Should I expect to be potion-chugging for most fights?

So I played the game for a bit on normal and have been enjoying it so far, the gray warden initiation and battle was cool but afterward it seems to be getting increasingly demanding on potions to keep my party alive.

I have my tactic slots down pretty good so that my party is focus-firing and using their abilities when available. I have my tank go in with intimidation and the shield defense abilities active then my 2h warrior, rogue, and mage follow suit and fire on his initial target. My tank seems to drop way too fast, and my party's dps output on their focused target is definitely lower than the enemy party dps output on my tank. It seems to take at least 5 potions per fight to keep my party alive, otherwise if I try to go in potion-less most of my party usually dies and I may scrape by the battle by controlling my mage and kiting the last 2 enemies or something.

I haven't come across a healer character in the game yet, however my party's DPS is bad enough as it is so unless the healer is somehow powerful enough to keep my party up for a good amount of time while I slowly chip away at the enemies I am worried I will still be left potion chugging most of the time.

I'm wondering, is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm doing quests in Lothering and Redcliffe and I haven't really found much of any gear upgrades and am still kind of rocking the stuff I started with with a random item here and there. Or is it intended that potions be a major part of the game if you want your entire party to survive most battles?
