Murky waters at Ostagar (or what did Cailan know that we don't?)

That would require too much forethought for Cailan. Marrying Celene seems more a cabbage brained grab for glory than anything to do with heirs. Anora's barren state simply used as an excuse. Since Celene is probably older than Anora, she's just as much a risk as Anora in the heir department.

Thus, I do not think Cailan is really that concerned with heirs and the future, beyond his own shortsightedness.

Cailan: She's totally smokin' and that accent. Ga-rowl!

Also:

Cailan to himself: Loghain is always going on about Orlesian degenerates. I hope he's right!

I'm going to be lame and say that without Cailan's thurst for glory, the game wouldn't have happened. THAT is why he didn't wait. But seriously though, it seemed like him and Duncan were planning something for Loghain (which is awesome in my book), and I think that Cailan was playing up the confident side of himself to potentially throw Loghain off. Knowing Loghain, he was onto their little plan.

Uh, you're suggesting Cailan wanted Loghain dead?  Where do you get that?

No, I'm not seeing that either. Cailan might have been planning to wed himself to Celene but I don't see anything to indictate that he and Duncan were planning "something" for Loghain.

Cailan must be a hyper moron if he thought that Loghain would just sit idly by and accept his marriage to Celene. Of course Cailan is a hyper moron, so he probably didn't have anything planned for Loghain. Celene on the otherhand...

I'm a bit shocked to see my thread back, I must say. It managed to go all this way in a very civil fashion, though, so I'd really rather that if it continues, it stays thoughtful, polite, and without a lot of character hate for any of the characters, 'kay? It was a bit of a rarity in that it managed to do that, for the most part, so it has a special place in my heart. ;)

Cailan probably figures Loghain would have no choice if the LM accepts it. And well, he wouldn't, short of civil war.

I can't imagine the Landsmeet letting Cailan keep the throne once he announced his plan to marry Celene. Bryce Cousland would have the crown so quick Cailan's head would spin.

Shame I liked the idea of Cailan being more than he appeared.

Well yeah, I don't think it would go over well. But going back to what we were saying, I can't see Cailan trying to take Loghain out or anything.

Hyper moron or no, I'd be surprised if he thought Fereldens in general (namely, the Landsmeet) would accept such a thing.

Remember the context of this marriage. Orlais' army that Celene sent would have helped save Ferelden from the Blight. Cailan might think that this is enough. Celene might have more plans in mind.

True...I'm assuming that at least some nobles would be astute enough to realize that such a marriage would give Orlais a "foot in the door" to taking Ferelden back, even if Cailan wasn't able to see that (or didn't think it was much of a problem).

I am sure Celene would have known how to deal with them. It would surely have not depended on Cailan, at least informally.

Yep Cailan got to run around with a bigger crown, and call himself an emperor, while Orlais took over Ferelden, and before they knew it there was nothing they could do.

Thank goodness that ogre popped him like a ketchup packet then.

Now I just imagined Mel Gibson replaced by an Ogre in the Patriot.

meh

One set of nobles is no different then another. I saw nothing to admire in the rulers of Ferelden or how they governed. Orlais may be far worse but if they had taken over Ferelden or won the war, I don't think I'd feel to bad Ferelden either way.

Yes, we don't know what the game devs planned but I'm sure they would have made it balanced somehow, with a faction supporting the marriage etc.

Except that the Alienages in Orlais are described as far worse than in Ferelden, the peasants are serfs in Orlais, Chevaliers have raping priveliges on all non-nobles, and bards run around everywhere causing havoc like in Leliana's Song.

Except for all the nobles who will be killed, all the peasants who will get raped and/or killed by Chevaliers, the massive amount of money and natural resources that Orlais WILL exploit.
Yah no worse for the wear! <_<:pinched:

I didn't say the situation would be better. In fact, I know it'd be much worse for everyone. I just wouldn't feel all that bad for Ferelden.

Why? Because you didn't like the nobles?
