Getting a bit further I have noticed a few things. This game is indeed all about tactics. Using the environment is a must if you are going to play on hard. I like to turn off Tactics, aggro all the mobs, and then run back to a choke point where my mage is waiting with cone of cold. -Just one of the many things I've had to do to get by a fight...

There was this one random encounter battle in Denerim where there were 15 Archers there. The only way I figured out how to beat them was to run up a ramp out of LoS and aoe cold blast them, then I use critical strike abilities to one shot shatter them. It seems like the mage is by far leaps and bound the most useful class. That, and the tank of course.I reckon this game would be a breeze with 3 mages and a beefy tank.

What tactics have been most useful for you guys? There are many things to try, but I haven't gotten nearly far enough to analyze them. Do traps work wonders? I haven't spent many points in traps yet as I thought other abilities more useful thus far. I have found that CC abilities are a "maker-send". I can freeze units with my mage, force them to cower in fear, disorient or confuse them, pin them down with an archer, knock them over with a shield, or stun them with my rogue. These have all been instrumental abilities in my success so far. I usually send my tank in first (obviously) and cast vulnerability spells with my mage, then I kite them to a position where my mage can aoe a large sum of enemies. This always helps me come out victorious because once I start the whoop-ass session half of the mobs are half deaUsing items are also a must. I keep salves on my warrior always when the tough gets going. I have learned to always be prepared with several health and mana pots. As long as your mage(s) is alive, you can keep filling them with mana pots and healing/ doing devastating damage. I wish there were stamina pots as common as hp pots. My dual weild warrior often has no stamina left and it seems to cost way to much to use abilities with stamina based characters..

What is your guys take on tactics so far?

Retriraver, you can skip to the bottom if you want some of my advice directly to you.

Well this is my tid bit. Currently I'm 28 hours in, 20% in and main character is level 13. I've found that my ideal party setup is: Tank, DD(Duelist rogue in this case) Mage and healer. When I engage in a battle of a large sum of people, I like to run in with my rogue, firstly being her high evasion allows her to avoid incoming attacks and also she can detect traps, which makes it nice to be able to avoid. Nothing like running in, getting thrown to the ground and then fireballed to death. I follow up with gather the melee and I position them so they are in a line, roughly, and I place my mage on the side and Cone of Cold them. I've also specced into the lightning tree for the lightning cone and I spam that directly after. Then comes in positioning my rogue to backstab (a must) and I clear out all melee in most encounters before taking out ranged. The only case in which I don't focus melee is if their is a caster, healer or not. I prefer to freeze the melee, stun the caster and finish him off by the time the melee is unfrozen.

I found that before I got my healer I liked to take my rogue, equip a longbow and simply "pick off" mobs one at a time. At a long enough distance you wont draw links from the other mobs and so its a simple one on one ranged fight, in which I was always victorious. Also, in the more difficult boss fights in which you aren't concealed to a room and he/she has lots of backup, I like to grab the whole lot of them, run until I lose aggro on them all and then come back and pick up the stragglers.

Since I've gotten a healer though the entire game (on normal...) is becoming a breeze. I hardly use health pots, only when my healer is out of mana and I don't have lyrium pots. The game seems so much easier when you open your inventory and see 20+ health pots and you know you haven't bought or crafted any of them.

Also, another trick I picked up was using Blizzard, its the 4th ability in the frost tree for mages in which is does a HUGE aoe that does DoT and has the ability to freeze them. This makes using your ranged players to pick them off one by one a breeze and by the time the frost fades, you've taken out more than half the force and its a simple bag and tag fight after that.

The only problem I could foresee with using the full mage one tank party tactic would be for the long encounters, in which you can't rest in between. Once you have more than one mage, it seems that lyrium potions aren't as common as before because you're frequently using them. The counter to this I assume would be to pick up herbalism, but still I prefer the good ol' fashion party.

I used to raid a lot in WoW, and there are times I think of the combat in this game as controlling a WoW party in RTS form. (With lots of pause.)

Couple of things:

-Make sure the in game tactics are set up to not be stupid.

-LoS pull helps a lot in fighting the enemies a few at a time.

-Set up a trap just before opening a door and let all the enemies run to you. Especially a good idea if the room is trapped.

-In HUGE HUGE boss encounters, burning down the big boss seems to work best. Try to CC everything else. (On hard anyway.)

-Look at boss patterns. This one boss in the werewolf castle teleports away and spawns more skeletons every time you close to melee range. I just killed him with range.

-When you're out of healing, the person with aggro can kite while the ranged units attack them. (...doesn't work on everyone obviously...)

-On hard I find myself using the elemental salves in tough battles.

-Stealthed enemies can be frozen. (I tried the dust city boss fight for several hours before a I lucked out and this happened to the boss. Thought about turning the game down to normal, but that would mean the game is better then me, which I refuse to accept.)

-You can switch equipment in combat.

-I agree with the OP that the mage(s) seem to be the queen of battle. I'm rerolling one now so I can play around with multiple mages. Wondering if anyone has done arcane warrior or leveled up shapeshifter yet. They're both so cool, and yet why would I want to take my amazing casting unit and turn it into a melee-type (of which I have plenty.)

Wondering if anyone's done archery, I've not been too impressed with my Leiliana archer spec so far. (It's possible I just messed up the build--I'm prolly gonna use Zhevran on that playthrough.)

Depending on the situation, but mostly I use my rogue to pull and scout. Laying down a trap and waiting with my party around the corner. The tank will get them all and my party will kill them one by one. Ranged will be taken out by my rogue if there are not to many of them.

Pretty much the same as you, crowd control abilities are very useful for mages and cone of cold + shattering with crits and stonefist is a great way to get lots of kills and crowd control at the same time. I'm also getting a ton of use from glyph of repulsion for blocking up chokepoints or just dropping it under the party to keep melee enemies from attacking - you can walk through it and enemies usually can't.

I was in a raid guild in WoW:BC that 'finished' that expansion. I play this much the same was we would setup for those encounters because these battles are similar but more complex. I've been using a lot of crowd control, tank-healer setup, LoS to a choke point, kiting with lots of ranged party members, etc.

The one thing that made the game much easier for me was realizing how important flanking is. Before my guys would get torn up but now I keep moving them into better positions so they take far less damage.

My number 1 favourite "tactic"? Aggro-ing a couple of mobs in a group from as far away as possible. They'll tend to split off from the pack, letting me soften 'em up before I charge the rest. Has probably saved my butt more than a couple of times.

This game is no easy stuff, hey.

I have a question on this. I have the D2D CE version, but dang if I can find the players manual in the file. How in the name of the Maker do keep my party from always following me. I try to use the draw tactics but my party keeps following me and running into battle. I have tried putting them in cautious mode in tactics but they seem to run headlong into battle regardless. I just want them to stay put until I click on them and issue orders. Any help would be great.

Good stuff. Totally agree that CC skills are essential in this game, at least on Hard (PC).

One cheap thing you can do is Force Field your tank after he gets aggro. The enemy AI is too dumb to stop attacking. This has been so effective so far it makes me feel dirty.

As for traps, I've found the claw traps to be pretty good for disabling and dealing lots of damage to a single enemy before the start of a fight (plant it on a mage or something while stealthed). Have not been very impressed by the damage traps (shrapnel trap etc.) but admittedly I haven't tried the more advanced ones yet. I can see the monster lures and sleeping gas cloud traps being useful too.

Gee, I love to read about tactics, both the in game and these you called  "real" tactics (even if a bit OOC or metagaming) .. thanks for some extensive view on those too!

I would love to hear a bit about character development too, if you guys can. Search engine does not work in this forum. Just small tip on how to spend my level up points. Should I concentrate on a primary attribute or distribute them between secondaries too?

I'll be back in a few hours to check replies as it seems the forum has some major issues besides the search engine... lol

I have an arcane warrior right now at level 11. Tooled around with other PC types afterwards, all lower level , but the Mage just has the most tools. As this game is tactics, tools are the name of the game.

My AW mainly has CC spells. Once the flow of battle is established, she wades in DPSs the tanks target.

What I have found about character development. I think it better to simply make sure each one of your party members has abilities that will actually help in many instances since battles often range from 1 huge boss guy to a boss guy and many little guys to a crap load of little guys. I made sure that each of my guys are basically just really good at their role.

My rogue (I use Zevrin now) is for pure dps and occasional interupts when mobs get on my mage or something of that sort. I like the way Zevrin was developed when you first get him. Lots of dps abilities. No doubt an essential part of my party

My Tank is basically developed with as much defense as possible. I have shield wall and the aggro ability etc. I ignored the dps abilities you can spend points on in favor of defensive/shield abilities. Now my tank can take lots of damage off of my main party.

My main - dual weild warrior is speccd to also be pure dps. I spent most his points into dual weapons. He is a beast now when I activate momentum (faster attacks) and Berserk at the same time.

My mage I made sure to have a few aoe atacks right off the start, after one aoe (cone of cold) I loaded up the first few heal abilities. You will NEED heal unless you have some ongodly number of health pots.

Basically develope your characters to be strangest at the role you want them to play. Don't worry about little things at first like adding a few dps moves to your tank for instance. Some of his defensive moves play into a little dps anyways. Just specialize and make sure you have abilities to deal with any situation.

My ideal party setup is melee DD, tank, ranged DD (mage) and healer (backup ranged DD)

So my setup is:

Templar 3 points str till 38. 3 points constitution afterwards
Duelist Rogue 2 dex, 1 cunning. Dumping points as necessary into STR. Str becomes almost a useless talent upon getting lethality besides for using higher level swords.
Shapeshifter - 2 magic, 1 willpower
Healer(wtf is the name?) 2 spellpower 1 magic

I spent all my templar points in the beginning buffing up strength. This was so that I could have the T6 dragon armor as early as possible. I'm level 15 now and the dragon armor is OP. Tank hardly even gets close to dying, ever. Now I'm dumping all my points into constitution.

Rogue, points in dex first, then cunning, then strength (for expert dual wielding for t7 swords...about 31 str is required)

Mage, mass magic, second to willpower for the long mana consuming fights

Healer, mass willpower, second to spellpower.

If you really wanted to, like if you don't have the appropriate gear for spell resist, you can dip points into willpower. I avoid doing this on characters that could benefit more from other stats.

Changed party make-up to 2 mages (healer/party buffs)/(dps/CC) a duelist/assassin rogue and my main is a dual-wield Berserker/Champion. BTW warrior dps spec is amazing once you have enough points racked up into it. I have full berserk talents and am starting on the champion talents. I already have the most useful double weapon talents, so now I just pop berserk and annihilate everything in a matter of seconds while spamming heal with Morrigan and Wynne.

This is what I like to use:

1 Tank - my character

2 Ranged DD - Mages/Archers (mages are the best)

1 Healer

Have everyone hold position in the back, gather aggro with the tank. Drop a nice AOE spell right on top of the tank as he is running back with the mobs, so all the stupid melee NPCs have to run through it. If there are casters present, then I micro a bit and push the healer forward, so the tank doesn't get knock-locked and pecked to death.

I hadn't really thought of using a rouge and backstabbing people, I might have to try that. I was using the archer because I didn't have to micro him as much mages or melee dd.

Truthfully? More often than not it's rather simple for a lot of fights I suppose since my main is a mage.  Earthquake + fireball + inferno + run to a choke point + cone of cold = use other characters to clean up leftovers.

If they're immune to a certain element I just throw other spells into the mix. I more or less have 3 out of the four primal abilities maxed so between myself and Morrigan I pretty much have all the primal spells available. If there isn't any obstacles readily available then I concentrate on burning down ranged asap.

DPS = damage per second

Aggro is a term from MMO's meaning the aggression an enemy has for a specific character. I think the DA:O relative term is threat; threat is the amount a character threatens the enemy, thereby attracting its attention and attacks. Aggro is the enemy behavior of reacting to threat.

My strategy is actually pretty simple: Let Shale take all the beatings, while Wynne heals him and I kill whatever isn't looking at him at any given moment.

Liliana sits around and is mostly useless until I need a chest opened or a trap disarmed (Though she seems to be less worthless now that I've given her Marjorlaine's Recurve. Plus, she's hot. So there's that.)

I've changed my party make-up again. two mages, two warriors. I decided to add Sten to my group and give him a nice 2h T6 axe I think I got off of a boss fight. Sten does crazy damage but he swings so slow! Even so, Sten in the shizznit with certain abilities. I want to get him into berserking so he can go crazy. I decided I didn't need a rogue since all the chests usually contain are crap items... New strategy: heal with the mages, berserk with the warriors. If nothing else, it will be fun :P

Heh, yeah that's basically why I have her around as well far as for opening locked items.  She's definitely the weak link but with the other two I have, Morrigan and Allistair, in the group she doesn't really have to do much besides unlock stuff for me and point out trap locales.
