I'm afraid that ME2 kind of sealed DA:O's fate for me. It was a good game, but I was really let down by it. For all the years of development and hype, I didn't feel it actually delivered all that much. I hate how the world is so completely horrendous that everything about it is depressing. Oh, look, I defeated an archdemon. Hooray! Now let's go figure out why the darkspawn are still spilling out all over the place!
Not to mention that you really get the shaft in the romance, no matter what option you choose. My canon character chose to sacrifice herself, but my other human noble chose the "happy" ending. I'm sorry, but that's still not my interpretation of happy. Couple this with the fact that it looks like Alistair is not someone you can take along with you in DA:A, even if you played a character who had the "happy" ending, and, well, it just stinks. I have a yucky feeling in the pit of my stomach that BioWare is going to play a dirty trick on those of us who think we had a "happy" ending with Alistair. Boo, hiss is what I have to say about that. I'm thinking I may go the Warden from Orlais route with DA:A.
At any rate, maybe I'm so fond of ME because it's a game I didn't expect to like. I don't normally like shooters, but I found the combat so fun in ME (and even better in ME2) and the story was just so full of awesomeness. I know some people were let down by ME2, but not me. Sure, I wish I could have had Kaidan, but I thought the story was replete with supreme greatness. I'm so looking forward to ME3--but I'd better get my Kaidan!!!
Why is it that BioWare is allergic to happy endings for the PC? BGII let you marry Anomen, but it's all been kinda downhill from there. My PCs work hard to save the world/universe and I want them to have some fun when it's all over! The real world is plenty full of unhappy endings, so I don't need them in my gaming universe too.
