We've got an attachment to a fictional character. Someone who we know intimately because he is scripted that way. That's what makes him flawed. We also know we'll never meet him in real life, and that no matter how much we wish it weren't so, it is so. We know it is. We know we won't have him, but that is part of the allure. It is similar to people who worship celebrities. With knowing that we'll never be with him, we can be certain that he'll never REALLY break our hearts. We can stay out of the line of fire when it comes to love, because of our attachment to virtual men or, indeed, women. That doesn't mean that we don't meet or socialise with real people, and it doesn't mean that we can't grow fond of a real human being. We like the characters in video-games because they have voices, personalities and very often good looks. That's a better deal than what a lot of us will ever cut in real life... ¬_¬
Now consider the girls who are out there, on the scene with "real" people. Think of all the effort it takes to fit in, stay cool and with the times. Remember that thing called a "reputation?" They have to worry about those as well. But it doesn't end there. You play life the "sane" way and you will doubtlessly be exposed to all kinds of substances and situations that are bad for you. Game-characters tend to be just a little less judgemental and very much less dangerous. *cough*
