to kill them all?"

Actually I think he admits that just like in any almost RPG, when building a character there are three important things to remember: specialize, specialize, specialize. Making a jack-of-all-trades means you do poorly in everything instead of awesome at one particular something. The weaknesses of the specialized character are shored up by other characters in your party specializing in something different.

People please!
There is more than one paragraph in his post!
You're BOTH right!

Make sure you plan out your spell rotations as well as what your companions will be doing during your spells. A tough battle requires everyone to act in unison as a team.
Though sometimes I send Alistar in during an earthquake for giggles.

Did the OP just create a post to try and see how many people he could get to openly disagree with him?... hmm either that or hes not been using those grey cells of his and doing something just plain silly like tanking with bare fists.
I think it was a trap he set for Bioware to admit mages are OP.
Bioware will always phrase something in a way that defends the game.
So if someone says "pffh mages are useless, what gives Bioware?" that's an irresistable lure for a Bioware employee to pop out and say "aha, you couldn't be more wrong, in fact MAGES BREAK THE GAME!"

Thanks everyone, I have to say making antagonistic statements in forums works far better than simply asking for help. Isn't it strange how the desire to prove oneself right is more powerful than the desire to lend a helping hand for some.
Thanks for all the comments :-)
I have just noticed this post of the OP. hahar looks like he did use those grey cells of his. tushay

I don't get this. It's a singleplayer game, who cares about balanced classes? If you find one class is "overpowered" and you like that, then play as that class, if you don't like that and you want a challenge, don't play as that class. It couldn't be more simple.
What if I don't like how the difficulty of my game jerks all over the place depending on how many mages I happen to bring?
What if I like the personality of a mage but don't like how easy she makes fights?
When I chose "normal" or "hard" or "easy" difficulty at the start of the game, that's how hard the game should be. I shouldn't have to worry about tripping over God Mode. I shouldn't have to ask myself at the start of every dungeon, "how easy do I want to make this for myself?" The game's job is to PROVIDE the difficulty so that I can focus instead on the more fun task of overcoming it.

Each of the builds I have tried are as weak as you like.
The skill trees do not allow you to build a formidable mage. Mages should bemega powerful in games such as this as they are in fantasy worlds like Tolkiens.
Mines as wimpy as you like,
