I just must admit I don't really care that much. Characters are mostly white because developers are (probably) mostly white and their audience they're trying to sell it to are also mostly white. Do not get me wrong I'm not saying black people don't play games, it's just that most white people want to play a white character because it feels more like them. It's not a racism thing, I'm sure most black people want to play a black character and it's good that RPG's offer those options.
I think you could make a similiar arguement on why females aren't usually the main character in normal games. It's just that as far as I know male gamers outnumber female gamers by far.
Hell being gay myself it kinda sucks that there's very rarely gay main characters but I'm not complaining as it would kinda suck for everyone else.

Thats not true at all.  Id say 40% of my gamer friends who enjoy RPgs are black.

Maybe for you its mostly white peopel who play RPGS, but overall, around the world there are all kinds of races that LOVE RPGS.. its just not white people!

I have Japense friends who love RPGS, I have white friends who love rpgs, I have chinese friends who love RPGS, I have black friends who love rpgs and I have brazilian friends who love RPG's.

Sorry, but I find your post a little silly, acting like only white people play RPG's. That is just not the case at all. In fact, it  was an african american who told me about this game and got me hooked. Same with Ultima Online and Shenmue.

Why do you say this here? "Characters are mostly white because developers are (probably) mostly
white and their audience they're trying to sell it to are also mostly
white."???

I dont know how you can say that. How on earth do you know that DEVELOPERS AUDIENCE IS MOSTLY WHITE?
That is complete garbage and not true, I dont know what planet you are living on, but there are alot of differnt races that LOVE videogames, its not 90% white people as you seem to think it is.

When I go to EB games or walmart to pick up a PC or 360 game there is always a mix of differnt races, Chines, black, white,etc...

Yeah, but most fantasy worlds treat people of color like they don't even exist.  And when they do they are always the "bad" guys. (Dark Elves).

If you stopped to think, you might realize that the reason for this is the basic human association of light = good, and darkness = evil, instead of turning it into a race issue and giving yourself more excuse for a victim mentality.

This is not a basic "human" association. This is a culturally deteremined inclination. Your ignorance is shameful.

Excuse me?

Humans rely mostly on eyesight, it's their strongest and most developed sense. So for a human, darkness means the cancellation of his most developed sense, whereas light lets him use it. Therefore, darkness has always been considered bad and light, good. Don't use words like 'ignorance' and 'shameful' when you don't even know what you're talking about.

This isn't really the game to complain about such an issue. Go play GTA or some other crime related game if you want to be black.

The countries in the game are based on Europe, the human noble is from Ferelden and his family has been there far longer than most (or her family). So your family is white, Fereldens are based on the English (orlesians on the french, antivans on spainsh/italian, etc). Black humans are from Ravina (i believe) so maybe they should of had a origin where you're a traveling nomad who runs into trouble in ferelden, and impresses duncan - who is half ravinian half ferelden

I dont know, i get why BioWare is trying to keep consistency, but it'd be nice to see them integrate diversity as well

My god, there's some repulsive posts in this thread. Racism sucks, people, even when you're just trolling it's not clever or funny.

The simple fact is, Fereldin's climate means that dark skin pigmentation doesn't really occur. There are probably far darker-skinned people a long way to the south of the game world, but since large-scale trade between Fereldin and those places isn't occuring, let alone migration, seeing black people in Fereldin would be an extreme rarity.

I don't get it when people complain about not being able to make black characters when you already cannot make a BEARDED WOMAN in the character editor!! :(

In china, white is associated with death rather than black. It IS culturally determined.

Wow, first role playing game where I can't make my character look at least SOMEWHAT simliar to me...

well, that's very, very fair.

i don't know what version you have, but i have the pc version, and when i was making my character there were several black skin tones. hair is kinda bad all around in my opinion. heck, my male elf almost looks like a girl. i guess that's the way it is with all this modeling stuff. maybe the console version have less options. i don't know. do you have a console version?

It only takes time and patience. I was able to reproduce very convincing African features and skin tone with little problem. The hair textures are almost all for caucasians though. Oh well.

Main character is a citizen of Ferelden... now, how many dark skinned people you see walking around Ferelden?

There are some with darker tones coming from Antiva, but they're more of a mediterranean complexion (Antiva being based on italy and everything)

How do i know all this, well i was lucky enough to go to a private school that taught all kinds of history, which i love. Their are so many lies and untruths about all kinds of history, finding out the truth and backing it up with eye witness accounts, kind of ends the argument.

You're just peddling ridiculous Afrocentric nonsense from Ivan Van Sertima.  No serious historians accept his positions.

Or we could view it as an issue of the races that actually exist in the game world. God forbid that a game world is created without high-melanin content!

But that's usually the problem isn't it? That many game worlds don't feature those with "high-melanin content".  Lately we've been given the option to have a protagonist of color, but everyone knows that the real hero of the game/story is anything but a person of color.  It's kind of like what women had to deal with knowing that the hero of the story was 80%+ male (though I believe it's higher).  And like we always do (women and people of color alike) we deal with it, but even then it does start to get to you.

Believe me this is not something I've compained about to friends or anyone really, but it has slowly begun to bother me and I wish it didn't.

Says the person posting as a female with a male forum avatar!  Image IPB

Also, if I recall correctly, the last 15 years of television and movies pretty much revolves around empowering women...often at the expense of the men in the media.

Times have been a-changin'.

I enjoy making dark skinned characters and I understand the original poster's plight. My main is what I consider a dark skinned man in this gameand I was pleased with the result.

I accept the logic that darker skin tones are likely left out due to region or what have you, but I was still disappointed that the darker complexions that are available are on the tan/weathered looking side as opposed to something more even.

That said, I'm happy with my bald elf, but I think wanting to play a character that looks similar to one's self is just as natural as wanting to make one that looks completely different, so that you can be someone else.

Well my dwarf pretty much has the darkest skin color available and that makes him look a lot like my Basque friend, and some paler Blacks, but pretty shy of the darkest African shades.

I didn't really care about his race though. I thought it looked good.

The part I find funny is that if there was any logic to fantasy worlds, dwarves would almost certainly all be albinos, or at least very pale. Most subtarrenean species are albino. They'd probably be blind too. The wonders of natural selection...

Did you even read my post? I mean seriously. I have no idea how you came to the conclusion that I was saying japanese or mexicans don't play games. It's just that 75 percent of america is made up of white people. That leads me to the opinion that the majority of  gamers here are white who want to play characters which resemble them.  Much like how in most films the main characters are white males.

I really don't know what planet you're living on but the majority of the western audience are white, because there's more white people living here.

Now I guess you could ask is it morally correct to want to play someone of your own skin colour and gender? I'm not sure, I just know that If I have a choice i'll make a character which looks like me.
