Actually no it wasnt, predominately the upper classes was Caucasian true but aside from religion European civilization was remarkably cosmopolitan. We aren't talking about roman slaves or remnants of the legions either as they were just as likely to be Caucasian, but trade economic movement all existed in roman times and while muted in the period from the end of the 5th century to the 9th it certainly continued and flourished as trade expanded again with time, this is certainly more evident in the mentioned period in continental Europe than the UK.Trigonous wrote...

Or like most mideval type realms, they are based on mideval times. That is, Europe. Europe in those times was entirely caucasian.

If you stopped to think, you might realize that the reason for this is the basic human association of light = good, and darkness = evil, instead of turning it into a race issue and giving yourself more excuse for a victim mentality.elkston wrote...
Yeah, but most fantasy worlds treat people of color like they don't even exist. And when they do they are always the "bad" guys. (Dark Elves).

I was able to make a black character, though I wish we had more options for "black" hair. We either get cornrows, very short hair, or bald. Everybody else gets to choose from many other styles.
Also an unfortunate oversight is that despite my character being black, my parents (using the Human Warrior origin) and sibling are still white. I figure they could at least have done something like Fallout 3 in this respect and have perhaps 3 sets of "parents" depending on what race you chose. (No need for 3 voice sets, just different models).
Actually your character's skin tone does not restrict your hair choices. That's a self imposed restriction, so you should probably direct your complaints towards the closest mirror.

Or we could view it as an issue of the races that actually exist in the game world. God forbid that a game world is created without high-melanin content!
Except there's a black person in the very first town you head to.

After the initial shock, I just basically ignored customizing my character's appearance. I mean, why bother? Maybe I'm just spoiled because every game that lets you customize your character lets you customize your character... so instead of playing me, I'm now playing this red headed elf that looks like Brad Pitt. I guess that's better than nothing....

No no no. Since dark elves became a player race the whole species consists of nothing but chaotic good rebels yearning to throw off the reputation of their evil kin. (OOTS)
Also, there are dark-skinned people in Thedas, but most of them live in Rivain, not Ferelden. I'm sure in a few years we'll see a DA game set in Rivain and people will be complaining about how they can't make a white character.

That is wrong, the Moors were black and definately they were in Europe. Actually, William Shakespeare would call anyone black a 'Moor'.
Also, with how close Spain and Italy are to Northern Africa there can be little doubt people of different colour were in Europe even before the medieval period.

Also, I am african-american (I prefer Black, but I am using the current politically correct term to avoid problems on the forums), and have been a gamer for many years. I have never had issue with the ability, or lack of, to create images of myself in a game. I've found that most games DO incorperate african-american characters, and the occasional game taht doesn't just really isn't an issue.
I'd be far angrier if I was female, it seems most games are written from/for a male perspective, and I have played MANY games where playing a female wasn't even an option (not that I would... but that's another post really).
Peace, and happy adventuring!

When i created my character i could create a pretty darkskinned character.
However i could not create a pale white character, or a character with golden blonde hair, also creating a native american looka-like or asian or albino is also not possible, why not complain about that too?
If skin colour is so important for you you could always put down the brightness slider really dark.
Would make more sense complaining about the lack of height and weight sliders.

It's even more unfortunate when you consider that there was a long thread with David Gaider and other devs, where we talked about this issue when the game was still in development.
-------- It has NOTHING to do with racism or anything. No one is accusing Bioware of being racist, so please don't de-rail the thread with your overly simplistic and incorrect assessments ----------
From what I saw in the Character Creator, it *DOES* take a lot of work to create a black character. Not just the hair and facial features, but the skin tones are all off. I had to mess with my computer's gamma settings, and do a lot of tweaking before I could come up with a realistic looking black skin complexion. I'm not exactly sure what went wrong with the color palette here.
There are some other awkward things such as having siblings and parents that look nothing like you. I feel that there are ways this could have been avoided with much effort on Bioware's part (a simple reference to an adoption or something).
The larger issue is that black and other non-white rpg'ers have dealt with these awkward things in the past, but seeing as how there were threads about it while the game was still in development, it's a bit of a disappointment when Bioware didn't take it into account.
Again, please don't de-rail the thread. We're not idiots screaming "racism !" or conspiracy theories involving Bioware developers with white hoods (besides Chris Priestly can't wear a hood, because his devil horns wouldn't fit

Dark elves tend to be some shade of blue? How many black people do you know that are blue? Or have pointy ears?
And there is a pretty good option available in the human presets, I would just go from there.
Drow of DnD are suposed to be obsidian black
Lineage game tend to use grey for Dark Elf
WoW have dark blue dark elf yeah
Warhammer dark elf are quite pale skinned
