Have you? The Inventory in ME is ****. 99% of the items you get are nothing more than vendor-trash in a game where money doesn't even matter, and on the higher diffulties, every enemy but snipers and geth hoppers just charge your position, making the largely broken sticky-cover completely pointless. And there was no reason to put anything other than First Aid/Medical interfaces into your armor unless you liked using medigel. Squad members also rarely followed "hold position" orders if issued before combat, trodding stupidly in afterwards and spoiling any attempt at a tactical ambush.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 are good games, but compared to its sequel, the first game's management aspects were a chore.

what list are you drawing from? The same source that identifies the obvious minority of ME2 complainers as being the "majority"?

Inventory was most definately on the list, for good reason.

Why is there so much complaining? It's a game. You either enjoy it, or you don't and you wasted your money. It's simple. No need to tear it down because it doesn't live up to your expectations. If you want a "pure" RPG experience, go play pen and paper D&D.

I played Mass Effect probably in the upwards of 40-50 times. Inventory was horrible. only maybe 3-4 lines of items were even remotely worth the inventory space. way too much vendor fodder and time spent cleaning inventory. Combat was wonky, and somewhat cheesy.




ME2s Combat system and weapons system was alot better. For once i didnt waste time selling pointless **** i didnt even need. Alot of AMMO was useless, weapon selection was useless also. The combat was  annoying i would with wonky.

First 5 minutes of  ME2 combat gameplay i was loving it .

So instead of improving them they removed them.  Good call.  Hugely successful game and you gut it and strip it down to 1/4 its potential to release a sequel.  ME2 is like if Transformers 2 didn't have Bumblebee in it...  Sure it's still transformers and still good but it woulda been better if they kept Bumblebee in it.

Do you get it?

Of course no one liked the vast empty spaces on planets and the broken ass mako.  But the issues were not so severe that they warrented removal from the game.  They could have easily been improved.

And yes I played the hell out of Mass Effect like millions of other people did and loved it.   You know that pile of millions that's bigger than the smaller pile that are playing and loving ME2...

People aren't satisfied with that and want to air every grievance against their supposedly holy format of RPG's  The fact is even within the RPG realm there is so much diversity of experience.

Oblivion is a decent game with mods, for example.  But if you play an Elder Scrolls game for deep character interaction or story, you are really playing the wrong game.  The game is all about roaming free, getting loot, and becoming a powerful character.  Does its lack of "deep story" and choices make it less of an RPG?  I wouldn't think so.

Now look at something like Mass Effect 2.  It has shooter elements, yes, but ultimately the game is rooted in the interaction with your squad and the choices you make during your missions.  There isn't any real "PHAT LOOT" and it is not very free roaming, but it makes up for that story wise.

My point is there are a variety of experiences in the RPG realm.  If you don't like the ME experience, then you are free to explore any of the dozen of other types.

Yes useless inventory was on the Mass Effect 1 complaints list, we got TOO many items.

So was the repetetive terrain and empty planets.

And yes, the AI was poor as well.

But I'll be damned if I ever saw any large group of people who complained about it not being a RPG. The feel of Mass Effect 1 was amazing. it's that feeling you can't really explain, it was there.

Incorrect. The horrible inventory management and mass amounts of useless items you amassed were very high on the list.
Good job morphing the facts to back your stance up though.

What a foolish last line.  Are all RPG players so smug?  No, YOU DON'T KNOW that more people are not enjoying ME 2 as a matter of fact.  This forum is not the end all be all of the gaming industry.  Some of the harshest reviews of ME 2 still gave it a 9/10, so what does that tell you?

If Bioware had given a new, separate name to the guns every time you researched a damage, ammo, or accuracy upgrade, no one would be complaining about the inventory.



That change would be entirely aesthetic, with no effect on the game at all, but would effectively silence many "inventory" critics. So you can see how "valid" their claims are.



Think about it. Damage/Accuracy/Ammo before "overheat" were the only things that separated different guns in ME1. If every time you researched a heavy pistol damage upgrade, the name of your heavy pistol changed, and critics recognized that as a "different gun" just as it was in ME1 when there was a damage improvement, they wouldn't know the difference.



Instead, Bioware preserves the idea that each of the 19 gun types (instead of 4) has its own unique feel, design, and use, and that all those stat improvements are done with research instead, and expected their fans to see how the system (which is essentially the same but immensely improved) just uses new nomenclature. Unfortunately, only some of us see it, and the rest think the inventory is gone and nonsensically blame EA for an "inventory problem" that doesn't exist.

"Bigger than the smaller pile" so eloquent. I'm sure that has nothing to do with ME1's sales figures having a several year head start and ME2 barely being out longer than a week.

They removed them because they were pointless features. If something adds nothing to the game and you remove it, then you lose nothing from the game.

Do you get it?

They altered Armor Upgrades into the armor system as a whole, letting you pick and choose different parts that would boost how you personally play the game. The ammo upgrades were changed into ammo powers, still working the same way but a lot more useful in changing situations. In both of these cases, it's a streamlining of pointless tedium from the first one. That's called improvement, not removal.

Like I said, I play the two types of games expecting two very different things.  If I held the Elder Scrolls to the same standard that I'd expect from, say Dragon Age, then of course I am going to be disappointed.

I honestly think some of the things being written by some people are doing it because they are bored. Some of the things being written is making me laugh alot its just horse **** what people are coming up with.

Everything that i wanted in this game i got, however, as i stated in my first post i would have liked to have seen some of my descions in the first game have greater effect. The way it was talked up during the interviews an stuff made me expect massive things.

Its nothing serious at all i still love the game by far.

It was the hugeness.  Mass Effect made the gamespace it played out in feel overwhelmingly huge.  ME2 is just not epic enough and it could have been.

The rest of you trying to argue with what I didn't say instead of paying attention to what I "DID" say,  1 2 and 3 were not the whole list nor did I suggest they were.  The Make, AI, and repetative terrain (planets and bases) were the "TOP 3" not the "ONLY" 3.  So enough with the "You lie inventory was on the list too crap".  We know the inventory was cumbersome.  That has NOTHING to do with the actual point.  Stop doodging with stupid and think your way through a responce.

Think about it. Damage/Accuracy/Ammo before "overheat" were the only things that separated different guns in ME1. If every time you researched a heavy pistol damage upgrade, the name of your heavy pistol changed, and critics recognized that as a "different gun" just as it was in ME1 when there was a damage improvement, they wouldn't know the difference.

Instead, Bioware preserves the idea that each of the 19 gun types (instead of 4) has its own unique feel, design, and use, and that all those stat improvements are done with research instead, and expected their fans to see how the system (which is essentially the same but immensely improved) just uses new nomenclature. Unfortunately, only some of us see it, and the rest think the inventory is gone and nonsensically blame EA for an "inventory problem" that doesn't exist.

QFT, I did try pointing out the whole upgrades thing to the TrollExile earlier, but I guess he is too stupid to understand.

I find it odd that some people take such issue with Bioware abstracting away character stats. Yes, it does make the game somewhat more simplistic but it also is more engrossing. You don't have to constantly worry about managing your inventory that can magically hold hundreds of guns and pieces of armor. You don't have to worry about an over abundance of stats. Instead you can improve a few abilities that are immediately tangible and upgrade your equipment using a mining and money metaphor. When you go to get clothing you think, how much money is that or how would I make that. You don't think oh boy I'd like that but I have to burn this one article of clothing because I can only carry 99 shirts at once since I don't have enough str.

Fact of the matter is, Mass Effect successfully meets the requirements to be an "RPG", thus no matter what internet jackasses say, it is an "RPG" and not a "Shooter".

ME 1 was hardly overwhelmingly huge when in fact most of the hugeness was represented in driving on planets with the Mako. It is true, you explore less planets in ME 2, but you undercut your point when you mentioned the Mako as outside of those missions, what "huge" and varied experience was there?



ME 1 was actually very short if you just wanted to beat it. Basically, you do Eden Prime, the Citadel, the immediately knock out Noveria, Feros and then Virmire. Bam, you are at the end game and probably have about an hour or so of gaming left. So basically five locations and you can finish the game?



In ME 2, if you try to rush the game most of your squad will die and leave you with a very bad save game.

Here, here!  Seriously, if you have a peoblem with ammo, learn to place shots in the head region. You seriously can go through an entire level and Keep most guns full.  I only really run out on my Widow. But then I use the Sub-m with the 50 round clip.
