I already did the quest for him, have him in the party and whatnot, I just got done doing the Circle of Magi as a Human Rogue, the bug is that everytime I try to talk to the character, it goes back to how the quest was, but in the other area, sending the character into some noclip-like area. It makes it seem like I haven't done the quest at all, yet I already did it. Any ideas for this? I mean it doesn't bug me a lot, but it is odd that I can't talk to him at all without it doing like the start-quest for him at the camp.

Yeah got the same. I did the quest for him and have done circle, forest and dwarves and large chunk of redcliffe. I checked questlog and it says its completed (interestingly the guy who starts wardens keep has reappeared at the camp and is offering quest to do it again despite my completing it.........). I checked to see if i could redo shales quest at village but its all completed.
I go to talk to him and it sends me to a noclip area.
I checked a save from many hours earlier and it seems he isn't bugged but i really don't want to go back that far.....

I completed the quest for shale a while ago, now when i click on him it (in camp not tried outside camp yet) sends me to a empty area (circular if that means anything). I had just completed dwarf city (already done forest, circle of magi, and most of redcliffe). Checked a save from a long time ago (10hrs+) and could still talk to him (in camp).
Also noticed that I can apparently redo wardens keep as levi has reappeared at camp offering quest. I'm guessing that they are linked. Yet In questlog that are both still completed......
Any ideas. (i do recall seeing game ask me to restart game so i could use dlc content earlier today, despite me not downloading any).

Have the same issue, Circle of Magi seems to be a common link as it was after that Shale bugged for me too. Not a gamebreaker but it has stopped me from using him further.

From what i can gather from reading other threads mentioning this issue, the problem isn't so much a trigger from quests and the like but instead is something to do with player becoming temporarily logged off during play.
I have since noticed that a lot of the extra content has been 'reset' eg. i had a helm called bergens honor that disappeared (at same time as shale and wardens keep screw up it seems) but has now reappeared at merchant in party camp....(i do have the option to be 'always logged in' ticked)
BIOWARE = Either remove the fact that we must stay logged in to access content that we have already officially downloaded, OR have it so that if we become logged off in-game that a message box will appear (eg. pause game and box with 'You are logged out please login again or have broken DLC content'), so that we don't find out hours of gameplay later. While it does not break the game, it does mean that Wardens keep and Shale are bugged.... badly.
I assume that there will be future DLC's released, and having a situation where DLC content is broken as soon as connection is lost (on your end) is not going to encourage sales of them.

I think I remember a account error message mid way through the mages tower, and had this bug from then on.
You can still give him gifts at camp, and use as a tank, but there are no new conversations, quests or items.

Have you been using the Toolset at all? If so, follow the steps outlined there under the section labeled "Fix for strange issues with my game such as scripts not firing or party interactions not working and 'Module will not load'" Hope that helps.

after talking to him in the fade and releasing him from his dream, he was not selectable anymore for me in the party menu, its just a dark shadow and when I click him he doesnt activate, anyone know if I can get him back? I like his dry humour!

i have the same problem too...even my Bergens honor helm was removed from Alistair, and i have in my inventory again the Grimoire of the Frozen wastes..the other DLC did got this bug, i ams till wearing the blood dragon armor, i and have not altered my game in any way possible and i have not used the tool set...

I did the Stone Prisoner quest yesterday evening, finished it and recruited Shale. I talked to him and gave him some gifts also last night. Then today , if I try to talk to him, I get sent to a buggy empty area. Another thing is that I couldn't accept the Wardens keep quest today either, not if I was logged in.

Yeah I have the same problem, I made a short youtube clip of it... but it's not only Shale that is bugged for me, Warden's Keep disappeared aswell... and yes I completed it on the char I'm playing T_T..

sounds like Bioware's copy protection scheme for DLC is causing the problem!

I also have the problem with shale. It is only shale so far, I hadn't done the warden's keep quest yet. The stone prisoner quest is in the completed quests section, but it says "The control rod didn't work, find out why" instead of "you recruited shale to your party etc.". It's like the game thinks I haven't done the quest. When I go back to the town where shale was, there is even a plot marker on the map there even though there are no NPCs.

Does anyone know if you could force the quest to be completed from console or command prompt? Maybe Shale would be normal after that because now game seems to think that you haven't done the quest at all.

3. Downloaded and installed the builder, but did not launch (and therefore did not use) it.
4. Started the Orzammar quests
5. First noticed that clicking on Shale results in the quest dialog from Honnleath ("Activate the golem/Leave it alone") and all non-PC assets are not rendered. E.g., am looking at a black screen save for the PCs and some of the backdrop imagery.
6. Reload a saved game to return to correct gameplay.
(ver 1.01)

OK, I got him to work! Activate console as stated in thread http://social.biowar...58/index/275974 and use Shale's debug script (runscript zz_shl_debug). After that, choose "Hire Shale". After that he should be able to speak again. If it works for you thank TallBearNC in the original thread.
