here's my formula.miasma 1st,(self) mass paralysis, inferno, death cloud, mind blast after that if needed to keep the aggro that will be coming your way at bay.i hurt many things with this strategy.
There are no powerful mage builds!

Did anyone invest in the Mage line at the very top? I maxed out the Mage part. I use Waking Nightmare,The Cone of cold and Tempest for the lightning line.

you want a bad ass spell, try tempest, in the electric line of primal. it look cool as hell and if you keep the enemies in it does a lot of dmg. excellent for clearing rooms. ill open door and cast tempest. the cone of cold the enemies as the run at me. every enemy will be below 50% HP minimum. but thats mainly on undead, havent run into and electric resistance mobs yet.
Eh, you just use Inferno/Blizzard over those. My mage has Tempest and Inferno himself and Morrigan has Blizzard and Death cloud (or whatever Cloudkill was called here), so it's almost a choice of style for me whether to burn, freeze or electrocute the bad guys.

Party with a mage >>> party without a mage. But the game was designed for you to take one of each class plus another as a 4th party member. I've found that one of the best uses of mages is to set up kills for the other characters. Stun/paralysis effects with a rogue with the always backstab immobilised enemies talent. Or freezing combined with one of the always gets a critical hit talents.
They would have been a lot less powerful with the original potion mechanic though...
