They're generally quite good about filling in gaps like that, especially in a universe as insanely detailed as the Mass Effect one. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until ME3 comes out and we can perhaps get more information. And plot hole or not, the fact remains that he's clearly capable of much more physically taxing activities now.
Just out of curiosity, besides the Vrolik's, why would you have a problem with Joker being a romance option? I mean, I don't really like Garrus as an LI, but other people did so good for them; I just... don't flirt with Garrus. Why couldn't people who don't see Joker as a romantic interest simply take the non-flirting options with him and, you know, not hook up with him?
I don't really have a problem with it although really what would the point be. Why do people need everyone in the Mass effect universe to be an LI? To me it is such a small part of the story but seems to have taken off as the biggest aspect of the game. Either way though it wouldn't bother me if they left well enough alone or added him as an LI.
Ohhh okay that actually makes a fair amount of sense. And I can kind of sympathize with you, I think BioWare went way overboard on the number of LIs in ME2, and none of them were all that appealing. But I think it makes at least some sense for Joker to be a possible love interest, far more sense than some other options. (I'm looking at you, Thane.) He's been a constant in both games-- one of a very few constants, actually-- and he and Shepard have a history and friendship. It'd be nice to see a romance grow out of a friendship, as opposed to "oh hi you're cute flirt flirt wanna screw?". You know, something a little more realistic and natural.
Plus I'm a total sucker for pilots. And guys with incredible senses of humor.
