Quality over quantity. Think I read a discussion a while ago with someone from BW who asked if we would rather see multiple romances (people were complaining about just getting 1 LI) or 1 more detailed LI. The majority of the folk in that thread wanted more options and hated the LI they were given.

You can never please everybody, that is a problem ofcourse, and I think that by giving us a lot of options in ME2 they are catering to the "Gimme more romances, gimme alien romances, I wanna shag the entire universe" crowd and that's fine. I am hoping the original romance caters to people like me, who prefer a long lasting LI (Kaidan) instead of a quick tumble between the sheets. At the end of the day most got what they wanted after two chapters, well, there are always those who are never satisfied and those who did not get what they want (gay community) but that's an entirely different topic.

I was disappointed with Kaidan's role in ME2 but am still hopeful they will make it up to us in ME3 after satisfying the fans who hated the original LI's. (can never truly happen but hey, they tried)

It's just too bad they put all their focus on the new characters and choose a rather easy way out of dealing with the original LI's.

Personally I doubt that any of the ME2 LI's will have a large role in ME3. Jacob was a booty call, nothing more, he makes that perfectly clear and the whole 'relationship' lacks any form of emotion or depth imo.

While Thane had depth, shep spends the majority of the game holding his hands with the same repeating dialogue until the end sexy time which isn't much of sexy time at all. The tears and single kiss didn't do anything for me other than making me want to comfort the poor guy. Thane was designed as THE alien romance for femsheps and yet he's dying and that pretty much sums up the whole romance angle. There is no tension, no real flirting, just deep talks and holding hands.

Garrus to me is just Bioware pleasing the fans who cried out for his romance all over the forums. He's cool, his romance is cute but it hardly qualifies as a romance. Again both parties make clear it's just a little passion before the suicide mission and again it feels like an intimate friendship to me.

Kaidan gave the feeling of being genuinely interested in the woman behind the commander from the start. His fumbling on the citadel, the way he smiled at her and their conversations felt like their relationship naturally grew into something more. There was tension the ME2 LI's lacked with a scene like the Joker interrupt before kissing etc etc.
I missed that in ME2 and felt no anticipation what so ever with the LI's.

Because Kaidan was the 'only' obvious male romance option for femsheps in ME1, their relationship was much more subtle and genuine imo. Even though it felt as if the romance in ME1 was a tad bit lacking, compared to the 'depth' of the ME2 LI's, it's really wonderfully done. Even the scene before Ilos was more about finally giving into feelings and making love to confirm their relationship while they still had the chance. It never gave the feeling it was a quick booty call. (like Jacob with his prize dialogue)

The fact that I created a femshep that looked nothing like my canon Shep from ME1 just to try a romance with Thane says enough. My canon Shep is with Kaidan and no matter how many times I try to romance the ME2 LI's, it's just not working for me. Bioware created a lovely romance option with Kaidan, who's horribly under appreciated and tossed aside as boring by a lot of people. (a lot of the comments back then had a lot to do with Carth still being fresh in people's minds and the whole comparing thing)

The only fear I still have for ME3 is the fact that there are SO many romance options now and if they want to continue them all in ME3, it's going to mean they will have to put a lot of work into them to pull of any form of closure and since romances are just a small percentage of the game, I fear it will be at the expense of any real depth. 5 for each gender is a lot of content to work with, not to mention the fact all ME2 LI's could have possibly died in players runthroughs and see what that did to the ME1 LI's in ME2  I mean why create indepth relationships with people who could be dead in the majority of the playerbase?
Again it's why I believe ME2 romance option, some of them at least, will just move on in ME3 and that's why, imo, most ME2 romaces are so obviously 'flings'. Well for femsheps anyway, or so it felt to me, with perhaps the exclusion of Thane.

Just wording my thoughts here ;)

Truest post EVER.  Well said.

I agree.  Most of the romance options in ME2 seemed pretty shallow to me.  Something to pass the time between act 1 and act 3.

I had one Fem shep carry over who didn't have any romance and one that sacraficed Kaidan (vert hard to do but for this Shep it was the right thing to do) so I have a couple of carryovers who can have a new relationship without the guilt factor.  I will probably take one of my Kaidan girls and let Thane comfort me after Kaidan tells me off, but only one.  All the others will wait for him to realize his mistake.

I talked to Jacob once and got the casual feeling and later got the idea he and Miranda had a history.  Talked to Garrus which was fun but we parted friends and then talked to Thane and ended up with him becuase he was the one I felt most comfortable with.  The story was not bad and I liked the holding hands.  But he died.  This poor Shep has bad luck with relationships.  Jack also died in this play thru, but while I felt sorry for her, there is nothing about her I find appealing.  Just me.

I hope ME3 has the same quality of conversations as DA.  I really like the way their conversations go.  I would have liked to see an option to reply to Kaidan's (or Ash's) e-mail.  3 options, a positive, nuteral or ignore option.

Allready looking forward to ME3 and haven't done all of the things you can do in ME2.

I admit, I hadn't played KOTOR when I played ME, and when I did get around to it, every time I heard Carth I was all "OMG it's Kaidan, squee!"

Hehe, same for me, but reversed. I'd played KotOR first and the very first line Kaidan voiced in ME, I was like, "Wait a minute..." and then went running to look up the VA, and was like, "Squee, it's Carth!!" xD

FINALLY!  Someone who had the same reaction as me, I absolutely adored Carth Onasi.  He was one of my favorite characters in a video game EVER, paranoid ridiculousness and all.  I was instantly in love when I heard Kaidan with his voice.  Then Kaidan turned out to be this amazing character that even topped Carth.  Win!

I don't think your alone with this.  I thought Carth was the best of everything and I know he had his own fan girl base on the forums.  His humor, his intensity, I used to save right before talking to him so I could repeat it with every option and then repeat it with whatever I liked best.

My husband actually did act a bit jealous becuase he would hear me giggling.  I even have a desk background of him with a Christmas wreath in a stetegic place.  Can't remeber where I got it but it was funny.   Great writing.

And then when I heard Kaidan's voice I was very happy and hopeful.  Again some humor, not quite as much but definately a great character and my personal favorite.

Why do I get the feeling the 'majority' was guys?

As far as I was concerned Kaidan was the one and when you've found the one why look for someone else.

On another note...the Kaidan Alenko Appreciation Society has gone over the 100 member mark...yay! more support.

And I posted this on another thread but I will repeat it here...On IMBd  Sbarge's popularity rating is up 107% this week...seems as if the Horizon 'event' hasn't hurt Kaidan's popularity at all and Sbarge is benefiting from it.

No doubt the majority were guys, bit hard for it to be the other way around in a gaming world sadly :( Just compare the scenes tailored to the men in ME2 to those of the women and it's obvious yet again. Take the 80-20% marketing rule, apply it to Mass Effect. 80% RPG/Shooter - 20% romance (or even less). Take that 20% and apply the rule again, 80% romance effort for the men, 20% for the women...etc..etc. (I am not much of a marketing gal but had a long discussion about this with my boyfriend after venting about my pixel crush frustrations lol)

If anything after the bashing of the original LI after ME1 was released and the new romance options that were given, more people seem to appreciate the originals now or so it seems :)

Edit : Now going through ME1 again in between ME2 sessions and I keep talking to Kaidan where ever I am just to hear him talk. I am officially hopeless ;)

With the way they new ME2 LI's were written it's not surprising that people are wanting the originals back...I hope we get the same writer that did the Kaidan romance in ME to write it in ME3.

As for re-playing ME...I intend to do that as well when I get through with ME2...right now I'm still trying to get my canon exactly how I want it...killing off those I don't like.

I'd like to add my voice to the threat as well.

I enjoyed playing ME1 immensely and Kaidan was a main reason I have so many characters/saves now. He and Garrus were the ones I dragged through my very first play through.
Getting Garrus to join the new cause gave me hope that Kaidan might as well. I was hugely disappointed when I found out it wasn't the case. And I must admit it has diminished the replay value for me. Guess it's needless to say that none of the new romance options look intriguing to me.
I really hope they bring back Kaidan (&Ash &Liara) in ME3 to continue the romance.

For those who think 2 years is a long time ...
I lost someone when I was 35 - it took more than a year to get over the initial shock. After 2 years I was happy to have moved on with my basic life and if any friend of mine had suggested I should get into a new relationship I would have stopped calling them friend immediately.
That was seven years ago and I have never associated "moving on" with moving on to the next partner. I have a good life now that I enjoy, even if I am still single.
I am not living in the past, it is just knowing what you have, when you still had it, that makes it hard to find someone new.

Anyway, that made the Doctor part in Kaidan's "e-mail" somewhat hard to digest.

Do not worry Celyanae, they will bring Kaidan back in ME3. At least that was confirmed by Bioware, the romance will continue throughout the trilogy, even though his part in ME2 was so small.

At least with the mail and the photo sitting on Shep's desk, Kaidan was there in thought. Though that was hardly enough for me.

I can understand the mail being hard to digest after what you've experienced. I doubt Kaidan moved on, he tried to but judging from the encounter on Horizon, he failed at doing so. He was hurt, angry, felt guilty and lashed out, that says enough imo. I think they included the doctor comment just to show he still loves Shepard though, because it shows he tried and failed to move on. It could just be used to prove a point that otherwise would not have come across because it's just that one, single mail.

But again it's all up to our own interpretation and hopefully it will become more clear in ME3.

Celyanae I agree with Jhosephine, I think the doc was his attempt to try moving on and failing. In a round about way I think they were trying to show that he was still hung up on Shep. It was kind of a shock that was in there though considering that he seemed so hard to 'woo' in ME...kinda came across as the kind of guy that didn't date a lot in the first place...and he had friends...I got the impression from Chakwas he was a loner. It might also be possible that whoever was responsible with designing the email wasn't as familiar with his character as whoever wrote him for ME...someone said they even had a different head writer this time around.

On an off note: Glad to see I'm not the only one in the over forty crowd that loves Kaidan.

I'll post, because I have yet to have my manly romance with Kaiden. Romances in ME2 seem to be censored compared to the beautiful cinematography of the first games scene. Not even a shirtless Shepard, come on!

What do you mean mail and photo sitting on Shepards desk? or is this only for the female Shepards that romance him?

Femsheps get a picture of Kaidan on their desk and an email from him after the events on Horizon. Men get Ashley's picture I believe. Hmm, dunno if those who romanced Liara get her picture? But anyway, even if you haven't played ME1 it's still Kaidan for girls, Ash for guys. And should you decide to romance someone else, the picture will end up flat on the desk, face down.

A sidenote from me as well : Can't join the over fourty crowd, but over thirty will do for me ;)

Yes, If you are a femshep and you romanced him and imported or you start a new game as a femshep and get the default storyline you will have a picture of him on your desk in your quarters. Stay loyal and the picture stays upright...go for one of the ME2 LI's and the picture is turned down.

You get an email after his cameo on Horizon apologizing for his behavior and if you stay loyal to him all the way through you get a cutscene with Shep staring longingly into the picture before she goes off on the final leg of the suicide mission.

ETA: you beat me to it Jhosephine.

What I really miss in the game is a chance to talk with other people about Kaiden. You can talk a bit with Kelly and say something about Kaiden beeing a good man. But it had been nice if someone like Garrus(who most likely knew what was going on between Kaiden and Shepard, the crew of ME1 can't have been that blind) could have asked after Horizon how Shepard was feeling. Just a chance for my Shepard to express that she still loves him.

Agreed, which was exactly one of my annoyances with the Dragon Age ending as well. For some reason, beside the last dialogue you'll have with Thane, asking Shepard how's SHE is doing is a big no no. No human being can go on the way she does, taking such emotional hits without any reaction what so ever. Said it before in another thread, I know she's the hero, the tough gal, the butch spectre, but please give her a 'flaw' as well.

At least with Kaidan in ME1 you could talk about events, such as losing Jenkins.

Yeah, the only time in ME2 where I felt like my Shepard was genuinely expressing her feelings about the whole messed up situation was the renegade option when Joker asks you how the meeting with Kaidan on Horizon went.  It was one of the few "real" reactions Shepard had in the game to everything happening around her.

I'm still pretty disgusted that there was no option to debrief with the Systems Alliance military for Shepard, I don't think it's cool for my character to be a deserter once she has the ability to go back to her superior officers.  I totally agree with Kaidan (and Ashley) about how wrong it is to be working with Cerberus, without at least trying to work with the Alliance first.  But hopefully this stuff gets worked out properly in the third game.

And I'm an over thirty Kaidan fan, woot!  :wizard:

I like the sad face Shep pulls when she's talking to Kelly about missing Kaidan, there's a bit of real emotion, I'm sure that was how my face looked afterwards, my bf even asked me what was wrong at the time I looked so sad!

As for the Alliance, I'm sure Shep will get the option to contact them in ME3 I get the feeling you'll either be Alliance or Cerb depending on what you picked at the end.  Although even my Renegade MaleShep wouldn't side with the Cerb, he's a bada** who sometimes makes hard choices but he still knows where his loyalties lie!  And what kind of dumba** would keep the evil Reaper base considering every single Reaper artifac has indoctrinated everyone who's ever tried to study it?!

I did the same, but my Shepard couldn't romance him. So sad. There is obviously some tension between male Shepard and Kaiden. Been present since the first game even. Oh well. I can dream can't I? ha ha
