I used to raid a lot in WoW, and there are times I think of the combat in this game as controlling a WoW party in RTS form. (With lots of pause.)

Couple of things:

-When you're out of healing, the person with aggro can kite while the ranged units attack them. (...doesn't work on everyone obviously...)

Just wanted to post in and say I was shocked this worked when I did it in the ogre battle. I was just scared of dying and just had my main run in circles. :P

Anyways alot of great advice in this thread and I dont know if this has been posted, but with your mage certain spells dont require LoS.  Like using "Hex,Winter's Grasp, Drain Life"  will work and is a great combo

Edit: Oh yea my tactics involve:

Main- 2h using alot of Sweeps and pummels for CC
Alister-tank; mostly have Wall/threat on all the time.
Wynee-Healer/Buffer with alittle CC with glyphs & petrify
Morrigan- DD. with some Horror/Mind blast for CC

I reckon this game would be a breeze with 3 mages and a beefy tank.

It is. This is my usual set up for a pull.
1) Run your tank into the middle of a pack and use Threaten.
2) Start 2 AoE spells (Blizzard/Tempest) from 2 mages
3) Just before they go off, use Earthquake from 3rd mage.
4) Have 1 mage cast Force Field on the tank.
5) Others can use Chain Lightning or stack more Tempests.
6) Everything dies and tank walks away with minor damage that easily healed.

Set up time is short and the damage is massive. I think it takes longer to loot the bodies than to actually fight sometimes. :o

It's almost cheating.

Sadly, I feel that mages are overpowered. So, I use a party of three tanks and one rogue for tarps. I haven't used a potion yet...

If I'm inside a building I always send Griffon(my dog) ahead first into the next room while the rest of the party holds position. If I'm in an area that can be blocked off with repulsion then I cast repulsion while calling Griffon(my dog) back to me and prison one of the enemies that gets knocked back and virulent bomb him, normal bomb another target, then paralysis explosion the group of them and wait.

In outside areas I always have Griffon(my dog) selected and leading the party. When we encounter enemies I hold position, send Griffon(my dog) to charge an enemy and gather up the rest. Once they're in a nice group I have dog stun them all and run while I drop a repulsion glyph and set it off with a paralysis glyph. After a prison and two bombs later and we move on.

If Griffon(my dog) ever gets caught in a paralysis explosion and is too close to survive the bombs then I force field him.

If I'm ever in a situation where bombs are too risky I disable 3 targets using prison, forcefield, and paralyze glyph while falling back into a tight group so that I can stagger area stuns from Griffons(my dog) howl, Morrigans mind blast and my mind blast followed by a repulsion for an aoe knockdown.

Things will become even better once I have mass paralyze. It will allow me to set up a paralysis explosion even when swarmed. I'm thinking mass paralyze, group falls back, bomb two targets, paralysis explosion followed by clean up.

I have a question on this. I have the D2D CE version, but dang if I can find the players manual in the file. How in the name of the Maker do keep my party from always following me. I try to use the draw tactics but my party keeps following me and running into battle. I have tried putting them in cautious mode in tactics but they seem to run headlong into battle regardless. I just want them to stay put until I click on them and issue orders. Any help would be great.

Two mages both healers with good CC, and two tanks. I just send the tanks to the mobs have one of my healers working straight off of tactics, and my PC (mage) bounces between CC/healing/taking out the toughest baddie. Works well for me. Mages kick ass in this game, so many different paths to victory.

I usually freeze any elite or higher level characters with Force Field from my support mage (Hero), freeze ranged and spell casters with frost spells with Morrigan, use my DPS with bow to pick off from afar while enemies start approaching. Switch Shale to Stone Hearted mode, switch DPS to Dual Swords when close range enemies are in range. My support mage casts some support spell (whatever the situation calls for) then switches to an animal shape. Morrigan just casts more spells. When closed range enemies are down to two I switch Shale to Pummeling Fists, let the DPS pick off enemies from afar, switch support mage back, and again pick enemies from afar. Seems to work well. Too many mage enemies can be annoying though.

I find poultices to be cheap and easy enough that Wynne is optional in my group. Being a dwarf with 361 Hit points at level 15 means I laugh off alot of spells and damage. I go full tilt for the mages/biggest threat.

Script Morrigan to freeze me as often as possible with cone of cold, and Allistair to make wise-ass comments. Lelianna to open boxes and spot traps right after I blunder into them.

Wow, those are some awesome tips! Thanks!

My PC is a human warrior with 2-handed specialization and I pumped STR from start, a little DEX (it does affect To Hit % right?) and I have no idea what's max STR but at lvl 11 now he's got 42 and a nice 2-handed sword from mage's tower. He can tank pretty well and I'm still waiting my pre-ordered CE edition to be released here so I can get my d/l'able items, etc. (friday the 13th... nice date for a horror game release)

I hope that my party set up can go on till the end of this first run. I have my PC and Alister as tank/front line and Morrigan and Leliana for support, while Mori can heal too and she's... cold... If there are enough levels ahead I'd like to try maxxing fire and some mind spell trees.

Leliana is my specialized archer and so far she's doing fine with some nice shots and valour chant...I think she's a better pickpocket than a safe ******. She almost doesn't fail at the first and gets me mroe goods than chests, but I'm still early in the game I guess (lvl 10 most of them) and I have Zev and Sten in camp.

Wynne is not an option since she's pretty much dead! She went aggro on me... bad choice of words at the tower or those two women weren't meant to go together... I don't think I had much of an option there... When I tried to have her in the party, the other chick freaked out and boom, fight was on... I'll have to live with that. =)

Retriraver, you can skip to the bottom if you want some of my advice directly to you.

Well this is my tid bit. Currently I'm 28 hours in, 20% in and main character is level 13. I've found that my ideal party setup is: Tank, DD(Duelist rogue in this case) Mage and healer. When I engage in a battle of a large sum of people, I like to run in with my rogue, firstly being her high evasion allows her to avoid incoming attacks and also she can detect traps, which makes it nice to be able to avoid. Nothing like running in, getting thrown to the ground and then fireballed to death. I follow up with gather the melee and I position them so they are in a line, roughly, and I place my mage on the side and Cone of Cold them. I've also specced into the lightning tree for the lightning cone and I spam that directly after. Then comes in positioning my rogue to backstab (a must) and I clear out all melee in most encounters before taking out ranged. The only case in which I don't focus melee is if their is a caster, healer or not. I prefer to freeze the melee, stun the caster and finish him off by the time the melee is unfrozen.

I found that before I got my healer I liked to take my rogue, equip a longbow and simply "pick off" mobs one at a time. At a long enough distance you wont draw links from the other mobs and so its a simple one on one ranged fight, in which I was always victorious. Also, in the more difficult boss fights in which you aren't concealed to a room and he/she has lots of backup, I like to grab the whole lot of them, run until I lose aggro on them all and then come back and pick up the stragglers.

Since I've gotten a healer though the entire game (on normal...) is becoming a breeze. I hardly use health pots, only when my healer is out of mana and I don't have lyrium pots. The game seems so much easier when you open your inventory and see 20+ health pots and you know you haven't bought or crafted any of them.

Also, another trick I picked up was using Blizzard, its the 4th ability in the frost tree for mages in which is does a HUGE aoe that does DoT and has the ability to freeze them. This makes using your ranged players to pick them off one by one a breeze and by the time the frost fades, you've taken out more than half the force and its a simple bag and tag fight after that.

The only problem I could foresee with using the full mage one tank party tactic would be for the long encounters, in which you can't rest in between. Once you have more than one mage, it seems that lyrium potions aren't as common as before because you're frequently using them. The counter to this I assume would be to pick up herbalism, but still I prefer the good ol' fashion party.

I'm using earthquake and when most of enemies down i'm using chain lightning or the the 3rd lightning
spell (dont remember  the name).

Great stuff guys. Here's my tactics now that I'm much, much further into the game and have had a chance to mature some of my charcters.

I almost always use my stealth rogue to head the party. I walk into a room and assess the situation. I have Morrigan cast blizzard while I wait to cast earthquake with Wynne. As soon as they start moving around, I quake them to the ground and cast the AOE lighting. All the while I have ranged weapons equipped and hammer them all with arrows. Usually I do this all outside a choke point. When enemies get through the blizzerd, I have Morrigan cone of cold the chokepoint and lightning cone them. Everything is usually dead by now. -Oh ya, can forget the vulnerability hex. With that and aoe magic, things die way too fast almost.

For beefier mobs I usually just freeze a group of enemies, stone fist one, critical strike another, Vulnerability hex, aoe cone spells, any stragglers I put to sleep with Morrigan and then use horror (doing this does massive spirit damage to the sleeping targets). My main is berserking and hammering the main target, my rogue is on CC duty ganking those that go for Morrigan, and Wynne is healing/ buffing heroic offense, earthquakes etc.

For big bosses I tend to like to kite them around like an idiot and ranged attack them. It's piece of cake really. -Especially if I cast vulnerability hex and have Morrigan and Wynne using frost shock, lightning, arcane missile, fire etc.

Put all of your players on hold and scout out any big rooms in stealth and then make informed decisions on tactics from there.

(One thing that really pisses me off is that you cant ambush boss types in this game. It just pulls all your characters in the room and it like... oh hi! were here! completly killing the rogue stealth aspect)

If theres a lot of people in a large room I will just lay down a blizzard/earthquake and wait.

In the mean time I set up a tank line out side the front door with maybe some traps and pulling the bows out.

When blizzard stops it becomes much easier to pick up lower health npcs.

Always...always....always get your rogue into the back of the enemy. Extra damage output is insane.

Cone of cold + any critical spells/skills is useful for not wasting time on the higher healthed npcs.

I would say any damage you can do before the mobs reach you is good damage.

Preperation is key and I thinks thats the only tactic you really need.

Same here.

"Lets put the glass cannon mage right in front of the boss with the giant weapon and put the tank in the very back and have the whole party scrambling for the first few seconds of every plot encouner!"

First off thanks to the OP for discussing battle strategies for help or just for information that could one day come in handy. So many ppl complaining. As for me I change my part depending on the battle. Usually me(1H tank), Alistair, Leliana, & Morrigan do fine on hard in almost in any situation but for the juggernaut armor tombstone quests in the Bercilian Forest & the Dark Alley quest for the Keening I add to replace Leliana with Wynne to survive. Most of the time I shield bash with my tank, then aggro with taunt, do some serious damage with Alistair, crit from behind with Leliana or wear down enemies from afar with arrows, & finally flank with my mage to freeze enemies & in large crowds I usually put a few ppl to sleep until Alistair can finish off a couple then change targets.

Been working for 52 hours now at lv16!!!!! I think mages are over powered in the game but that is the setting after all. Magic is a scary & very unstable unsafe thing so i understand but I admit I am annoyed at myself when I fail to notice a mage immediately. lol.

I have a great time pulling enemies into traps at choke points.

I have Shale use his group buffing/enemy debuffing form, have Morrigan (who is heavily set towards Entropy) stand back at the edge of the field, so she's out of close range combat but still getting the benefits, have my 2-hander specialized Warrior stay close to Shale, and send a rogue stealth forward to draw in enemies with the bow.

Once I lure them into Shale's effective range I just have the other 3 rip the drawn in enemies apart. Rinse/Repeat, and I can flush out huge groups of enemies this way. I think it's a pretty reasonable way to do it also, I mean why fight the enemy on their terms when I can make them fight on mine?

Since Alistair is a Templar, the first AI tactic I set up for him is to go kill mages. That has been a highly useful thing for me. My character is a beast with a 1h/shield (shield skills rock) and I can hold the line while he knocks out any enemy magic. Then I can hop into Morrigan and apply damage as suits the situation.

Since I dumped my Rogue archer, I'm actually a lot less 'tactical'. AI tactics work really well.

Greetings friends!

I have the same question that skippyray has (well one of them anyway). With the console version, is there any way to make your party wait for you while you take one character up to pull or stealth a mob? No matter what setting (defensive, cautious etc) they always seem to come along. Many thanks for any help or tips!

You need to have them hold, which is an option on the wheel under "advanced".

Tbh even on hard there is no need for a "tank". Just have a guy with 200+ hp and he'll do.

You click on HOLD, which is the icon below all your character/party portrait, or you can press [H]. This toggle between Free Moving and Freeze/Hold position.
