I'll bite! Current Shepard is paragon, and staying loyal to Kaidan. I liked Kaidan from the start; regardless of what went down on Horizon, he was the first person with Shepard on a mission. He had her back the whole time.
I can kind of forgive him for getting too close to the beacon and setting off a huge chain of events, but he did have the good grace to look worried about what he'd done.
As a migraine sufferer myself, I feel for Kaidan, too. There's a lot of things I can't do because of migraines, and it impacts my life constantly. For someone to actually work with that and keep at it says a lot about how much guts a person has, at least from where I stand. It can be crippling, and it takes someone with a lot of fortitude to cope with really bad ones. He could be resentful about being stuck in the Alliance because there's not much else an L2 can do, but he doesn't. He focuses on what he can do. I like that.
I admit I played through ME1 constantly bugging him to see if any other conversation options started up. He felt like a stabilizing influence, someone who mostly kept a cool head.
As for Horizon, my Shepard is from the sole survivor background. Akuze. She's got a lot of reasons to hate Cerberus. Why would Kaidan think any differently? Hell, knowing all that, he probably figures she's taken complete leave of her senses. But desperate times lead to desperate measures sometimes, and from someone with a strong Alliance background, that's likely harder to understand. It's probably why there's not human Spectres all over the place - all the ones with training are probably too used to working within the rules. I can understand Horizon from that point of view. Heck, I actually liked the scene on Horizon. It drove home how really screwed up it is to be working for Cerberus, how desperate the situation is that it's a necessity. It made it feel real, like there was a real mission, and real things at stake.
Then again, caveat: I'm a writer, and I love torturing characters.
