Yes you can. Only Lillith got toasted on my playthrough. I even managed to save all my squad members. (But my poor Shep would ensure just about anyone would survive.)

Ooh.  I didn't think about that.  They could be sharing meaningful glances while stuck in the pods together!  That is not permissable!  At ALL.

I do think the reason they didn't is because they didn't want them to have the ability to die, but then again, they could have gone the Chakwas route with them, and not LET them die.  But then Chakwas would have had to have the ability to die because having two people like that is just a little too strange.  We're gonna skip you, because you're hot... and you.... because....... WE'RE MIND-CONTROLLED WE DON'T NEED REASONS! <_<

I think when you first get the quest to be able to get the IFF, Miranda and Jacob get into an argument about whether you should keep building up the team or keep going. So for me that tipped me off that I needed to finish building my team if that's the route I wanted to take.

Unless I'm just confused and that happened at some other point...in which case I'm full of crap. Apparently it is lacking a certain something that makes me play parts over and over and over again...

It's somewhere around there...and yeah I know what that certain something or someone was. I feel the same way...some of the parts of the game are just a blur. Lack of Kaidan = lack of concentration (at least for me).

My guess, Grunt. After all, he was going through puberty and was likely frustrated and was not likely able to follow up on those mating requests because of the mission and all.

But despire the risks, I wanted to keep Urz too.  He made me a lot of money too.
